After looking at the injury report on the front page, I am beginning to wonder if I really should go to the game! Then again, it is Athens in October and I was there in the 80s and 90s so,why not?

The list looks bad, but it's not really as scary as it looks, given that a lot of players are "questionable", and few are "out for the season". On offense, it's not bad at all. Vick is out, but I think OUellette plays, and perhaps White and Brunis may return. I keep thinking Everhart should be back from his appendicitis, at some point, but who knows. Anyway, on offense pretty much all the starters will play, except Vick.

Defense is the big question. Up front all the linemen are healthy, but both OLB's are questionable (J. Johnson, B. Brown) and of course, Russell is out for the season. The CB are fine, but Safety will be a continuing adventure, if Ingol, Quallen, Carpenter, Scipio, and Jones are all out. That leaves Kristoff, Macer, and Toran Davis, I guess.

Given who Ohio is playing, and the fact that they usually line up with 3-4 WR, I tend to think that Ohio may play one extra CB anyway, so the injuries won't hurt as much as they might against someone else. My guess is that we see Bass, Wells, and Nelson all on the field at the same time.

What concerns me the most is that despite their weak D which we may be able to score on I doubt we could keep up with their O, unless our D plays lights out.
In addition I always remember that famous saying "On any given day any team can beat any team".

As Chris Schenkel used to say, "What better way to spend an autumn afternoon."

Of course, Playboy had a cartoon in response to that.

Actual scholarship athletes > Team of walk-ons

Afraid we get routed. We might as well play in the Pioneer League if you look at our roster make-up. It's discouraging with all the injuries...

Just looked at the line for the game on USA Today and it's OHIO -1.
How is this possible? Really? Does somebody know something we don't?

I think everyone on here knows all of Ohio's struggles but maybe they don't realize how bad Bowling Green's struggles are. No team in the country is giving up more yards per game than BG. Take out the VMI game, and they're giving up 600+/game!

A bad game for either team could equate to a blowout either way. It also could be a big advantage for Ohio to be at home.

The odd thing is that their defense is all 4th and 5th year players, Redshirt-Junior and Seniors. Here is a link to their game notes:
http://tinyurl.com/lfe3s27

DE - Thomas - R-Sr
NG - Royster - R-Jr
DT - Colvin - R-Sr
DE - Walker - R-Sr
OLB - Lynch - R-Sr
MLB - Martin - R-Sr
OLB - Senn - Sr
CB - Adjei-Bariman - R-Sr
SS - Sutton - SR
FS - Ward - R-Sr
CB - Hunter - R-Jr

That's a seriously veteran defensive lineup.

Edit - Colvin and Lynch are out, both replaced by R-Sophomores, and Ward is questionable, and would be replaced by a Junior, so it won't be quite as veteran as above.

If you look at their results, you can understand the line.

Housed by WKU (59-31) and Wisconsin (68-17).

Three narrow wins against FBS teams:

Indiana (45-42) - TD with 9 seconds left for win at home against 3-2 Hoosiers

UMASS (47-42) - UMASS fumbles with 2 minutes left on potential game-winning drive and BG beats 0-6 Minutemen

Buffalo (36-35) - BG scores TD with 2:19 left for home win over 3-3 Bulls

Today we find out how much fight this Bobcat team has. It's time for a good showing.

I think it's a solid game up until halftime and then BGSU pulls away.

Not Ohio. MIZZOU, top 10 last year, getting pounded by Georgia, 20-0 at half. Pinkel, old Toledo coach, there now.

Thoughts about today:

BG is better but not that much. Don't like to complain about the refs but that was the second worst officiating I've seen in a MAC game and the worst I've been at. Having a receiver "in the area" of an intentional grounding doesn't mean "somewhere in southeast Ohio." My guess is that penalties against Ohio were running two or three to one of BG's penalties until the 4th quarter garbage time. Looked to me like they were bending over backwards to help the visitors. You know it's bad when they issue a warning against the band.

Daz has to remember the situation. On the 4th & 2 run, he had a hole for two or three yards but instead took it outside where the WR was engaged with a defender. Of course, he was stopped short. If you need two yards and the hole will get you there, take it. We had a RB several years ago who danced around in the backfield instead of hitting the hole and he wound up with bench time.

I don't think we have a healthy QB right now who's capable of getting it done. Last week we couldn't get a TD from the CMU five; today we started at the BG 37 and couldn't punch it in. The best drive of the day started inside our 1 and ended with a FG. Our TD came in garbage time. There were a few dropped balls but mostly the misses were uncatchable.

Would like to see a fake punt on something other than 4th and 10. We had a 4th and 4 earlier at about the same spot on the field and BG tipped its hand that it was dropping into coverage. That should've been the fake.

Tackling. Wasn't there today.

Wonder why BG stopped using the misdirection pass to Green. It worked twice for big gainers in the first quarter because our D bit on the misdirection, leaving him wide open. Then suddenly they stopped using it.

Once again we got into an early hole and couldn't dig out. What puzzled me was why we deferred after winning the toss. With BG's rep for high-powered offense and low-powered defense, I thought we would've wanted to go on offense first.

The ticket office's seating chart needs to show where the visitors' seats are. Last time I was at Peden they were still at the south corner of the east stands, I think. Now, they're in the west corner of the north end zone. Our tickets were in section 108 and I might not have gotten those if I'd known. After the first quarter a couple of the airheaded BG cheerleaders moved up to about the three yard line and started leading BG cheers toward our section, where there was a wave of green and maybe four people with BG garb. After halftime I got tired of it and started yelling back at them {"CKS" and whatnot). Yelled at the refs a lot, too. Haven't made a spectacle of myself at a game for quite some time. Felt good. (My wife was at a conference so it was just me and my 13-yr-old son; performed by dadly duty of embarrassing him.) Not sure if the three cops who showed up next to 108 in the 2nd half were because of me or what. Finally in the 4th quarter Ohio cheerleaders moved back in front of our section and the BG airheads moved back into the end zone. The Athletics Dept needs to remind visiting teams' cheerleaders where their constituents are.

Speaking of cheerleaders, I didn't see ours in their usual garb. Instead they were in long pants and t-shirts. Looked like alumni. And where was Rufus? Didn't see him after he rode his motorcycle to lead the team onto the field. By the 3rd quarter, the molty falcon mascot was roaming the west stands like he owned the place. Tacky.

The band was fantastic, as usual, and the alumni band was great.

On a personal note, I walked up Jeff Hill for the first time in 40+ years. Proud to say I only had to stop once, about 3/4 up. Even stopped wheezing by the time we got to old Baker.

Despite the outcome, had a great time. Being in Athens most any day soothes the soul.
