Wife and I are heading up to Mt. Pleasant from Chicago for this one.

I am very excited. I believe this game is critical toward our road to Detroit.
(Granted all MAC games are critical for the road to Detroit)

This is hard to predict. We have beaten three really bad teams and lost to a good Marshall team and a pretty good Kentucky team. Several of the teams on our MAC schedule that were awful last year look a lot better (Miami, WMU) and those that were good last year look worse (BGSU, NIU). Akron has shown a second straight year of improvement from being the worst team in 1A two years ago. We have Akron, NIU, and BG at home and WMU and Miami on the road. I have to think if Vegas tried to put a line on the rest of our games we would be about a TD underdog against NIU, who is probably close to the level of UK, at home and the rest would be 5 points or less one way or the other. This is with a lot of uncertainly about were this teams level of play actually has been so far. Things could easily go either way from here.

CMU has been a real problem for Ohio, both in recent years, and also long term. Solich is 1-5 against CMU, while Ohio is 5-22-2 against them all time. The last time Ohio visited Mount Pleasant was in 2011, and they came away with the win. I'm hoping for a repeat. CMU had 18 returning starters this year, so it's a veteran team, yet they have been up and down.

I forecast a loss in this game before the season, but the Bobcats continue to improve, so I'm hoping they can make me wrong.

They beat us during our homecoming last year, I say we return the favor this year. These next 3 game will define our season, win all 3 and its 6 bowls in a row and in the driver's seat for Detroit. Time to go to work.

This is a HUGE game. I don't see us making it to Detroit if we lose here. Very big difference between 4-2 and undefeated in conference and being 3-3 and also .500 in conference.

Win here, and homecoming against BG is all of a sudden massive. Akron got a nice win against Pitt and their MAC West crossover schedule is much easier than ours. We have to win this Saturday.

I see us getting past CMU in a close one. Offense has gotten into a better flow the last two games, defense is solid, and I think we win it at the end on FG and eliminate CMU from any shot at the MACC handing them their second MAC loss.

Biggest game for us in a while. I'm excited about this one.

Based on their last three (all losses: 3-40 Syracuse, 10-24 Kansas, 28-42 Toledo), we have a good shot here. But I saw CMU a bit against Purdue and thought that they were then pretty decent (won it 38-17).

I think this should be a pretty good college football game. Six games into the year, our newbies should be starting to hit their stride. We win this one if we show disciplined imagination on offense and either get a pass rush or cover the short routes better than we have to date.

A win here would be quite good.

Daz out of the dog house and hang's on to the ball provided a very nice change of pace that will be nice to see continued. If both RB's healthy, OC should not hesitate to use both early. Loved the set plays the offense ran in rapid style to start the EIU game; busted through the slow starts of earlier games and scored 7 on first possession.

I think this one comes down to special teams play and who makes fundamental plays when needed ie no muffed punts or a costly red zone flag or flag that keeps a drive going. Recall sitting in NE corner bleachers playing later to be conference champs CMU, and seeing a stupid delay penalty take the ball back from the goal line and then Boo getting stripped on the next play just when he was going in for the score. Snake bites like this must not occur.

OHIO wins on late Yaz kick.

Cannot afford to squander drives and points like in last season's homecoming flat tire. That game was the turning point in the season giving us the first glimpse of not being able to overcome and then later game cave-ins.

Hopefully we can get an early lead on CMU and get in their heads. Teams on losing skids can sometimes play like a cornered wounded animal, with nothing to lose, or have their confidence dip even more.

There does seem to be a bit of an interesting role reversal for this tilt from last year's contest.

Looking at their statistics it's pretty amazing the PF/PA differential in their 2nd and 4th quarters:

Probably a bit skewed from their Syracuse game but we need to make sure we put up some good points because I have a feeling they will too. Do not see a defensive struggle here.

The game reminds me a little bit of our game at NIU back in '06 as it is on the road against an opponent we have small historical success against and a win against them could springboard to a MAC East title.

Actually, we beat ourselves last year. The muffed punt that shouldn't have had an Ohio player within 30 yds; our inability to stop the run (they averaged 4.7 a carry); 4 turnovers. They still have a big O line, so the key will be for our D to stop their running game. And we need to hang on to the ball. Our turnovers haven't led to a lot of points this season, but they've kept us from scoring. Can't have that Saturday.

From what I understand, the depth chart doesn't always seem to be accurate with what is posted in the locker room. Not sure why.

The numbers for Ohio are very different:

Comparing the two, CMU jumps out to a lead, then runs out of gas. They do a little better after the half, then falter again at the end. Ohio starts slow, but gets stronger after the first quarter.

I guess that means the goal for Ohio is to survive the first quarter flurry by CMU, then wear them down, and pull ahead as the game goes on.

Let's see, during the 10 years of the Dark Ages - Cleve/Lichty - Ohio went something like 16-90. Grobe went 2-8-1 and 6-6 his first two seasons. The long slog back to .500 began with his third season - 8-3.

Syracuse and Toledo combined to outscore them 31-0 in the second quarter, otherwise, they're pretty even with the opposition.

I was at the 2006 MACC game and the home losses in 2008 and last year. Every one of them stunk. Haven't seen our men beat the Chips yet.

It'll come down to turnovers. When two teams are evenly matched, it nearly always does. (Excepting the opener this year against Kent, though I think we were a much better team and our fumble woes made it closer than it should have been.)

As Solich pointed out this week, Ohio has been playing much of this year with three true Freshmen playing on the offensive line, yet Ohio is leading the MAC in the fewest sacks given up, having given up only 3. That's pretty remarkable. I'd have to give a ton of credit to Lowery, Pruehs, and McCray, but also some credit to the new offensive line coach, who seems to be doing a great job.

Even better, we're also starting to see the running backs having a little room to run. The backs are good, but so often last year and early this year they were getting hit as they got the ball, or had someone in their face.

It still hurts when I think of Boo Jackson's fumble at CMU's goal line in the last quarter of the '08 game.

Agreed. As you know, the fumble came when Boo stretched - unnecessarily - for the goal line. No fumble, Ohio wins and that 4-8 season might have unfolded quite differently.

I think it comes down to whether we can limit T. Davis from big plays. I would feel much better about this game if he was still out with an injury. Although it sounds like Ian Wells should return, I'm assuming Carpenter will still be held out, so our secondary is still thinner than I would like to see.

and don't forget that after that fumble Ohio's defense stopped CMU and forced them to punt. Ohio had the ball near mid field with 2 minutes left when Boo fumbled again on 1st down and CMU recovered. painful.

If you go back and look at the game recaps of losses that year you see a lot of devastating turnovers that really costs us several wins.
