Bingo, click the link to the second article.  It was a hoax that many UMASS fans jumped on hard as fact, not bothering to follow the link.

I saw something today (ESPN?) that AAC isn't interested in expanding right now.

I may be in the minority here but I really hope that The Sun Belt tells them the same thing that we did-join our conference for everything or we won't have you.  I am getting a little tired of so many schools wanting to have their cake and eat it too.  The AAC is a perfect example of this as it's basically a stepping stone/halfway house conference.
I'm sure we have a few Notre Dame fans on this board but it irks me how everyone has to be in a power conference blah blah but Notre Dame.  I certainly respect their tradition but its hard for me to take a governing board seriously when they talk about equal opportunity etc. when schools get special treatment.   I wish the ACC would have told them that, yes, you can join, but it has to be for everything.

I'm glad the MAC took a hard line with UMass and said all or none.

Ok, I feel like I have taken a few swings on a dead horse here so I will stop LOL.

With Notre Dame it's more than just tradition; they have their own network contract with NBC for home football games.  That's a chunk of change they don't want to give up or have to share with 12-14 other schools.

I feel the same way you do.  You take a conference for its good and its bad.  UMass realizes that it won't get any bowl opportunities as an indie for several years so they need a conference affiliation at least until they become established in 1A.  They shouldn't be allowed to cream-skim.

I mean what other choices do they have?

UMASS going to the AAC is pretty much not going to happen, #1 is UMASS athletics budget.  I don't know what  it is off the top of my head, but I can't imagine it being much better than most MAC schools.  #2 is because once Navy joins in 2015, they're at a very nice set of 12 members. Unless AAC is interested in extending an invite to another team in the future, I don't see this happening at all.

Mountain West? Currently have 11 members, so adding a 12th isn't out of the question, and MWC basketball is pretty solid from top to bottom, so for UMASS hoops it may not be such a downgrade.  Whether or not the MWC is actually interested in taking UMASS ifs debatable.

They might have a chance at CUSA. I THINK (there are a lot of moving parts this year) that East Carolina, Tulsa, and Tulane are all going to AAC, which would bring their total to 13, but then they add WKU this year to make it 14 teams.

Since WKU is leaving the Sun Belt for CUSA, they'll be down to 9 teams.  So if they want to make it a nice even 10, they could add UMASS.

I would have to agree with OUcats82 though.  I hope that the Sun Belt makes an "all or nothing" offer, because I don't see them benefiting from this move very much unless they can get UMASS' hoops programs, but the Sun Belt is pretty much on par with the MAC overall as far as competitiveness goes, so I don't see that happening.

The AAC will expand if and when they lose UC, Uconn and I think one other potential school I can't think of right now.  Until then...things stand pat.  But if and when those 2-3 schools go somewhere the AAC will be looking.

UMass lives in a fantasy world. Football only membership is not a long term solution. Going independent is not a long term solution either. Their unwillingness to commit to any G5 conference other than the AAC is foolhardy and reckless. There is no pending offer from AAC on the table and yet UMass has drawn a line in the sand and have said that they will not commit to full membership to any other conference (except ACC and B1G which some of their fans think is a real possibility. lolz.).

Meanwhile they continue to dump millions of dollars into their football program that would make it virtually impossible to return to FCS. What is their long term solution if one of their 3 approved conference doesn't come calling? They don't have one. FB only is not a long term solution, neither is going independent.

Simply put, football dictates conference affiliation for all other sports, good or bad. If you weren't willing to sacrifice your bball team to join FBS then you weren't willing to do what it takes to join, and shouldn't have. You can't half ass something this major.

I too hope the Sun Belt rejects their football only offer just so we can get to watching what will be an epic train reck. UMass has dumped millions into their football program already, there is no turning back in that regards, but a very difficult decision is going to have to be made soon and it is a lose/lose scenario- football or basketball, who gets sacrificed?
