Now that we have sort of a depth chart, it's time to re-visit this.
OFFENSE
Offensive line - I actually think the depth chart posted is wrong, and that Wood will start at RG, as he did late in 2013, before he was hurt. The result will be a line that is very good, McQueen-Lucas-Powell-Wood-Watson. The best Ohio line under Lightner was Strum/Prior-Carlotta/Lechner-Allen-Herman-Flading/McGrath in 2011, and that line really made the backs look good that year. Without that line in front, the same backs did not look as good in 2012-2013. (Some blame the backs for this, but the difference up front was significant.) This line will probably not be quite as good as that 2011 group, but it will be close, and it has by far the best depth of any offensive line under Solich. With backups like Lowery, Cooper, Anderson, Pruehs, McCray, Gibbons, Langencamp, and others, injuries will have little impact. I believe that this line will, like the 2011 line, make the backs look very, very good.
Receivers - No real change to my comments above. The players are good, but still mostly Juniors or Sophomores. They will be good this year, but outstanding in 2016.
QB/RB - Again, no changes to my prior comments. Hopefully the offensive line will keep Vick healthy, and if so, QB will not be a problem. When Sprague or Windham play, they will look much better than last year. A year more experience makes a big difference, and having an excellent offensive line does, too. I'm really looking forward to watching the running backs behind this offensive line. I believe they are going to have a really good year, and that will open the passing game.
Overall Offense - No changes to my comments. I think this offense will be able to consistently gain yardage on the ground, which will open up the pass, and will allow them to finish drives in the red zone. I look for them to average about 28 points a game, which is average for the 2010-2014 time period.
DEFENSE
Defensive Line - No real changes to my comments. I still believe that how good the defense in depends on how the defensive line turns out. I'm cautiously optimistic that they will be good.
Linebackers - I like seeing the 5th year Senior transfer from Iowa, Collins, jumping up the depth chart. The linebackers were already good, and adding in another experienced and talented player can only make them better. I really like this group.
Defensive Backs - I don't see Carpenter on the depth chart, but I've had my doubts whether he can play anyway. With all the injuries at Safety, there are a lot of guys with experience, and factor in three Senior corners, and this is a veteran group.
Overall Defense - In the second year with this new defense, I expect a great, not good, defense. My goal is for them to hold other teams to 21 points a game, down from 24.8 last year. The best in recent years was 21.9, back in 2009.
TEAM AS A WHOLE - Reiterating what I said above, I like this team a lot. I see a balanced, strong defense, and a competent offense. I think the defense can take the ball away quickly, and the offense can sustain drives. This will be a competitive team that should never be blown out, and a team that can play with anyone on the schedule. The schedule is not favorable, and whether they can win the East this year will depend on the outcome of a lot of games that may be very close.
