Can't say I'm surprised with the exception of the money Amato makes at Akron.

The G5 can survive without the P5.

The P5 cannot survive without the G5.

They break away from us at their own peril. What will happen when OSU has to replace the 3 non P5 patsy OOC home games each Sept with actual home/away agreements with other P5 schools?

Suddenly there's a lot more P5 teams with 1 or 2 losses in Sept and their fans will want someone's head on a stick.

Oh, they'll still play those games.  They just won't share any of their TV and bowl money and etc.

TV and bowl money might go down, but individual payouts for "body bag" games will go WAY up. If we have no access to bowls and their fancy playoff system, what other incentive do we have to play those games if we're not considered in their league?

The ohio states, penn states and floridas with unlimited spare change can handle it, but is Indiana going to start paying upwards of 2M for visitors to come to their stadium when football revenue isn't in the same league? Does Indiana even want to compete on the same level as osu mich wisconsin? In a 120-team division, Indiana can be in the bottom of the big 10, but still be perceived as midpack for Div1.  If the P5 separates, the Indianas of the world quickly become "have-nots".

Could you expand on the logic here. I'm not sure I'm following. Currently, the OUs of the world aren't agreeing to play "body bag" games because they provide access to bowls or a fancy playoff system, they play them for money. I'm not sure why the elimination of MAC level schools from playoff participation suddenly sends the market for those non-conference games skyrocketing. Is the idea that we're just going to play hardball and request twice the money as in the past? Those games will still present significant paydays for our athletic department.

Yea....I'm struggling with this as well. Seems to me our program (and the MAC) will become less significant. I have not had the time to see where the dollars end up but it seems certain this will eliminate TV games with these ego conferences. These games provided the opportunity for "smaller" conferences to make a statement.

In my uniformed mind (for now), I see the ego conferences creating their own little world of continued cash money and TV dominance while our conference sees the beginning of the end?

Guru's,

Yes? No?

Help a brotha out.

No, next year the MAC will get more money from the "playoff system" than it ever got with the BCS system, even the year that NIU went -- something like $900,000 a year for just existing, would be a cool $1 million if we could figure out a way to ditch EMU.  And, if we are the best team in any of the G5 conferences we are guaranteed a trip to the new Big Time Bowl created just for that purpose, with a what in today's terms would be a BCS-level payout.  It's the FCS level schools that are really going to start feeling the squeeze.  That's why all of the movement is from FCS to FBS, but that movement is going to become a lot harder, with the 12-team conference practical limit for non-AQ FBS conferences.  That's because a non-AQ FBS conference will not get more than $12 million, even if they have more than 12 schools.  This is a limit that the AQ conferences have not put on themselves.

I still believe it is inevitable that something like this "other" tier will happen.  Have said it since the playoff talk started in earnest.  When it does I will be rooting my ass off for Ohio just like I do now.  If it doesn't happen I will be surprised but not disappointed.

That's possible.  But just as possible is an expansion of the playoff system that will give the "others" an opportunity to participate.  Right now, they're at four teams for the playoff. If the playoff had been this year, the first round would've been O$U-FSU and (holy cow!) Bama-Auburn (based on the final BCS standings).  Three "power" conference champions would've been left out: MSU, Stanford & Baylor.  Under any four-team system, at least one would be outside looking in, unless the Big Twelv gets assimilated by the others (think "Borg").  And they'll always be those who think their team deserves to be in the mix ahead of one of the teams in it.  So probably within five years they'll have to expand it to at least an eight-team playoff.  That'll at least open the possibility for the selection committee to choose a "non-power" team.

I think now that the playoff door has been opened a crack, an 8 team playoff is inevitable. They could make so much money from this through TV it makes no sense not to expand it as much as possible. I would love to see (and dont think its super far fetched) an 8 team playoff where the 5 power conference champions get an auto bid, there is an auto bid for the top non AQ school much like this new bowl game, and 2 wild card spots. Everyone wins in that scenario.
