Regarding safety, Carpenter should not be on the field as much as he was last year. I love his game, but (and its unfortunate) the guy is just too little. He can do ****everything**** right and still get beat by height alone.

The guy we really need on the field is Hughes...he's fast, hits well and has a nose for the ball. I'm also looking forward to seeing Toran Davis play. He looked fast and aggressive in his high school highlights.

The Sentinel hasn't had any MAC teams for a while, and they're into the 60s.  Here's the group since CMU at 83:

82. SMU
81. Iowa
80. Washington State
79. Duke
78. Purdue
77. Maryland
76. Louisiana-Monroe
75. Indiana
74. Missouri
73. Tennessee
72. Air Force
71. Nevada
70. San Jose State
69. ECU

Apparently Eric Herman getting drafted by the Giants was not a "key loss" for Ohio. Good grief, do your homework. Or do it better.

The Sentinel tends to draw conclusions by making the assumption that every non returning starter was a 5th senior who played every snap of his college career and every replacement is a true freshman straight out of high school.

There will be some good players on the O line to replace, but to say that "the offensive line will need to be rebuilt in 2013" is a bit of an exaggeration.

LT - Very solid - Return both Prior and McQueen, Prior is the returning starter, McQueen is also very good
LG - Very solid - Return both Lechner and Mark Smith, Lechner was a sometimes starter, and Smith played well in 2010/2011 before redshirting last year
C - Unknown - Return Powell - but, he did not play in 2011, played minimal number of snaps in 2012. Also, who is his backup?
RG - Solid - Return Sam Johnson and Mike Lucas. Johnson played well in 2011, and last year before getting hurt, and has a fair amount of snaps. Lucas was in in for a few snaps last year, and played well.
RT - Very Solid - Return McGrath and Bryce Dietz. Like LT, the starter and backup are both back, and both good.

Besides these guys, you also have redshirt Sophomores Seth Everhart, Mike Curtis, and Jacob Welter, plus Redshirt Freshmen Troy Watson and Nic Gibbons trying to find a spot on the field, plus three true Freshmen, who I hope will all redshirt.

Almost all the line positions have experienced players returning. The only mystery is Center. If Powell plays well, and they find a good backup for him, the line this year could be every bit as good as the one last year. The depth at OL gets better every year. Ohio now "reloads, not rebuilds".

For what it's worth, Ohio may not have the eyepatch, but they are not forgotten. Here is the consensus pics for the MAC this year. Thus far Bowling Green has a slight lead in pics for the East, with Ohio right behind. Interestingly Buffalo is the consensus pick for 3rd.

thanks LC, your insight, as always, is much appreciated. I would like to pick your brain for one more group- the DBs. Specifically the young guys that saw a lot of playing time last year- Well, Fisher and Bass. I would expect to see some improvement simply for being a year older but overall do these guys have the skill set to be great or should we expect to see them be average at best? How optimistic are you about our defensive backs after Carrie and Shaw are gone?

If you looked at my link to the Consensus picks, 3 of 5 picks have Buffalo ahead of Kent, and they are favored for 3rd in the East.

I guess I just don't get why the consensus is for Kent State to fall from being a double OT loss away from a BCS bowl bid to MAC East also-ran. Yeah, losing Hazell hurts, but teams are still going to have to figure out how to stop Archer and Durham.

And Buffalo's strength is all on paper. Quinn has yet to show that he can pull it together.

I don't quite understand it either.  They have a lot of talent returning: Archer, Durham, Nix and others.  I guess Meyerburg is hanging a lot on the losses on the O line and the not-too-impressive (in his view) secondary.  I wouldn't overlook them, though.

In the 20 seasons before Solich arrived in Athens the Bobcats won 61 games, 3.05 wins/yr. Frank's win totals his first four years were 4-9-6-4.

In the 20 season before Hazell arrived in Kent the Flashes won 57 games, 2.85 wins/yr. Hazell's win totals were 5-11-??.

When a program averages ~3 wins/season for 20 years and suddenly has a break out season a step backwards is to be expected, add in a coaching change on top of that and there's not a lot of reason to believe Kent State will be a top team team this year. They will likely be better than their average, but last year was a special run.

It takes time to develop a winning culture.

The O-line like most years will depend on healthy players.  We're OK depth wise but after the second team it's inexperience time for sure.....bu that could be said for most teams.

Powell may get some competition from Smith and Everhart but if Lechner goes down at LG then Smith will slide over to a spot he has played before.

DB also needs to play the healthy game but I think the future looks good even losing Carrie and Shaw this yeat....all of the CB back-ups are capable and the safeties are deep.

Is Toledo really the team to beat in the West? That's not an insane pick, but honestly, if I had to pick someone from the West to bump NIU, I'd go with BallSU.

What surprised me is that they put nine teams between NIU and Toledo (Minn, Utah, La-Laf, Rice, Az, Houston, SDSt., Az St & WVU).  I think  NIU and Toledo are more evenly matched than that.

I can't remember about Ball State, Toledo, and NIU, but that seems right.

Paul Myerberg tweeted today that he's got us pegged to win the East. Not sure where that puts us in relation to the yet-to-be-ranked West teams

Sorry Pastakala, but I think you marked the latest update in error. BGSU is #52 in the USAtoday countdown, not ball state

Thanks for catching that.  I should never try to do this stuff so early in the morning.

BTW, USAT put AZ at 51, which means there will be four MAC teams & Terd in the top 50.  I'm guessing that one -- probably NIU -- will be top 25.

USAT just counted off Ole Miss at #47, meaning that there will be 4 MAC teams (OHIO, Ball State, Toledo, Northern Illinois) in the top46.

The clue for #46 is

- Who is No. 46? This team's coach has suffered only one losing season (a 5-6 finish) during 12 years at three different NCAA stops.

I'm 98% sure that this mean's there will only be 3 MAC teams in the top45.

Edit: Increased the confidence of my estimate

That clue has to be read closely.

We, and NIU, are going to come in ahead of Marshall (based on the clue they will be #40) in Paul Myerberg's USA today countdown

speaking of countdowns the Hustlebelt blog is doing a countdown of the top 68 players in the MAC, so far they've counted downn (or up?) from 68-17 and only 2 have been Bobcats- Lechner at #63 and Carrie at #36. The only teams with fewer players so far are UMass with 2 and Akron with 1. Toledo leads with 8 players so far. I guess they're saving all of the Ohio players for the end.
