I think Musberger usually does a good job, but he has one tendency that drives me crazy ...making extravagant statements prematurely, and also exaggerating.

He's doing it tonight...already talking as if this game is over and talking about SEC dominance, etc.

Makes me appreciate the old master, Curt Gowdy, and how he restrained himself and just told you what was happening. Play by play guys today are much more likely to loudly proclaim their opinions, but that isn't what they're there for.

He's the main reason I don't watch ESPN's weekly feature game, the Rose Bowl or the BCS CG.

While we're on the subject of annoying habits, what was with Matt Millen and the phrase "one hurt Buckaroo" during the Orange Bowl?  Jeeez.

There are other options to watch the game on ESPN2, ESPN News or Classic Sports with no announcer.

I'd rather listen to Musberger do play by play any day than Thom Brennaman.

Yes, this was a problem the whole bowl season.  Idiots telling you what the coach should be doing, how the players should be playing, what the fans should be cheering, what the vendors should be selling, etc.  Heck, we should just let these guys coach the bowl games and let the coaches into the booth to do the commentary.  Give me a break.  It's gotten where very few announcers just tell you what's going on in the game.  I always liked Bill Curry when he worked for ESPN.  I'd even watch games I was otherwise not interested in because I thought Curry gave me insights into the game and made watching the game an educational experience.  Lord knows I need all the Xs and Os education that I can get.  Mushmouth is close to the bottom of my barrel, just a notch or two up from Bill Packard in basketball.  Jerkstreet at least tried to give you some insights into why plays were called a certain way and who was blocking and doing other things to make plays work.  They out to have an option for every game where you could tune in and just have crowd noise and PA system for audio.  Maybe a new network ESPN4 -- Watching Just 4 You!

I'm not sure what you're talking about. Musberger never states opinions, only "facts."*

Notes:
* If other information is available,  or later becomes available, which appears to be contradictory, said information should be adjusted so that it conforms with previously stated "facts".

Is it just me or does it seem that ESPN is pumping up the crowd noise and turning down the sound on who ever is calling the game.  Maybe its to add some hype and excitement.  Maybe it's just my TV…  I guess that means I should probably think about a new one.. haha… It's a win win for me..

When FSU was on their final drive and the refs missed the horse collar, Musberger immediately jumped to the conclusion that both refs on the sideline were out of position to make the call. He didn't mention that they just completely gaffed on it. He made an excuse for why they didn't call it. He was clearly pulled down by the collar and everyone in the stadium could see it. You're telling me two referees watching the play couldn't? Come on Brent.

The officials were horrible both ways last night. They flag taunting on FSU (I have no problem), but don't call the spike on Auburn. Don't call the horse collar on Auburn, but also let FSU get away with multiple holds that were much more flagrant than one they called on Auburn.

At the end of the day FSU made fewer mistakes. Simple things such as containment/staying in their lanes doomed Auburn. Just before the fake punt I told my wife Auburn should simply field the punt with a fair catch, I did not say watch the fake, but they should have been in some type of safe mode after their roughing and a fumbled punt they managed to recover.

After 8 hours I was more tired of FSU than 8 years of the SEC.

Brent must have put his money on Auburn straight up, because he sounded downright depressed when FSU scored the winning touchdown.

It was a big 10 crew and my brother in law was the line judge on the play with the horse collar.  His job was to watch where the FSU player would step out of bounds.  The other official was trying to get out of the road and he may have missed it.  Slow motion makes things so much easier to see.  Remember that was a long play and the officials had to go a long way to catch up with the play.  The line judge stays at the line of scrimmage until after the snap and then follows the play.  It is not easy being an official.

That's neat to have someone like that in your family. Probably makes Thanksgiving dinners that much more fun. Yes, officials sometimes get a bad rap, but the only time I'm really critical of them is when they have time to make a decision, whether they huddle or review a replay, and still get it wrong (see Tom McCabe).

A LJ or HL will only get in front of a sideline play once!

I have a great deal of respect for officials and tend to hang out with a pretty good crew of them at post game get togethers.

That was clearly evident in real time ... my guess is at the post game watering hole they all discussed that one. I get the mechanics but on the front side he had a face mask and on the back he had the horse collar. Flag could have come on from far away too. Not many folks actually needed slo mo or replay to have seen that one.

Good points. I still find it peculiar that the crew missed the call. I know more people than just myself saw the horse collar as it happened, including people in attendance and sideline personnel, coaches, players, camera guys, etc. Shouldn't any official be able to throw that flag? Regardless if they are in the position to make the call. For example, if the back judge or umpire saw it, can't they throw it?

Not every official is watching the point of attack or at the ball action. Each official has a responsibility based on where the play is heading.

I'm sure any of the officials that sees it can throw a flag, but really, no more than a few of them are supposed to be watching that area of the field. As GoCats105 said, it's a lot harder than it looks on TV, especially in a play down the field, but it is something that shouldn't have been missed.
