...Every game Idaho has played so far they have trailed. Of course they are 10th nationally throwing the ball. That's all they do so they can keep up.

Simply doing it a lot won't get them to 10th; they also have to do it fairly effectively.

There is no doubt that passing offense was Idaho's strength. There is also no doubt that defense was their weakness. Ohio's offense looked better last week, but it was partly due to Idaho's defense, and only partly due to progress by the offense.

Eastern Illinois will have a significantly better defense than Idaho. They held Minnesota to 338 yards of offense even though the game was never close (they lost 42-20 after trailing 35-0). SIU managed 379 yards against them while beating EIU 38-21. Illinois State beat them 34-15, but only got 326 yards of offense. In their one win, over Austin Peay, AP only got 224 yards of offense.

What caused those losses? One thing that hurt them was turnovers. Against Minnesota they lost 3 turnovers (2 fumbles and a pick) to one. Against SIU they lost 2 (both int) and got 1. Against Illinois State they gave up 5 turnovers (a fumble and 4 picks) to one.

EIU will not be an easy win. This week we'll find out just how much the offense has improved from Week 1-2. I think Ohio will win, but I also think that for Ohio to win, the defense will need to create some turnovers. I think Ohio will win about 27-17.

A better defense than Idaho scares me because our offense remains a big question mark for me. These guys will make it close in my opinion.

I'm not sure the yardage totals for their opponents is due to their defense. Their opponents had a lot of short fields, primarily because of the turnovers. They didn't get much yardage because they didn't have far to go.

By game five of this season, at home, we should beat this opponent somewhat decisively. Should not be in doubt in the fourth quarter.

I found a point spread, and Ohio is favored by 6. That should mean Ohio has about a 60-70% chance of winning, which sounds about right. Put another way, EIU has a better chance of upsetting Ohio than Ohio did at Penn State.

Wrong thread. Anyway, I expect this to be a real game.

This is not the first time Ohio has hosted one of the top FCS programs. I would consider all these to have been comparable FCS teams:
2010 Wofford W 33-10
2002 Northeastern L 0-31
1999 Northern Iowa L 21-36
1995 Illinois State W 14-6

Really? You had to bring up Northeastern '02? I thought you were a friend of this program. Next thing you know, we'll be rehashing 44-0 as UB was barely above 1AA status at the time. Two of the darkest days of my fandom without question.

I brought those games up, not to knock Ohio for losing to those teams, but as a reminder that just because teams are I-AA/FCS, that does not mean they are bad teams, nor that they are automatic wins. Like the foes in those games, Eastern Illinois has very good talent, and they are more than capable of winning. If you want to skip over the '02 game and blame it on the coach at the time, then look at 1999 and New Hampshire for the warning, or, look at the win not long ago by FCS Appalachian State over Michigan. While bad FCS teams can be very very bad, the best FCS teams can compete at the MAC level, and sometimes they are better than that.

I have been worried about this game since before the season began. E. Illinois does appear to be having a rebuilding year this year after having a great year last year, but even so, it should be a competitive game, and I hope the crowd is loud. A win in this game is important if they are going to be bowl eligible this year.

First string talent at some FCS schools is very good. Often their first teamers are players who transferred down from FBS and are eligible to play without sitting out a year.

At the Div. III level, perennial power Mt. Union also has benefitted from FBS and FCS players who have transferred and are cleared to suit up and play without delay.

I'm a little less concerned about this game than I was at the start of the year, primarily because EIU hasn't played well vs better competition. Last week EIU put up big numbers against a pretty bad Austin Peay, but couldn't do much offensively in their three losses. They scored 20 vs Minn, but 13 of them came in the last 30 seconds of the game. And their other two losses weren't close, even though they outgained their opponents. They led at the half vs SIU but were outscored 24-0 at home in the second half. What'll be problematic is their up-tempo pace. They ran 96 plays vs Minn, 80 vs SIU and 83 vs Ill St. This will challenge our D and will likely keep the game fairly close.

I like Solich's approach to 1AA games. He preps for them just like any 1A team, so the team isn't looking past them. Even though we generally don't blow out 1AAs, in Solich's tenure there's only been one that felt like we didn't have control (VMI).

Our game notes show Brunis and Lowery starting on offense ahead of guys like Mcqueen and Sebastian Smith.

10 years in: and no MAC title... it's certainly time to be pretty much beating such as EIU decisively.

You mean like or more decisively than NIU did last season? So if Ohio beats them by more than NIU you will be pleased, right?

Even more odd, some guys that have started aren't even on the depth chart.

I can't speak for Monroe, but if Ohio beats them at all, I know I'll be pleased.

I'm totally on board with your outlook and lesson here. Didn't mean to blame the messenger regarding the '02 game. It was just so painful sitting there watching the Northeastern game. Northern Iowa, I actually enjoyed other than the losing obviously. They were a known quantity. NE not so much.

Because over the term of Coach our track record is comparable to NIU's--is that your point?

This discussion pretty much proves the point I try to make when talking about recruiting. We recruit a lot like a Top Tier 1AA school and/or the average MAC schools. Sometimes we coach em up and get a good result vs a Big team that is down(Penn St) or just lousy (Illinois). Overall, the talent is not in the Top 2-3 of the MAC but it certainly isn't at the bottom tow or three either.

I want to see us roll the eff out of somebody. Show an attitude. Don't let up.

Might as well be this week.

I pulled out my Playstation Portable the other night and popped in NCAA Football 2007. I pitted Ohio against EIU, and won 70-3. That will be my prediction... lol

Very rare where a Frank Solich coached team is going to massacre the opposing team, even going back to his Nebraska days. In the 197 games of his coaching career, his teams scored 50 points or more only 11 times. In most of those 11, the defense gave up over 20 points, so it's not like the game was completely out of hand.

That being said, I wouldn't mind it for once.

I predict we see the third team much of this game, which keeps the score down. It would be totally UNACCEPTABLE to win by less than three TDs. My prediction, OHIO rolls:

Ohio 45
EIU 7

Whitlow and Manley are both good QBs but other than that I don't see why we shouldn't beat this team handily. Being 3-2 going into the CMU game will be important in a chase for bowl eligibility.
