Two points:

1. Northern Michigan is NOT in the MAC, yet!

2.  Ohio can't possibly schedule WVU and Marshall in the same season.  That would be too much a murderers' row for even the mighty Bobcats!

Why shouldn't Marshall be our yearly Super Bowl?  Why do we have this strange superiority complex over them right now after winning just 3 games in a row.  I'd kill to have had Marshall's success in the 90's and early 2000's and most of you probably would too.  Sorry, but I'd probably pick Randy Moss and Chad Pennington over Dave Zastudil on most days.

Don't get me wrong, I hate everything about them and Huntington - and thats exactly why we should be playing this every single year.  Having Marshall finally hate us back is fantastic for both programs.  I'd much rather be playing them in the OOC than some random 1-AA school.

Why does it have to be that big a deal? It's a good game. It's a traditional rivalry? It's well attended. It's close and has low traveling expense. It's a game that makes sense to play for both schools.

Well, here's a rumor for you:  Ohio is going to ink a series with WVU before Marshall.  OUr AD has a lot of connections with Morganhole.

Could be. They are in the same position Marshall was in CUSA before they added some closer schools. That is very hungry for close road trips that their fans can make. Its not that we have to get Alabama and LSU to visit Peden Stadium but we should be above loading the schedule full of no name Sun Belt schools at this point. Wake Forest and Tulane would be fine.

This game should be an annual game with no time off, period. Both fanbases respect each other, peppered with hate. Its a hateful respect. It is attended well, and if we cant beat OU then we know to just pack it up that season and count on a mediocre bowl game, ala the last 3 years.

Seriously, do you really think WVU would play a football game at Peden. Apparently you don't remember Don Nehlen saying that WVU doesn't play football games at a MAC school.  A good "closer" series for WVU would be with the University of Kentucky and The Ohio State University. Those series generate a ton of interest among WVU fans.

Rumor on the street is that Marshall wanted the 3 year break in the series hoping that Frank Solich would be retired by then, which in turn would give them a slight chance of winning :)

You make a good argument except for the first statement. Marshall isn't Ohio's biggest game of the year, nor should it be. The MAC title is Ohio's biggest goal, always. Whatever game gets Ohio that title is its "Super Bowl."

Yeah, I'd agree with the gist of this. I don't hate Ohio, but I get excited with that fire in my belly the day we play. I only get that feeling with a handful of teams.  I actually find myself pulling for Ohio when they're playing other teams as strange as that may sound to some Herd and Ohio fans; hell it feels strange to me too.

And there you have it.  What the an average Herd fan calls a "rivalry" with "hateful respect" is thinly disguised contempt for a team (OUrs) they regard as a patsy.  It wouldn't bother me for a minute if I never cast eyes on them again - football, basketball, you name it.  I won't be drawn into an argument about the merits of this "rivalry" because I just don't care - and it doesn't exist.

I just hope that whenever we start playing them again we somehow show we can stay on the field with their far superior program after we've humiliated ourselves so often against them in recent years.

While the logic behind this move may be above the pay grade of most in Huntington, beyond Schaus' connections in Morgantown I think it is very curious OHIO has already inked a home and home with WVU's conference rival Kansas and another school WVU was long tied to in UC.

Add in the fact that fans in Mogantown would get the bonus pleasure of knowing their playing a game in Athens would be an elite level troll of Huntington, and I think I feel pretty safe in penciling in the Mountaineers for games in those open years on our schedule.
