Maybe we should go get Luke Fickell and give him his shot at building his coaching cred....  Frank has done a great service to OU but his plans are too predictable and its time for the football program to mature not stagnate. IMHO

Interesting thought. USA Today, in their game preview, suggested that this could be Frank's last game if he won according to rumors they had heard. That's news to me. We didn't win, but as much as most in this board would be shocked, I really wouldn't be surprised too much if he retired. He could also coach another 10 years and I wouldn't be surprised. Who knows except those really close to him?

Luke Fickell? The same Luke Fickell who had the deer in the headlights look the entire season he was interim head coach at o$u? The same Luke Fickell who's going to get bounced five minutes after their bowl game? Please.

If I were Urban I'd give him one hell of a recommendation.

No thanks.

Fickell does not fit the mold of the coaches this administration hires.

When Solich does retire (this year, next year, or 2025) I'd rather we not get an assistant from B1G/ACC/SEC/B12/P12.  The problem with most MAC schools is that they're changing coaches every three or four years, which leads to instability in their programs.  Their hires view the school as a waystop on the road to something bigger, which may be a reason that recruiting 3- and 4-star players is so difficult for MAC schools (one of many, of course).  NIU has managed to beat the system, and CMU did it for a while.  But by and large recruits can't be sure that a successful MAC coach will be around more than a year or two.  From day one Solich has been committed to Ohio for the long haul, and that's made a big difference.  He's had five players taken in the NFL draft; I don't think any other MAC school can claim that during the past decade.  Granted, his situation was unique when we hired him.  But we need to try to replicate that next time.  Ohio should be a destination, not a stopover.

That would indeed be the best scenario but as has been posed by others before, which would you rather have, a coach who clearly has "it", can take a program where it has rarely gone ala John Groce or Dave Clawson/Urban Meyer when they were with BG only to have that coach leave after reaching the pinnacle (for a MAC team, i.e. the MAC Championship and a bowl victory) or a coach who provides stability but who perhaps doesn't quite take the program all the way to the top?

Obviously the best combination is the coach committed to the long term (i.e. willing to coach for Ohio for 20 plus years, like Coach Kehres with Mt. Union before he retired from coaching to become their AD) who can also consustently win championships but those kind of coaches don't seem to coach in the MAC.  After Coach Solich retires, I wonder if the short term kind of coach is the best we can hope for.

I thought they closed the Ridges to mental patients years ago. Seems like one of them missed the memo about liberation.

I think Frank still has 2-3 more good years left. From what I've heard, he lives to coach. Not sure what he would do upon retirement. And, I think he still wants to get a MAC Championship.

Not according to this article in this morning's Tampa Bay Times (sports.tampabay.com ) Nice read on Daz and Frank.

Sorry I could not provide the link. Frank says without Rod and Schaus he may be retired.

Frank was a class act around the bowl activities. Kick off luncheon, spent time with fans, and got a great effort from our team. I hope he coaches 5 more years.

Luke Fickel? Are you the one that promoted Lichtenberg too?

Jim Tressel.... if he ever wanted to coach again, he would be dominate in the MAC.  The guy is a great coach and great recruiter here in Ohio.

A sweater vest in Athens - please never. We have a level of dress standards in Athens that should never be compromised.

Not to call anyone out. but if you think Frank should go you're a fool. I have been very passionate about this in other threads and will not be quiet about it. Frank is an amazing coach and has done wonders for this program. Someone give me one good reason why we shouldn't want him here anymore. Reading things like this agitates me. People are so ungrateful for what he's done.

EDIT:Reading more most of you think he will just retire which I can see as well but no one should mention the word fire

Not a bad plan, should the situation arise. Certainly it's safer, and more likely to lead to longer term good results. What people forget is that when you go for the up-and-coming young coach, sometimes you get Clawson, and sometimes you get iCoach. Either way, 2-4 years later you get a new coach.

Here is where you guys are losing me. And please do NOT take this the wrong way, because i am in no way the we need a new coach camp However, some of you keep poo-poo-ing these 1-4 year coaching changes. However each school you've named has won an MAC Football title while we are again talking about next year.

Just wondering if any of you atttackers think anyone of the current staff will replace Frank when he does retire? For the life of me, I can't see anyone that jumps out to me. It is true that the QB's have been consistently setting new records regardless of who it is, but I'm guessing that is due to hurry up and more open offenses more than real talent level. Any thoughts ?

A.   Most importantly, a very Merry Christmas to all of you and your families!!

B.  Great question!  As a disqualifier I know virtually nothing about anyone on the staff, so take this for the grain of salt this is worth.  As an outsider looking in, there's no one on the staff that excites me as a potential replacement for Coach Solich.  Coach Dixon's done a great job with the wide receivers!  Is he head coaching material?  I have no idea.  Haines appears to be doing a great job with the recruiting.  Does that qualify him to be head coach?  Doubtful but maybe I'm wrong.  My point is, to me there's no one that screams head coach.  But I live over 200 miles away.  What do I know?

Again, Merry Christmas to all of you!
