I posted this at the bottom of the Marshall UC back to the MAC thread, but think it deserves its own thread.

Big East Splitting, maybe dissolving.

Interesting quote from article: "What is certain is that programs such as Temple, which is set to join the Big East in basketball next season, Cincinnati, Connecticut and South Florida, are in terrible limbo."  [Emphasis mine]

I'm not sure why this deserves its own thread. I think UC and UConn end up in the ACC. Temple may end up back in the MAC. Can't imagine Boise et al will go through with the new Big East. With the weakened A-10 (assuming teams leave for BE Hoops), maybe the MAC can make a stronger play for Temple hoops.

I can see Temps being picked up by the ACC as well, if only for the Philly TV market.  Don't see them being competitive much in football unless FSU, Clemson and MiamiF move on.  Given that they were 2-5 in the mediocre Big Least this year, they would be lower tier football.  As for b-ball, with the Tobacco Road teams to contend with, they would likely be low-to-mid tier.

Perhaps it belongs in the B-Ball section since this is a B-Ball play.  If these schools hook up with the A-10, it will resemble the old ECAC from the 70's.  Takes me back to my youth watching Merle Harmon, Dick Enberg(before NBC), and Hot Rod Hundley on the old TVS telecasts.

With the hire at UC of Tubberville and a "committment" to raise $60-70 million to renovate Nippert, it is obvious UC is not going down without a fight.  They have committed the resources and once the BIG10 is done picking, I have a feeling UC will be accepted by the ACC.  Both FB and BB would probably be competitive immediately.  I still believe that UC will be one of the 70-80 "big time" programs in one of the five major conferences post realignment.

why would anyone think temple would be welcome back in the mac anyway? Of course why would temple want back in a league they showed they were only second tier?

Temple to the ACC "because it brings the Philadelphia market" would require the Philadelphia market to care about Temple.  The school's athletics is really an after thought with the local media.  I also don;t see the blue bloods of the conference (UNC, Duke, VA, etc.) voting in favor of a Temple.

If ESPN or someone else adds $ to a TV contract due to Temple's location, a conference will want them.  Including the MAC.

Uconn has won a national championship and played in a BCS bowl and has no conference.  Wow.

I think the "played" part of "played in a BCS bowl" is kinda generous. Like saying that "[insert third party presidential candidate's name here] could have been elected President"

I am reposting some of my thoughts on from another thread and adding to them because I think it is very pertinent to this discussion.

With the new coming today that the Big East looks headed to the dustbin of conferences, and barring a last minute invite from the ACC what is Cincinnati going to do? I think if the Big East is dissolved the MAC should immediately make overtures to Cincinnati, Memphis Temple and Marshall. Cincy Temple and Memphis are basketball powers and they certainly have upgraded their football programs while Marshall has probably been longing to get back into the MAC for a while. I imagine UConn will be invited to the ACC, but if they are not, why not throw a lifeline to them. The MAC should be proactive, it may be out best chance to upgrade and our stability should be a draw. Our football has been on the upswing for years and these schools realize that is where the money is at this point in college athletics. Who knows, when the dust is settled it may look like the best option for all of these schools. What other options do they have at this point? It may sound crazy but crazier things have happened.

The BE still has a BCS bid next year so these teams have some time. Either UC will go to the ACC or look to form a league with BE/CUSA schools. The MAC has nothing to offer them. If I were Ohio, I would at least be thinking about how I could fit into it a conference that will emerge with Marshall/Temple/UMass/Memphis/East Carolina/Toledo (and UC/UConn if they truly don't find homes).

Unless half of the Mac wants to split and pick up UC, UCONN, Temple, Marshall, and Memphis, were going to have to kick teams out or create a new conference.

A realistic possibility:

MAC/Big East/Conference USA

Memphis, UConn, UC, USF, Temple, Marshall, Ohio, Central Michigan, Toledo, NIU, UMASS, and UCF

Throw a hook for four more teams?:

BGSU, Akron, Miami, Boise State?

We could raise minimum 30,000 seats for football and 7,500 for basketball. Create a contract with ESPN and ABC or NBC.

Every school and league out there is drawing cards.  I think the MAC and OUr fellow brethern are standing pat.  Probably not a wise choice but it is where the MAC is and where it appears the league and it's members are content to be.  Don't look for anything new out of this group!

Um...a 30,000 seat requirement for football would exclude us, no?

I think a lot of us are getting caught up in details of Conference alignment and teams without really thinking what  the end result is to look like.  My guess is there will be 5 major Conferences with 14-16 teams each.  So, we are talking 70-80 schools.  After that, the other 50 or so will be left to do what they want (some kind of glorified D1-A or something).  Bottom line is PROBABLY no MAC teams ends up in the 70-80 schools the big guys want to include in their neighborhood.

As interesting it is to speculate about the MAC adding teams or a new conference forming from the best MAC/BE/C-USA teams I doubt it will happen.  I agree that it sounds like the MAC schools are fine where they are.  Any new conference configuration with MAC members would require those schools to make improvements in facilities for quality and size.  And from what I can tell the academic sides of all the institutions would revolt at any big increase in money being spent on athletics.  As noted no MAC school really has the geographic footprint or fervor within the community to commit the resources that would be needed.

I think some of you folks underestimate what Dr. McDavis can and will do if the right opportunity presents itself.  We are just now getting to the point where realignment could affect Ohio and other MAC schools.  This could be in the form of a "new MAC" or a brand new conference built on the ashes of the BE and the disaffected of the C-USA.  With the right mix this would be a revenue enhancement not a greater financial burden.  I think the big payday that NIU will soon see in the Orange Bowl will make the "new MAC" concept the more likely option as Ohio and other schools will not want to split until they get their hands on the trickle down money from NIU.  Also, with the big payout Gang-of-Five v. BCS bowl starting in 2014 having a conference that can compete for that one spot enhances the chances that the gravy train will continue.  We are entering what could be "interesting times" for the old MAC.

It looks like the die is cast -- BE breaking apart, but the only remaining question is how.  The Catholic schools hold all the cards now.  I can't see how the football conference stays in business after this defection.  Boise and SDSU are not going to stay around, unless I'm really missing something here.

I think the only way the MAC is impacted is if Connecticut makes some attempt to remain with the basketball schools and asks into the MAC as football only.

And given their history, the only thing that would make more sense is to give up this crazy idea that they should play FBS football.

Never say never.  And with schools coming up to 1A every year or so, you never know how conferences will shake out.  The MAC's years as a mostly-bus league may be numbered.  I don't think anybody really cared to have UCF in the fold way back when, but it having more-distant teams in the MAC might be more palatable if there were some closer ones, too.  I don't expect larger schools, but ones like Richmond, Charlotte or some of the MVC schools would be ok.
