I think that this is a good guess.  I wish I had thought of it myself.  And, his parents were from SOUTHERN Italy and he went to school at Florida State. So I guess my instincts were right on target.

Not Corso.

Here's another hint: This coach's birthplace is within a 100 mile radius of Athens.

Right you are, OCF! Jim Grobe said that several times when he was at Ohio. He said it a few times at the Green and White coaches' luncheons. I always got a big charge out of that.

I saw a blog online about him saying something similar a couple of years ago at Wake Forest. Only difference, he also threw in "diaper rash" along with the hang nails and chapped lips.

Well, Jeff, when you gave that last clue, it all of a sudden hit me that the quote sounded like something I vaguely remember Grobe saying at a GWC luncheon.  And, let me point out Huntington used to be part of Virginia, before the late rebellion, and therefore Grobe could be considered "southern."

What American college football coach said:

"Don't tell your problems to people: eighty percent don't care; and the other twenty percent are glad you have them."

The same coach also once said:

"Ability is what you're capable of doing.  Motivation determines what you do.  Attitude determines how well you do it."

No, but this coach was born within a hundred miles of Athens, as the crow flies . . . as the road curves it's about 148 miles.

"Only three things can happen when you throw the ball, and two of them are bad"

HINT: It's not Brian Knorr

NOTE: I have seen this quote attributed to (at least) 2 different people.......but the earliest attribute it to one in particular, so that's who I'm rolling with.

I always heard it attributed to Woody Fistcuffs Hayes.

Not Schembechler or Tha Bahr.

Hayes is the person I have seen it attributed to sometimes, but not the earliest attributions.

If it wasn't Woody, there's a whole lot of false attribution in Ohio State football books, films, articles, novels, .....

Not Rockne.

Hint: He was a contemporary of Hayes, which is a big reason why there is confusion over who said it first.
