There are 5 teams in the MAC with a better record than Ohio. Do you think you can get a bowl invitation? Doesn't the MAC only have 3 bowl guarantees? I haven't heard much talk about conferences not being able to fill their bowl games either. I think bowl talk at this point is out the window.

Please read the SI article I posted in another thread on this forum.

I read it.  I should have read the other threads before I posted.  I understand that Bobcat fans are upset with their record and the "2nd half of the season implosion", but I totally disagree with the "I don't want a bowl game" people.  If you are eligible and invited, then go enjoy the extra game, practices, and swag for the players.  Beat UMASS and win a bowl game and you get to 8 wins.  Not a bad season.

Thanks, and good luck to Marshall!

Just read there are 75-76 bowl eligible teams now.  Things don't look good for OHIO...

Seems to depend primarily on NIU taking care of business to give the MAC their 5 tie ins plus the BCS game.  GO HUSKIES!

This topic was actually the exact opposite....Saying that we should go to a bowl game no matter what excuse some people may give....

I'm not going to get on a soapbox again, but I hate this whole "they're student-athletes...don't criticize them or be mean" thing.

For goodness sakes, this isn't little league. You're talking about adults that are representing a major university on and off the field. We can be as critical of them as we wish and shouldn't feel bad in the least.

High school is different. But once you step foot on a college campus, you are fully accountable for your actions. As a parent, community member and faculty member...I know that I'm not alone in this sentiment.

I've taught at Ohio University for nearly 30 years. I have always treated students as nothing but adults. As fans, alumni, etc. I feel we should do the same. The world isn't all sunshine and lollipops

Questions:

How many bowl slots are there?

Of the teams now bowl eligible, how many are 6-6?

Of the 6-6 teams, how many of those are assured slots because of conference-bowl tie-ins?

I believe there are now 77 bowl eligible teams.  Rutgers and a few others COULD become bowl eligible next weekend.  IF NIU can win and a couple of those "near eligible" teams don't we could slide thru but it is gonna be nail bitin time.  A few of those "other teams" are 6-6 some from BCS conferences and some not.  Most of the most recent projections have us in but it will go down to the wire!

Oh, and blitz tell ALL student athletes NOT to visit this blog.  It is just a bunch of old farts (like me) who have an opinion they want to share with like mind people.  It is NOT for any athletes viewing.

Sorry, but asking posters here (so long as they remain reasonably civil) to refrain from free expression because of the sensibilities of the players is a non-starter.

They can avert their eyes, or, perhaps motivated, play better.

But telling people here to not post their thoughts is hogwash.

This is what I was thinking tonight. The MAC at this point in time is only guaranteed 4 bowl games (the 3 tie-ins and the Poinsettia). Ohio I believe after this weekend is #5 on the pecking order over Toledo because of Solich and T2 there is more of a story line to offer. At best #5 and the worst case scenario leaves the MAC at 4 bowl participants (BG, Buffalo, NIU, BSU). NIU is 90% likely to beat Bowling Green. They win and it opens up a 5th spot in the MAC. UCF is 90% likely to beat SMU and that opens up the game in St. Pete for the MAC. That would be a 6th spot for the MAC so there is an 81% chance of 6 spots for the MAC and that would lock both Ohio and Toledo into a bowl. Rutgers is playing poorly as of late and has a 50% chance of winning its final game against UConn. They lose and it opens the Compass Bowl for the MAC for a 7th opportunity. The chances of the MAC picking up a 7th bowl are 40%. Ohio and Toledo are likely. Central Michigan has hope.

Like I said earlier its not up to you or anyone else on this board if they go to a bowl game. So no it's idiotic to assume the question if they should or should not. The NCAA determines the post season last time I checked. Not some has been or never was before sitting behind a computer screen. Or maybe thats not entirely true either.

I'm not sure what you mean by the NCAA determing the post season, but it's bowl tie-ins and bowl committees talking to each other and AD's to figure out who goes where. The NCAA sets the rules in who is eligible and who has preferences over other teams- like transitional teams, but they don't have the final say as far as I can tell in deciding individual bowl participants. At least that's my take in things, and I may be wrong.

I'm still going out on a limb and say we are going to play in the Beef OBrady bowl.

Well Rowdy, three of the projections I've read today (CBS and 2 ESPN projectors) have Ohio in that bowl. Florida is nice this time of year.
