They probably won't until after the Pitt and UConn games tomorrow.  Who goes where probably depends on the outcomes of those games.

If Can't goes BCS-ing, then the MAC now has 4 bowl spots to fill, right? And since we're #5, we'd be in, right?

Could be that's why they aren't saying who will be playing in it. If Can't goes to the Orange Bowl, it's Ohio. If Can't doesn't, it's BUGS and we're staying home.

We're No. 6 (arguably):

1. Kent State (11-1)
2. NIU (11-1)
3. Toledo (9-3)
4. Ball State (9-3)
5. BGSU (8-4)
6. Ohio (8-4)

I could see us "potentially" going over BGSU, but it's a long shot

Bottom Line: We need at least one of the Big East teams (UCONN and Pittsburgh) to lose tomorrow. Probably need both to lose now that Georgia Tech has their waiver.

Crap. Forgot about Toledo (somehow). So, even if my theory is correct (not announcing who it is b/c maybe Can't goes to the promised land), it would be between BallSU and BUGS.

Thinking of driving to Hartford for the Huskies and Bearcats tomorrow.  Would love to be present for the UConn loss that solidifies our spot in the Military.  The Military Bowl would be a great event for Rob Walter and our alumni Chapter in DC to deliver a very large contingent of Cats to the game.  OHIO is very strong there, and I would definitely make the trip for that game.

But if Kent or NIU gets into the BCS, that'll knock one of the AQ teams out of a BCS slot, making one less regular bowl slot available.  Speculation is that Okla would lose out on a BCS bid, so it'll push another Big 12 team out of a Big 12 slot, making two Big 12 schools available for open slots instead of one.  It's a wash.  It would only mean than BSU would fill one of the MAC slots instead of Kent/NIU.  Ohio, BG and CMU wouldn't necessarily fill the open slot that BSU vacates.

The MAC tweeted that they had an agreement to put a team in the Military Bowl, meaning there would be 4 contractual tie-ins for the MAC, plus a theoretical BCS slot. What happened in other conferences wouldn't matter in that case. But since NIU won, the BCS scenario is a lot tougher, and we'll just have to wait and see.

I believe we are #6 in the MAC pecking order.  I just don't think 6 MAC teams will bowl.  Lost our chances when we lost to BUGS and Ballsie.

I'm really starting to think the only way we bowl is if UConn and Pitt both lose. That would put us at 71 eligible and guarantee a bowl. If there's 72, I think we may be out.

It probably all depends on what happens with Pitt and UConn tomorrow.  The Big Least has two slots to fill with bowls its contracted for, so Pitt and/or UConn automatically gets a bowl with a win.  Whether or not NIU gets a BCS slot, we probably won't be filling one of the four slots (Godaddy, Pizza, Tater and Military) the MAC is contracted for.  Right now there are 13 teams available to fill 12 slots, so CMU is likely to be the odd man out.  If either Pitt or UConn wins, there will be 13 teams to fill 11 slots, so our chances diminish.  If they both win, that's 13 teams to fill 10 slots, and we're probably screwed.  There will be 13 teams available to fill open slots even if NIU gets a BCS slot.  There will be one less MAC team to fill open slots, but there will be one more AQ team, likely Big 12, so the number will stay the same.

I wondered this week whether the Sun Belt did some shenanigans to ensure they get the most possible teams to bowls.  The New Orleans Bowl is listed as having the No. 1 team from the Sun Belt, which should be the champ.  The championship will be decided tomorrow when Ark St plays MTSU, both of which are 9-2.  But La-Lafayette (7-4) was named to the New Orleans Bowl this week, which means either Ark St or MTSU will get Sun Belt's other contract bowl.  It also means the loser will be a 9-win team without a bowl, making them much more likely to get an open slot than the other two Sun Belt teams available: La-Monroe (8-4) & WKU (7-5).  If La-Lafayette finishes 7-5 they might've been overlooked for an 8-4 team (like Ohio).

You need to realize Ohio looks more attractive to the Military Bowl than BG because we're 200 miles closer to DC (3 hours), drew 20% more than they did (even more with the Columbus game) and have a win over a team people inside the Beltway have heard of. Has nothing to do with wins and losses or how they played down the stretch.

Has nothing to do with wins and losses, yet you argue for us because of a win?  We may have beat Penn State, but the fact is that this is not the team that beat PSU and we completely sputtered on National TV at home against Bowling Green.  Would not be surprised to see BG go to DC over us.

The played down the stretch has a lot do do with it.  For a small sample, take a look at this board.  Some are saying that we should not go to a bowl period.  What promise is there that our DC presence will show up after going 1-4 down the stretch?

The bowl people can try to sell the fact, hey, this team beat PSU to try to draw some local people into the stands. It's about trying to sell tickets.

And I'll put my money on getting a place that drew 18k to drive 6 hours than trying to get a place that drew 15k to drive 9.

Based on how we played down the stretch are we more deserving of a bowl than BG? No way. But nobody ever said the bowl selection process was fair and straightforward.

It doesn't help our case when our own fans on this board question if we should be in a bowl game or forfiet a bowl bid. These kids deserve better than that. Yes, we have injuries, yes we didn't play well the past five games. We still have a record and a history. To deny these guys a shot at making this season a success would be a crime. Feedback? Bring it!

We draw 18k, but we give away 50% of our tickets for less than $5

The bowl system doesn't care about wins and losses.  GT getting a waiver proved that.  The bowls and the conferences care about who can best represent on and off the field, and simply put OU is more attractive than BG.  The level of support everyone has put in over the last few years combined with some marquee wins and media attention makes us more attractive than BG.

The DC presence will show up.  The alumni have continued to have game watch parties up through the final game of the season despite how things were going.  Our chapter sold out out tickets to PSU and then bought all the Pittsburgh chapter tickets that they couldn't sell.  This is a strong group who loves its university win or lose, and a group that has been hoping for OU to make the Military Bowl for several years.

I would give it a 10% chance we would get picked over bowling green if it comes down to that. Maryland bcat is right, the bowls care about who can best represent on and off the field. bgsu beat us head to head, and have a better conference record and they are 4-1 in their last 5 compared to 1-4 for us. The bowls want a competitive matchup and right now unfortunately we dont offer that. and havent for 2 months. We have 1 quality win and they have none so we do have that going for us, but that was back in September. The difference in ticket sales between what we would sell and BGSU would sell is negligible. You're talking the difference of probably less than 600 tickets sold if that. The DC presence and chapter is awesome and they will turn out but we're kidding ourselves if you think that plays into the decision making of what team to select. We need UCONN to lose. I do think we have a decent shot of getting selected over WKU should it come to that. This year 8-4 MAC should trump a 7-5 sun belt record. I posted a month ago that an 8-4 record we would have to sweat it out the final week of the season and hope for losses and no one believed me. We only have a shot because Miami FL gave themsleves a postseason ban.

+1.  Well stated.

I certainly wish we were 10-2, had taken care of bizness against Miami, not laid an egg at home on Senior Night against BG, and were now talking about WHICH bowl we were going to, rather than IF we might get a shot.

Also, re: another poster's comment re: this discussion/debate on a fan board negatively affecting whether a bowl committee selects Ohio, c'mon.    First off, good respectful, honest debate about one's team and University is a good, healthy thing and to be expected on a board like this.

Second, the bowl committee will simply look at which team adds to the brand of their Bowl, will offer up a competitive, spirited effort, and may be able to either put some of their own fans in the seats or attract neutral fans from the area to check out the game.

I don't think the Miltary Bowl cares one bit whether BG is the better team down the stretch or who finished 4th vs 5th in the MAC.  They care about who can bring fans and get people into RFK.  They would take a horrible Maryland team if it meant 35,000 people showed up to watch them lose badly.  The only way BG gets it over OU is if the MAC pushes for it.  I don't believe the ticket sales would be negligible between the us and BG.  I think the bowl wants to be able to present the best matchup to potential ticket-buyers, especially with one of the teams being San Jose St.  In the end Ohio has the better name recognition.  Now if the MAC pushes BG I'm fine with that because they did beat us, but in the end it's an at-large bowl game.  Reps from the Military Bowl even stated in the Wash Post this today that they wish there were no affiliations for bowl games and it were more of a free agent system.
