Coaches should have Tyler practice and utilize the pooch punt.  This is just plain bad.

Hell, Beau or Ryan up the middle on 4th and 15 looks pretty good at this point

How we could think letting 3 blockers stand flat footed while we let them bull rush with an 8 yard head start could ever work blows my mind.

Flat out, the guy shouldn't have a job. That was a pathetic display of special teams. Lost the game...

I fail to see the value of the three man wall.  Uh, do you see that in the NFL?  What college coach dreamed this up and why?  Oh, and if you are going to do that, when they rush 7 you have to stop them at the line of scrimmage.  You can't just let them run right up the middle 6 or 7 on the three.  And, what's with the wide spreads that let them get thru the line of scrimmage so easy.  I just continue to hate the formation just like I hated it in my 10/8 post!

You don't see it in the NFL because the rules are different. In college, you can put men downfield to cover the punt before it is kicked, whereas in the NFL that isn't allowed. Now, most teams would moderate that attempt to get downfield coverage when the defense is going to rush more men than the original blocking can cover. Instead, we call a "bumble the snap and then...?" play, or the ever popular soon to be award winning "go ahead and let them block it" play.

That day has come.

The poor  formation, poor blocking, punter holding the ball too long and getting skittish all came home to roost several times tonight.

Never seen anything like what happened tonight.  This coach must be deer in the headlights.

Boston +1.  The fire seems gone from this team when compared to where it was versus PSU.  I'm hoping it's just the large number of injuries but I'm not sure what's happened.

We've all seen this for MONTHS now. It's finally time to put to bed the notion that the coaches know best; as though this stupid, god-forsaken sport is some-of-kind of serious intellectual pursuit. Just line up they guys so that they can't block the kick dummy!

You sir fail to understand the punt formation we employed. (not saying it worked, cause' it didn't). However the blocks were on the snapper and punter, simply too slow. And was it Weller who dropped the snap for the safety?

True.....and hell yeah pooch punting will keep the other team just a tad afraid......pooch punting sounds like something illegal.

I live in Columbia, SC and South Carolina uses the exact same punt formation and has for years. I hate it and don't understand why but what I remember is they originally were doing it because they had a pretty bad punter and mostly did squib, pooch type punts that would roll which allowed the coverage team to get down the field. They have had their fair share blocked over the years and they still use that stupid formation with 3 blockers.

I am reminded of the horrible "sky kick" period where we all sat in the stands and went "Huh?" as our opponents started drives at mid-field week after week.  That was supposedly some kind of innovative strategy, too.  When was the last time you saw a team routinely "sky kick"?

There's a reason why innovation in football is glacial.  This game has been played for 150 years and over that time what works and what doesn't has been proven over and over.    This, too, shall pass and not too soon for me.

Wisconsin used it last year and had blocked punts for touchdowns two weeks in a row against MSU and O$U leading to touchdowns and narrow losses by less than one score.  I remember their guard who was on the right side of the protection group would stay in position and let the defender run right by for the blocks.

bobcatbob...great comment.  I don't know where this genious invention came from.  all I know is in the 60s and 70s, you blocked the opponent at the line of wcrimmage and let some "gunners" on the outside streak downfield.  That seems much better to employ than what we do now.  did anybody notice how BGs gunners just ran past our outside blockers?  And we didn't block their punts (because we never rushed one). I can't rememer if they had 3 guys in front of him (but I don't think so).

The Gamecocks lost to LSU because of blocked punts and this stupid formation.
