OHIO UNIVERSITY SELECTS FRONT ROW MARKETING SERVICES TO SELL FIRST-EVER NAMING RIGHTS FOR PEDEN STADIUM FIELD AND THE CONVOCATION CENTER

24,000 CAPACITY FOOTBALL STADIUM AND 13,000+ CAPACITY COVOCATION CENTER ARE TWO OF COLLEGE ATHLETICS HISTORIC AND HALLMARK VENUES

ATHENS, OHIO – The Ohio University Athletics Department has announced a new partnership with Front Row Marketing Services, one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing sports and entertainment marketing firms, to secure naming rights for Peden Stadium Field and the Convocation Center. Front Row is a subsidiary of the Philadelphia-based Comcast-Spectacor that specializes in selling and evaluating commercial sponsorships as well as securing naming rights related inventory.

“Peden Stadium and the Convocation Center are two of the most time-honored properties in the MAC and greater collegiate athletics space” said Chris Lencheski, President for Front Row Marketing Services. “The Bobcat’s lair hosts some of the most exciting game experiences in Mid American Conference football and the Convocation Center serves as a multi-purpose event venue for the region and continues to be one of the NCAA’s most exciting atmospheres in college basketball, it is a privilege to be collaborating with Ohio University.”

“This is truly an exciting partnership for Front Row,” said Eric Smallwood, Senior Vice President for Front Row Marketing Services.  “Ohio University has a proud history and tradition in the MAC and Division I Athletics, offering the potential naming rights partner millions of impressions each month.  We look forward to contributing to that success.”

The 24,000 capacity stadium and 13,080 capacity arena are state-of-the-art facilities housing Ohio University’s prestigious Division 1 Football and Basketball programs. The venues are located in Athens, Ohio just outside of Columbus, Ohio’s state capital and largest market. Hosting its 85th season of Bobcats football and 45th season of basketball, Peden Stadium and the Convocation Center offer a previously unavailable sporting legacy for naming rights partners to engage NCAA fans, students, alumnus, and greater Columbus-area/Ohio consumers. Tune-in to ESPN2 tonight (11/19/2013) at 8:00PM EST to see the Bobcats take on Kent State live from Peden Stadium Field.

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, the $$$ is great. On the other hand, part of me will die when I see some company's name on our stadiums and it won't just be Peden or the Convocation Center anymore.

Utter bs and just another example of the current ad's lack of historical perspective.  I hope all posters on here with a spine will send letters of objection  to McDavis on this.  My email is on the way.

Ohio Stadium. Let's get an Indiegogo or Kickstarter going and make it happen.

Great news.

Another step toward the crucial renovations needed to take this program to the next level.

In which case, I am going to have to get on my email to write the message of support for exploring an untapped revenue stream.

Before we get to amped up either way, let's keep in mind that this is a marketing company that has been brought on board to sell this opportunity after a generation in which any person interested in getting their name on a building could have picked up a phone and gotten a pretty quick answer on the cost.

If you really feel this way, then do something about it.

Get a big pile of money together, with whatever group you'd like, and buy the naming rights yourself.

Then name it nothing.

Lather, rinse, repeat, ad nauseum, to keep these perpetually unnamed.

Personally, I don't like it either, but I do recognize that cash is king.

So, if you'd like, I'll kick in $100 towards it, in perpetuity...  But not until we win the rights.

What would be the starting price/lowest offer we'd take? Up here, the local high schools are starting to take this approach. In fact today Brunswick announced naming rights to a local car dealer. $750,000 to cover 15 years.

You can always resist it by continuing to call it Peden Stadium (instead of Acme Field).

A few things to keep in perspective:

- Often in these cases you will name the field and not the stadium. Cardinal Health Field at Peden Stadium.  Not the same amount of money involved though.
- Many times these deals will explore other ways to get the sponsor/company involved with the university.  Business School, Student Services, Etc.
- These Tuesday night games, they really up the value of having naming rights to a stadium.  TV Mentions TV Mentions TV Mentions.
- OU has too many buildings named after people that didn't pay a dime to have it named after them....I know this shouldn't be the case for every building.....
- This is a good start to future corporate investment, not only in Athletics, but OU in general and Athens.  Also look for an increase in hospitality and suite style seating options.
- The money is needed.  When you see a project like the locker room renovation drag out for this long, you have to recognize our need for new funds.  Family Packs don't pay the bills....

Great idea to generate cash.  It will always be called the Convo so don't worry.  No chance it can be any worse than Value City Arena.

Edit: Maybe Roger Ailes will deliver some Fox News cash - Fox Field, The Fox Convocation Center.  Seems odd to have Fox name with a Bobcat mascot though.

Or you can take the Akron approach and sell both! Summa Field at Infocision Stadium.

I went to a Pens game a couple weeks ago, and I don't think I've ever seen an arena with as much branding as that. It's the Consol Energy Center. I went in the American Eagle Outfitters Gate and sat in the FedEx Level. I walked past the Captain Morgan Club and the First Niagara Club.

Consol is heavily branded but they do it in a way where you can still differentiate it.  Which brings up the most important point of these naming rights.  People cry wolf when it happens, but it often works out.  Examples: The Q in Cleveland.  This name has caught on pretty well.  Progressive Field as well.  It hasn't quite caught on, but because it is based in Cleveland and some of the other branding.....it works.  Value City Arena sounds like a flop to me.

I could be wrong, but I wouldn't look to see this money coming from a donor/alum.  If it was, we wouldn't need the firm.  Unless the deal is close to being done and they are brought in to make sure it is completed correctly.  My guess would be that this will be tied to a company (Nationwide, Chase).

Peden Stadium and the Convocation Center are "state of the art" facilities?

So how many BA folks do we have here? We pony up some dough and make a bid for it. Each month we rotate the name of a BA poster.

"Welcome to Monroe Slavin stadium, the site of tonight's MAC football matchup. In the distance you can see the basketball arena -- Bobcat Dragon Center. What? There is no more Bobcat Dragon?"

Read the release closely. Naming rights for the field, not the stadium.

AEP, Grange Insurance, Nationwide (football), Ohio Health, Safe Auto, Cardinal Health, Columbia Gas are a few companies that come to mind. Another candidate with southeastern Ohio ties is Bob Evans. Over the past 3 years they have gotten more aggressive with their sports marketing presence. Perhaps a family will step forward. Galbraith's are the first ones I think about. Another potential group of prospects would be a Chesapeake Energy type sponsor. With the recent natural gas boom in eastern-southeastern Ohio this might be a source.

Nothing can get in the way of revenue, including tradition. Renaming the facilities won't be the end of the world as we know it.

Anyone remember the controversy changing from The Paw logo? It wasn't the death of OU merchandise sales as some predicted.
