During half I have switched over to ND vs Michigan.  Notre Dame's nose tackle is wearing #1 and Michigan's quarterback is wearing #98.  I don't know what drives me more crazy, duplicate numbers or ridiculous non traditional numbers for a position.  I think I am still leaning towards duplicate numbers.

Devin Gardner, Michigan's QB is wearing #98 to honor Tom Harmon, UM's first Heisman winner. He will wear that number for the rest of the year. Several other players will be wearing certain numbers to honor former players like Desmond Howard (#21) and Gerald Ford (#84)

As for Nix, I think it's his choice. Definitely not the first DL to choose single digits, but still unique...

Really?  85 scholarships and 14 walk-ons gives you 99 players.  I think only 60 can dress for a game.  Duplicate numbers should not be an issue.

You had better check your facts, in August you bring 105 players, and you only have 99 numbers, and I believe OHIO only has 98 numbers. Then when school begins your roster expands even more. As for dressing, you have travel limits for league games only and can dress as many as you want at home

Unorthodox numbers are one of my favorite things in football. I covered a high school game with opposing quarterbacks with numbers 20 and 31 this week. sublime. I  love linebackers with single digits. Michigan's tradition of a No. 1 receiver is great. Oh, and kickers in the 90s are the best.

The NFL requires that each position have a number within a certain range.  OLs have to be in the 50-80 range; RBs and QBs under 50; receivers in the 80s or under 50.  Helps to keep track of eligible receivers.  The NCAA doesn't care, tho.

As for duplicate numbers, we benefited from the rule last year when one of our opponents had two players with the same number on a kickoff return.  They were penalized for illegal substitution (I think) and it nullified a pretty good return.

Actually the NCAA also has number restrictions via position, however they are not as restrictive as the NFL due to the roster sizes.

Is there a reason why Ohio never issues #1? I heard a rumor years ago that Coach Grobe didn't like handing it out because it "promotes individuality at the expense of team", but I don't think I buy into that. And besides, even if that were the reason, we are now two coaching administrations removed from that period.

Thanks. My point was that #0 is not a valid number for players, so it would be the perfect number to give to a mascot. (As though a mascot needs a number at all!) So there has to be another reason why #1 is not issued to players.

I would say that this is probably correct. It's an Ohio tradition, not a Solich one. They did use #1 at Nebraska, so obviously Solich picked up on the Ohio tradition, and adopted it.

Does Ohio dress 105 for all home games?  If so, walk-ons and redshirts can wear the 7 duplicate numbers, again duplicate numbers should not be an issue.  If Ohio loses a recruit over a jersey number, I really don't think I want that individual to be part of Ohio football.

What if two scholarship kids "WANT" to wear number 7?  Do you tell a young man you recurited that they cannot have the number they wanted?  And I believe we have close to 115 players on the roster, and they seem to dress everyone eligible, even those who do not dress wear jersey's on the sideline.  Either way you are dealing with more than 7 duplicates, and with the history that Coach Solich has had with his walk-on program, giving walk-ons duplicate numbers is not as easy as it sounds, because a lot of walk-ons earn playing time in this program.

I thought you check the facts and said 105 now it is 115?  Strange.  Yes I do tell a recruit 7 is taken and he can wait for it.  The fact he is part of Ohio football is privilege enough.  If you want number 7 earn it through hard work.  The purpose of numbers is to distinguish players from one another.  Having a number 7 on both offense and defense can be confusing for an observer not close to the team.
