There was an article in the Philly Inquirer the other day about the recent success of the Temple Marching Band.

Some of you may know that the Director of the Temple Marching Band is Ohio University alumnus and former member of the Marching 110 Matt Brunner. If you read the article you can see that there is an obvious influence, as Temple has tried to become more like the 110.

Unfortunately there is no mention of the 110 or Ohio University in the article.

I didn't even /know Temple had a band. When I think Temple football the last thing I consider is fans in the stands and a marching band.

Even when I saw this post my first thought was "Temple has band" I was puzzled. But I guess they must.

Actually, here's a show they did last month:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTlTYdlexz4

Looks and sounds mighty familiar. Not sure if it was pregame, halftime or postgame but it was only a "friends and family" crowd.

Wow! Like they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. The Temple band look good and sounded better. Congrats to them.

I've been to a few games, and that crowd looks about right. It's not a huge draw to say the least.

I wonder, if they were in Ohio, would they be the #2 marching band in the state after the 110? ;)

It is also great to see all the high school bands that are now changing to the 110 model for marching bands.. I saw the Lakewood Lancer marching band at Denison last Saturday night and their halftime show was outstanding. I believe their director may be a Ohio grad also.

A bit off topic, but I read Athens High School had a Band Competition on Homecoming Saturday with 15 bands participating. Why were there NO High School Bands in the Homecoming parade? I had a great time at Homecoming and everything was what you'd expect from a first class University; however, OHIO draws a terrific crowd for Homecoming and we deserve a better parade. The parade route is terrible. I understand the Court Street bar problem, but if we can't stop people from going into the parade route with barriers etc. good luck with Halloween. Sorry, but marching up Union Street down by the tracks is not the most appealing part of town to highlight to guest, and making the bands go up that hill is just silly. Also, how about getting the student body involved in creating floats etc. Make this a real destination event and broadcast it throughout S.E. Ohio. Homecoming should be our one opportunity each year to showcase our campus, town and University. We are missing out on a great PR opportunity.

Yea, I wonder why they don't try to make it go down College Street. I think if Court Street is out then College Street would be the next best option. Start on East State, go down College to College Green, then head over to Court and continue the same as it does now.

Years ago the parade would start near Morris Avenue and then go up State Street to College Street and then from College to University Terrace and then curve around to Peden. This year with all the construction near Clippinger I could see why they couldn't take that route. But next year I'd see no reason that this would not be a better route.

I'm glad you brought this up--good topic!

So what is bad about the bars? Drunk people making fools of themselves? So if you are a family stand down by New Baker and stay away from the Court Street Houligans. Comments from several 110 members state that it just isn't the same nor very interesting to march up union around a new mini traffic circle and go up the hill. Makes it tough to funk..

Who controls/selects the parade route?

The Route: I believe this was not about folks wandering into the street. The crowd outside the bar areas was terrible. Basically enough assholes in the crowd to ruin the route. They heckled the high school bands. So the high school bands pulled out. They have been ugly toward international student organizations marching in the parade. Drunk jerks blocking the sidewalks and treating anyone trying to follow a band or something in the parade badly. Basically making it a fully unwelcoming environment. The behavior by OU students was (is) pathetic. The result is a PR nightmare.

Getting the student body involved: Would be nice. But I think the days of kids building great floats are long, long, long gone.

Interesting, I had no idea marching bands and others were jeered. That's terrible. No one should be heckled at the parade - I agree with that. What about the College Street idea? That seems safe. I guess a few bad apples can spoil it for everyone. That's a shame.

I don't know. I think everyone should be heckled at a parade. Builds character.

Don't blame it on just current OU students. In fact, some of the worst offenders are alums who have returned for the weekend to relive their college days. Want evidence, just look at the number of posters on here who constantly reference coming back to Athens to get lit.

For several years the parade formed up on East State and did come down College Street to Union. Don't know why that route was abandoned.

Umm - "Getting Lit", and being an "A_ _ Hole" are not necessarily mutually exclusive - and I find it hard to believe that alums and/or posters on here often "come back" "just" to get "lit" - can do that anywhere. My experience over the years was the worst offenders were current students. And of that contingent - likely most of them did not end up as graduates!

"Heckling" at a celebratory parade such as Homecoming is certainly not acceptable (except for maybe heckling politicians in the parade - elected or attempting to get elected - those likely require heckling - by some constituency anyway).
