Finally! A Marriott property!

But I think the Messenger is stretching by calling Marriott's economy nameplate an upscale property. Just because it's upscale compared to the Super 8 doesn't make it upscale.

This is good news for all of us with occasion to visit Athens as well as for Athens.

It shows how jaded I've become, however, when a description of a Fairfield Inn as an "up-scale" property strikes me as a stretch.  I guess compared to the motels on Columbus Road, it's a true statement.

Yeah, I don't mean to be snide or snobby. Fairfields - most that I've stayed at - are generally fine and sometimes great places to stay. They serve their purpose, are clean and safe. I've stayed in much much worse.

Stretching it a bit?  Kind of like calling what we have here in town fine dining.  87 more clean rooms will be a welcome addition however and Jack and Sandy tend to run very nice properties.  They only go down hill after they sell them.

Tangent:  I remember wondering when they built the new Baker Center if they couldn't have offset some of the costs by offering space inside it to a hotel chain. It would've been a unique lodging experience much like staying in an old arcade.

By calling it upscale it will allow them to rape us all for $200 per night instead of the "economy" $150 raping we get elsewhere.

Free market champs, that's your cue.

We may not have malls.  But we also don't have first team All-MAC players.  Guys who just dominate pretty much every game--espec against MAC competition.

I suppose that the D has some prospects, maybe.  We sure seem no-name at linebacker.

I'm as big of an OHIO honk and optimist as you'll find on this board.  But reality also needs to be acknowledged.  Care to tell me who or what proves me wrong at this point?

You are the king of the straw man... if you don't have something to be mad at, you will invent an argument and rail against it for weeks on end. What might be nice is if you stayed on topic. This, for instance, is a topic about a new hotel in Athens. new business in our favorite home away from home is a good thing.

Start your very own playcalling thread, where you can start a conversation with yourself, respond to yourself, praising yourself, and calling out everyone who didn't respond. How many people do you have in there anyway?

That is a very interesting thought. When you think about the open design, I could easily imagine it going a couple floors higher up with that same open concept with hotel rooms wrapped around... Would have killed more than one problem.

Uhh, shall we start that you graduated in the 70's. So is it not correct that you have lived through the Burke-Lichtenberg-Bryant-Knorr years? And yet you complain about the accomplishments of Frank Solich? WOW!!

i am of the opinion that the number of all MAC players is less of a talent gage than the number of players a school is placing into the NFL. Having a D or O rely on strong performances from a few players is not a great long term approach. Ohio is close to the top in the MAC these days in NFL players. I wouldn't also assume because BG and Buffalo sent a lot of guys to NFL camps this year that the cupboard is bare for next season. The reason why Miami and WMU don't have anyone in camps isn't because of small senior class or great juniors back one more year. Its because Miami and WMU don't have the talent. Ohio before Frank would be lucky to send more than 1 guy to a camp a year. Talent was toward the bottom of the conference overall but Grobe was able to coach them up with the option offense for a few winning seasons. Today its a whole different level in Athens. First team MAC doesn't mean anything.

DCF--whatever...llke I'm the only one who threadjacks....  Don't be just another one who favors basham me instead of meet a reasonable point.  (Malls or hotels or not really more important than caliber of players?)

I said that we don't have any first team All-MAC guys.  I agree that we have some potential All-MAC.  Many teams do.  I want guys to prove it.  Herman and Lavon were recently close.  But none lately.  Didn't the 2006 team have a few.  Until it's proved on field...

The assertion that All-MAC level is not much important...really..really?

Someone needs to point out that N. Monroe Slavin is only 73 posts short of 5,000. Of course, 2900 of those posts have been in response to himself.

Another 2,000 are bashing others for not replying to his intelligent posts with equally intelligent responses.

Which, if my math is correct (and I think it is), leaves a little under 30 posts of any substance.

wait--Did someone change this thread to "write something here that proves thorough lack of talent"?  donut, sbh, squared, welcome aboard.

Funny that the guys who stupid insist I add no content can add nothing but slams at me.

Sad; it's so easy to tweak you guys.  You are aware that it's 'bring it' not 'lose it'.....it's 'come strong' not 'come lame'--aren't you?  The next sign of wit y'all show will be the first.  Be careful; a keyboard is a dangerous instrumentality.  When our 13 year old Yellow Lab blasts, it's more poignant than any thought you've ever had.

Okay, guys.  I've responded.  Now you can sploog over with excitement 'cause you can rev-up-your-inanity responses.

Start here:  you're one-note and boring.

gotta love guys who profess to ignore me but can't wait to read my next

Yes, that really is an interesting idea. Even if it was a very low number of available rooms (20?), that would have provided some nice offsetting income to the university. It might also be ideal for university guests, celebs, etc. that might want to stay right on campus. I'm also sure some high-rolling parents and alums would shell out some coin for rooms just steps from Court St.

It means there would need to be a 24-hour entrance/security/staff that comes with hotels though (but that could be the responsibility of the hotel chain subletting the space)

Can't you rent a room in Bromley? I had some friends that would stay there for our get-together weekends instead of crashing at our townie friend's place....but it's been a couple years since we've done that.
