I see 3.5 point underdogs to open. At the beginning of the season it was probably looking like a 10+ spread.

The importance:
Obviously, it's a rivalry game, but also, if Ohio can win this game, they will put themselves in the driver's seat to get into the MACC game. If Ohio loses, the pressure will be on, because then Ohio will most likely have to win the rest of the conference games.

Can Ohio win it?
Absolutely. We saw an Ohio team that is capable of beating Miami in both the second half against Akron, and in the first half against CMU. The winning Ohio is an Ohio with a strong rushing game, an adequate passing game, and a strong defense. Ohio needs to stop Miami's running game, and force them to become one dimensional.

Can Ohio lose?
That is also possible. If we see fumbles, or a running game that can't move the ball, it will be difficult for Ohio to prevail. We don't know much about the status of injuries, and if there are key players who are injured, that will make the task harder. Lastly, Miami played their best game of the year last week, so they will have some confidence and momentum.

The early signs
The weather here has been calm all summer. Yesterday, there was a very, very strong wind from the West, over 20 MPH. That is evidence that something east of here sucks.

I put a Miami sticker on my vacuum cleaner and it all of a sudden started cleaning my carpet better. Coincidence?

Miami had touchdowns of...

75 yards (1st play of the game)
44 yards
24 yards
19 yards
5 yards (after passes of 22 yards, and 19 yards)

Defense has gonna have to be ready for the quick strike TD, and offense be ready to trade blows.

Miami got off to a rocky start against a rough schedule. I still believe they might be the best team in the MAC. This is a pivotal game for both teams.
With that let me add: "Muck Fiami!"

I’m cautiously optimistic that Ohio will win this game. I have a hunch that Tyus is going to run all over them. Nothing in football is more satisfying than a victory over Miami.

My key to an Ohio victory is to have a successful Ohio running attack. If Ohio can rush for >230 yards with no more than one fumble, I like their chances. I'm expecting a run/pass mix about about 2/3 rushes, but it depends on how Miami defends.

I'm not overly optimistic, but I'm somewhat surprised ESPN's Matchup Predictor is favoring Miami 71%

Since 2001, OU is 10-11 on the road, so that's probably a big factor. 9-4 vs MAC opponents though.

That may work, but if we fall behind we’ll probably have to pass more than 1/3.

While true, that's the point. The more over 1/3 of the time that Ohio has to throw, the lower the chances of Ohio winning. Conversely, if Ohio can move the ball reliably on the ground, and only throws when feel like it, as opposed to when they need to, the better the chances of an Ohio victory.

You can find the record book on ohiobobcats.com. Here's a direct link:
https://ohiobobcats.com/documents/2024/7/17/2023_FB_Recor...

The record you seek is at page 32, and there is much more to find in the record book. The record versus Miami currently stands at 42-55-2.

We're halftway through the season and Ohio has yet to give up a first quarter TD. Just FGs by Morgan St, Kentucky and Akron. Only three pts on the road. Shows good defensive prep, but we have issues making in-game adjustments.

You are a real riverboat gambler LC. You know what the winning % is when a team rushes for 230+ yards and only has 1 turnover.

As for their defense. You will see a loaded box and heavy coverages taking away the short passing game.

Except for the part where passes were only 1/3 of plays called. ;)

I'm just having some fun here. The offense at Syracuse was good enough to win, but the pass defense didn't get the job done. Ohio's pass defense has improved since then. Still, it will be an upset if Ohio wins this week, but I'm hoping for one.

Fiami will try to come after us with the front 7 talent. I love that match up with a QB who can run. Add defense that is looking better every week, I like our chances.

On the Miami board they’re noting that Miami is successful 42% on third downs -31st in country while only allowing 32% by their opponents . I’m not sure how we do, but we better get them off the field and prevent long drives where they shorten the game. By the way they have a bunch of long plays as well-including that 75 yard TD on their first play last week. This will be a challenge.

I didn’t say it was a 100%, but ask any college coach that line and they would take it.
