That BG game was typical MACtion, with Ohio winning 44-37. That got me wondering, how has Solich fared in games involving MACtion? My guess was that, with his orientation towards rushing offense, and rushing defense, he has fared well in low scoring games, but not so well in high scoring games. What I found surprised me.
Defining MACtion games as ones where both teams have over 30 points, Solich between 2005 and 2007 Solich was 2-3 in MACtion-style games, beating Kent in 05 and EMU in 07, while losing to Wyoming, Toledo, and Akron in 07. That was about what I expected to find. That was not at all what I found since 2007, though. From 2008-2013 Ohio is 10-1 in MACtion-type games:
51-31 W over VMI '08
49-42 W over Akron '08
31-30 W over NTSU '09
44-37 W over BG '09
38-31 W over NIU '09
38-31 W over La-La '10
37-38 L to Buffalo '11
35-31 W over Temple '11
37-34 W over UMass '12
38-31 W over Buffalo '12
34-31 W over Marshall '13
If you want to throw out VMI since it wasn't close, he's still 9-1 in games decided by 7 or less, where both teams have over 30 points. Who knew?
