WOW. 20 percent of your posts are from today. If not for Frank Solich we may still be 2-9, 1-10 or some other mediocre record. Frank was not "mediocrity", although your posts are.
There is no reason to be harsh with him. I'm guessing that he's a younger fan, possibly one that grew up supporting some other team. Defining "mediocrity" is all about the context. If you grew up supporting a team that wins 70% of it's games, and wins a championship every other year, then winning 55% of games may seem pretty mediocre. If you grew up following a team that often won 20% of it's games, then winning 55% is a significant improvement.
The fact is that in 2005, the fans of most other MAC teams considered Bobcat footall to be a joke, and they thought it was an absurd joke that Ohio fans thought they had any hope of ever winning the East. The fact that, for example, this year, BG fans were saying that "to win the MAC East, you have to beat Ohio" shows that the landscape is now very different. Other MAC coaches have said that their goal was to make their programs as competitive every year as Ohio.
Could Solich have done even better than he did? Yes. Is Solich the greatest coach that ever lived? No. But, he was a very solid coach, who very successfully built Ohio into a position where it is competitive every year. Do we hope that Albin can take the program even further, and win some MAC Championships? Absolutely. Do we hope that the next 10 Ohio coaches also win championships, so that we have a different context, one where we can declare Solich "mediocre"? Absolutely. Is it also possible that Ohio football descends back into the abyss, and returns to what it was in the 80's and 90's, making Solich the greatest coach in the last 50 years? That's also possible, but no one wants that.
The bottom line is that, when some new fan appears and declares Solich to be "mediocre", consider the context, and remember that he probably grew up following some other team, and welcome him as a new addition to the Bobcat family. Hopefully Ohio will continue to attract more new fans in the future, and that expansion to 60,000 seats will be needed before long. ;)
