Word from some players is watch out for Windham if coaches give him a chance...they said he was levels above the other QBs during Spring Ball and has worked hard all summer. Has 2 years left they seem to think he will get a shot if Vick is injured or struggles. Very accurate and has a huge arm.

Not hoping for Vick to struggle or be injured. To the contrary we need Vick to be so effective the coaches will be free to allow Greg several series per game without come from behind pressure. Only problem with this for Greg is in such circumstances it would be Brown/Irons getting all the touches. Still, I hope Greg gets his game time with whichever WRs he is getting to know best.

The backup qb (or in this case third string) always gets fans hopes up due to the unknown factor. I do believe Windham has the best arm of the group and should definitely be ahead of Sprague, but hard to imagine he gets much playing time unless injuries occur.

There were times last year where I really wanted to see Windham. Would still like to see what he's got, particularly if the others struggle.

From what I've see, my personal belief is that Windham has by far the best arm of the top 3. (I haven't seen Maxwell, Krizancic, or Duckworth, so I can't compare him to them.) At the end of the BG game he really had a live arm, and an accurate one, and I think he completed something like eight in a row.

I presume there are reasons why he was behind Sprague, and my guess is that it has to do with one or more of these, but which, I don't know:
1. Understanding the playbook and audibling
2. Game management
3. Ability to run the ball
4. Ability to read/make decisions on options
5. Ability to scramble
6. Leadership ability

The year he had away from football put him behind, and he has had to work hard to catch up. As good as he looked last year when he did play, I can't imagine that he can be so far behind that he can't close the gap.

I'd love to see one of the QBs have an awesome fall, and really take charge, and become a clear number 1. I think any of the top three could do that, and I definitely don't see any reason it should only be a two-way race.

Well, last season someone, perhaps you, might have popped off in that same manner about Mr. Ouellette. But, based upon how they opened the door for A.J. I would expect any player to receive any chance he has well earned.

IMO, Solich and staff play favorites and give opportunities to some while denying them to others, sometimes for reasons unrelated to talent/performance. I think this approach is what led to the mutiny of 2013, where some % of the team quit on the coaching staff. So I'm skeptical...but we'll see.

However, when I combine that thought with the nonsense we've heard from the coaching staff regarding the QB position already, I'm increasingly pessimistic about our chances to improve the offense.

Wait a minute. OUellette only got a chance as a desperate go-to when the three guys in front of him all showed inability not to fumble. (I think it was three guys.) It wasn't as if the coaches showed that they knew that OUellette was the guy from the get go.

I can't remember Windham completing 8 in a row at the end of the BG game. But if that is so, I'd sure as hell have given him some more play. 4 or 5 in a row could be lucky or the defense not being prepared. 8 in a row is edging into 'this guy seems to have it' territory.

Sorry, but over the years there seem to have been too many instances of not playing the right guys the right way.

I have only seen Windham play very sparingly like everyone else. My observations are as follows: He looks rusty due to a lack of playing time. He throws the ball very well and has a strong arm, he seems athletic and has quickness when evading tacklers, he looks smaller than DJ/Vick although he is listed as about the same size.
He was a three star recruit coming out of HS and had an offer from Cincinnati as I recall.
With our QB issues over the last two seasons he doesn't seem to be able to get much playing time which is puzzling.

Monroe, you are right, players really need to produce when given opportunity like Ouellette last year. Like Vick's four TDs in a game showed he might "have it."

Oh, and when you finish a post like above it is common to follow with "IMHO or JMHO."

I looked it up, and it was 7 in a row:
1st and 10 at OHIO 38 Greg Windham pass complete to Chase Cochran for 6 yds to the Ohio 44
2nd and 4 at OHIO 44 Greg Windham pass complete to Chase Cochran for 6 yds to the 50 yard line for a 1ST down
1st and 10 at 50 Greg Windham pass complete to Aaron Bradley for 12 yds to the BwGrn 38 for a 1ST down
1st and 10 at BGSU 38 Greg Windham pass complete to Aaron Bradley for 24 yds to the BwGrn 14 for a 1ST down
1st and 10 at BGSU 14 Greg Windham pass complete to Sebastian Smith for 6 yds to the BwGrn 8
2nd and 4 at BGSU 8 Greg Windham pass complete to Sebastian Smith for 4 yds to the BwGrn 4 for a 1ST down
1st and Goal at BGSU 4 Greg Windham pass complete to Dorian Brown for 3 yds to the BwGrn 1

On the next play BG took over at their own 21, and it doesn't say how. Perhaps a fumble, combined with a penalty?

In any case, for the year Ohio's pass efficiencies last year were:
Vick 130.9
Windham 129.9
Sprague 99.9

As I said before, however, there is more to being a QB than just passing. In whatever areas he was behind, Bobcatblitz assures us that he has been working hard, so we may see a lot more of him this fall.

But Paul Graham says it doesn't matter because the coaches have favorites and don't want to play the best player for that reason. Go figure.

The old joke, "who is the fans' favorite QB? The second string QB", maybe should be modified to "third string". We always like the ones we don't see because they haven't made any mistakes yet, so we project the good things we have seen them do, and presume they will do everything else equally well.

Hate to break the news to you but as great as a staff that Solich and company are they do play favorites and hold grudges against players. A lot of D1 sports programs operate the same way.The coaches want to keep their jobs most could care less about how talented a players is if they dont trust them or they are in the coaches doghouse.

I'm sure that's true. It's part of human nature.

But given the standard--W's and L's--a coach ought to be able to communicate and manage well enough to, for the most part, get the best out of his best players.

At some point, if this is a consistent problem, then the problem is not the players; it's the coach.

I'm very sure that there is not a human alive that does not, to some extent or others, "play favorites" or "hold grudges". We all form opinions of people, and those are based on what they have done, and what we think they are capable of, and the latter is by it's very nature a function of our perception of that person. I'm equally certain that no coach or manager is going to be very successful if their perceptions are way off, or their grudges are out of line. No doubt all of us have had situations where we felt someone didn't treat us fairly, or had a prejudice of some sort against us, but in my case I've come to realize over the year that most of those cases were caused by the person in question valuing things differently than I did.

Of course they will only play the players they trust. Any player that wants to play needs to earn that trust. Go back to the Kent State game, and as an example, if Dorian Brown hadn't fumbled, I think he'd be the starter today. However, he did, and AJ didn't, so we are where we are.

We need to take his performance vs BG with a bit of salt. It came on Ohio's last drive of the game, when BG had it iced away and was playing subs, for the worst D in MAC. (The drive ended on a Brown fumble -- the only run of the drive -- and a 15-yd personal foul penalty after BG recovered.) The rest of the season he was 2-5 for 26 yds. (bad percentage but a decent per-completion average). He's a junior this season so he should get more of a chance to show what he can do.

Good points Pataskala.

I would add to what I said above that there is no doubt no team in the country where some subs think they should be starters. Honestly, I hope all of Ohio's subs think they are good enough to be starters. The teams that win are the ones which do not let that divide them, and who play together as a team with a single goal, winning.

In addition, the defense was giving him short passes, allowing Ohio to get first downs while chewing up the clock. Five of the seven passes were for 6 yards or less.

Got to thinking about my earlier post last night and there's a correction: he was 3-5 for 26 yds the rest of season. That's a good percentage but a very modest per-completion average.

I agree with an earlier post that we should like to see players who aren't happy sitting the bench and who are eager to take charge. For me, Austin Everson comes to mind. He got his first start against UCF in '03 and really took advantage of it. As I recall his first pass went for a TD and the team rolled to a 28-0 win.

IMO, with this staff it goes beyond the normal doghouse. Watch the 2013 BG game to see a team that has completely quit on their coaches...and I believe this is the root of the issue.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I have zero confidence in this staff to make the right personnel decisions.
