Back to back winning seasons following a strong 2012 would get the invite. It is the back to back undefeated seasons that non power 5 basically have to achieve.

Maaaaaaaaybe, but I'm still doubtful. Boise State 2008-2010 is the closest comparison. They lost 1 game in 2008, a one-point loss to TCU in a bowl game, and still couldn't crack the top 4 in 2009.
They did crack the top 4 early in 2010, rising as high as #2, but were #3 by the time of their only loss to Nevada.
The difference though is (a) the deck is stacked even more against G5 teams now with the playoff committee, and (b) Boise's schedule over that stretch featured more significant wins, including a road win over #12 Oregon in 2008, #14 Oregon at home and #3 TCU in 2009, and #6 VaTech in 2010 (plus the aforementioned one-point loss to a #11 ranked TCU and the overtime loss to #19 Nevada in 2010).
If we had won every game in 2013 and 2014, we would have a road win over a #9 Louisville team in 2013 and a #14 NIU team in the MAC championship...and that would have been it for wins over ranked teams.
