Man, we are really short in offensive linemen. We better hope that we don't have any injuries or last year will seem like a good dream compared to the nightmare that will happen

No Mark Smith, either. We are down to seven returning scholarship linemen and bringing in six freshmen.

Ouch.

I knew about Tanner and we are deep at TE and 2 DE's gone also won't hurt as we are even deeper there.

The concern is 2 OLB's and 2 OL's who could have received considerable pt. Look for safeties like Toran Davis to get some looks at lb.

OL is a bigger concern. Look for true freshmen to get some looks. Depth chart could be:

RT-Watson-Levitt-Lowery

RG-Bristol-Gibbons-McCray

C-Powell-Everhart-Pruehs

LG-Lucas-Schilke-Lagenkamp

LT-McQueen-Murdock-Dudziak

Venham & Windham still on the roster. I thought that might be the case for Windham, but didn't expect Venham.

The lack of bodies at RB is concerning....we've got the 3 freshman coming in, but as weak as the running game was last year (at least compared to years past) it would be nice to spend some extra time working on that this spring. With only 3 RBs on the spring roster, do you go full contact with them and risk injury?

This has the makings of a train wreck, hold on to your hats, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Tanner was expected, and Bennett was rumored, so no surprise there. Smith has been battling injury, and hasn't played but a handful of snaps the last couple years. I think Smith, Atwell, and Grady would all have been 5th year Seniors, so perhaps they are on track to graduate this year.

Atwell and Grady were 1 and 2 at SLB, so that will shake things up, but most of the others haven't been playing. We knew there were some that would be gone because otherwise there would have been well over 85 known Scholarship players.

The bowl roster listed Haser at OL, the spring roster has him at DL. I wonder about this. I think he has a better chance of playing on the OL.

Other names expected but not found on the roster::
Cameron Wilson - WR
Skylar Schwarzel - WR
Spencer Schnell - WR
Neico Teipel - SLB
Brian Palermo - RB

So...Atwell, Grady, and Teipel are all gone. They were #1, #2, and #3 at SLB last year. I guess we'll see more nickle?

As for Haser, it may be an error to move him back to DL. That would surprise me, but it's always possible.

Not counting true freshmen, my guess is:
RT-Watson
RG-Wood (formerly Bristol)-Gibbons
C-Powell-Williams
LG-Lucas-Everhart
LT-McQueen-Murdock-(Haser?)

Plus, you have walkons Schlike, Alcorn, and Adams for a total of 13 offensive linemen in Spring Camp  (or 12 if Haser is back to DL).

I wonder if losing their offensive line coach made some difference to some of the guys. You would think it might.

Yeah but Smith leavin was no doubt injury. If Curtis and Welter were so highly regarded by the former coach then how come they never saw the field?

So Frank tells Lightner that he is the OL expert and makes these 3 star recruits sit for 3 years........uhhhhh.....not sure it happened that way.

I have long thought that Ohio's best lines in the Solich era have been when a high quality Tight End is on the roster. That to me is the biggest factor.  The attrition in my mind doesn't change the calculus for the season. Across the roster and in the recruiting class we have above average MAC talent. I know some on here would disagree with me but but we beat Akron, Eastern, Miami and UMass on talent alone. Looking at the schedule next year we replace Eastern with Western who was 0-12 last season. WMU is far from a MAC contender team. Kent and Buffalo were propped up by a couple of players that have greaduated. Northern Illinois and BG are both in Peden Stadium. Relative to the MAC schools that beat us last year we've lost less ground. Its projected to be a down year for the MAC in 2014 so no reason why we can't sneak out a MAC title if the coaches pull it together. At worst another bowl.

Welter played 3 snaps last year, as did Curtis. Mark Smith played 14 snaps. All three of them graded well for the number of snaps they played. Combined they earned 39 of the possible 40 points for 20 plays, which is a conbined grade of 1.95. The starter with the highest grade for the year was Powell at 1.89, followed by Lechner at 1.87, then Lucas, Prior, and Johnson at 1.85. The other occasional player with a high grade was Haser, at 1.90 (which is why I hope he's still an OL).

Perhaps Curtis and Welter also had injury issues? We just don't know. I do know that Welter and Curtis still show up on the eDirectory, so they are still enrolled, even if no longer on the team.

What I know is that this staff never stands pat. They are always networking. I wager the fall roster will include more names than those on the spring roster plus the known recruits.

I think this roster over time will prove to have errors.
