When you look at OHIO FOOTBALL's upcoming sched, as is the case every year, you see a certain number of games which should be slam dunk W's.

This year, that's probably kents, idaho, eastern illinois, miami.  In any kind of normal (I hope) Solich year, you could probably add several more ('tucky, cmu, 'kron, beefs).

So our season should come down to a handful of games, at this point in Coach's tenure.

My vote is that this year guys who are not 'with the program' are directed toward a seat on the bench instead of being allowed to play about all of the year.  Last year was not enjoyable at all.

The last 5 years have been arguably the greatest 5 year run in program history and during that time Ohio is just 1-4 vs Kent State. In those 4 losses we've scored just 1 offensive TD. What makes you think we're going to go on the road in the first game of the season with a new offense and get a "slam dunk" win?

As for E Illinois, they were 12-2 last year. They beat SD State and almost beat NIU. They lost their coach and QB but I wouldn't write them off as a slam dunk either.

And as for Miami- they're awful, they haven't won a game since they beat.... #24 and undefeated Ohio in Oct. 2012.

Ohio has a long, frustrating history of losing games it has no business losing, its hard to call any game a "slam dunk" win. But add in all the change in personnel and I don't think there's anyway to consider any game an easy win this year.

This bears repeating.

For the first time in several seasons, I have no idea how many games we'll win.  We could go 12-0; we could go 0-12; or we could be anywhere in between.  We have a lot of question marks on offense and a defense that is good but had issues against big O lines last season.  I expect several teams to be improved from last season, particularly Akron and WMU,  We get Fiami on the last game of the season and I think by then they will be much improved over where they are going in.  Probably the closest thing we have to a "slam dunk" is Idaho, but a lot there depends on how our guys progress over the first month of the season.  Our toughest games will likely be Terd, BG, NIU and Kentucky; the easiest should be Idaho, EIU, Kent and Fiami.

well it looks like from today's clue at usa today ohio might be up tomorrow on their list. I am being optimistic I know but I think there is a real chance the cats could be no worse then 5 and 1 going into the bg game. Yes there are a couple of question games there but Marshall can be beaten also. I think this will be a very good year. I remember being down going into the 2009 season and it is still one my my favorites. Hopefully this will be a great year also.

From easiest to hardest, I see::
Ohio Should win:
  Idaho
  @WMU
Ohio Favored:
  @Miami
  Akron
  Buffalo
  @Kent
  NIU
Tossup
  @CMU
  E. Illinois
  @Kentucky
Ohio Should Lose
  BG
  @Marshall

Figure two wins from the "should win" group, 3.5 from the "Favored" group, and 1.5 from the "tossup" group, and I project a 7 win season.

Okay, I've pretty clearly been the most disappointed/angry one regarding the last 15-18 games.  Just not good.

But the more I think about it (dangerWillRobinson), the more I lay that to lack of appropriate control over playing personnel.  I don't think that will happen again.

I'm hoping that we can get back to the spirit that we were up to the redhawk game in 2012.

I know that injuries were a factor at that point too.

So, let's trust Coach.  He seems quite high on recent recruit classes.  That mostly only leaves us with questions at O-line, qb and running backs.  And, it's not like we'll come up total zero at all those slots.  O-line depth is so key.

That said, I see no reason for us not to threaten double digit wins this year.  Let's hope this year's squad shows the team spirit of last season's hoopsters.

kents is a key game.  A win there will be a nice mark.

Monroe, I agree with most of what you have written here. On paper this team doesn't have what it takes to win the MAC, or even the MAC East. So? Neither did the 2006 team.  With the right attitude and effort, and some favorable bounces (most of which go to the team that works for them), they could win more than 7, even double digits. With the wrong attitude, they could end up home for the holidays.

The good news is that my sense is that this team has far better chemistry than last year's team, but I'll wait until I see how they respond when things get tough before making a judgement on that.

Our best teams were the teams that came up big on D and special teams. If we have that this year, I like our chances in any game. Can we have a team where snapping and punting is not such an adventure like the last two years? Our offense may not be explosive, but if we keep the ball and can run it a little better, that will suffice for me. no turnovers!

I'm glad to see that my good BA friend Monroe is back on his meds again.  When he's off his meds, he can get quite ugly.  BTW, I'm going to start taking those BHPs* (not to be confused with BPH!) myself.

*BHP = Bobcat Happy Pills.

I'm hoping this team draws parallels to the bball team and forges a new identity after its star class is gone by fixing some of the attitude issues and playing really hard, every second of the game, regardless of the score. If this team plays with heart, guts, and determination in a way that draws a sharp contrast to the last year and half I will be happy, regardless of he record.

Expectations check- Our first 3 games are @Kent, @Kentucky, @Herd. I'll be happy if we come home 1-2, anyone think we can win more than one of those games?

After Kent, Kentucky and Marshall, I'll be mildly disappointed if we don't win two of those. I know they'll be tough games, but this team

1. NEEDS to shake the Kent monkey. I'll be disappointed if we lose, AGAIN, to Kent.
2. Would be fortunate to beat, but certainly COULD beat Kentucky. If we lose a close one, I'll be disappointed in the missed opportunity. If it's a blowout loss, I'll be concerned for our season.
3. Needs to be well prepared for a likely very fired up Herd team who will have the voice of Chuck Landon in their ear holes screaming UNACCEPTABLE from summer workouts until kickoff. If we lose this one, I'll be disappointed because I hate losing to Marshall. It's that simple. However, the law of averages scares me in this one.

For that game, I would like to see the Bobcats wear undershirts with "Accept It" emblazoned on the chest.

Why not?

Note that in my picks I consider EIU a harder game than NIU. We'll see how it plays out as the season unfolds.

Talked to Pete Lembo yesterday ....glad to see we get a break from Balls.....he was quite happy to have beaten OHIO the last 2 outings....especially the Homecoming game at Peden. Nice guy with a great vision but truly living in the shadow of what is happening at NIU...He will be in the same situation as Brady Hoke in the not too distant future.

Do these guys at the Sentinel and USA Today know something about us we don't? Another day goes by and still we haven't shown up on their ratings list.

I would've been surprised if we had been in the 90+ group.  I'll also be surprised if we're better than 70.  As I recall we were in the 40s last season, but that was coming off a 9-4 year with the core of our offense coming back.  This season we have talent but lack experience.  I expect we'll get better as the season goes on.

Assuming my math is correct Ohio is not up next at usat. Ohio coaches whose last name starts with a letter in the first half of the alphabet have accumulated more losses then what is mentioned for tomorrow's team (342). The Bobcats did come in at 78 at the Sentinel though. I guess Texas State are the Bobcats also.

obviously Ohio is not up next at usat either as Ohio is not the second oldest public institution in the state of Ohio.

With buffalo's listing today USA Today says BGSU is the clear favorite in the division followed by us and then Buffalo. They have some confidence in that defense.

USAT's teaser today:

Who's No. 71? This program is 9-10 since last earning a national ranking.

Could be us.

 I looked at our record since the 12 akron game and I only come up with 9-9. Maybe I can't count but I thought we went 2-3 the rest of 12 and 7 and 6 in 13.
