According to Marshall fans this is our Super Bowl but for them its just a trap game (that they obsess about constantly) so I don't know if it can be considered a true rivalry. In fact, discussing how Ohio is so much more into the series than Marshall is one of their fans' favorite topics, they talk about it ALL the time.

Its hard for them to get up for a game when their players are so vastly superior (obvi) to Ohio's and the only reason Ohio ever beats them is because Marshall loses the game by giving Ohio turnovers, not because Ohio forced those turnovers and managed to score points.

So, sadly, I do not think Marshall qualifies as a rival.

As a Marshall fan, I can tell you this is not true. We do not feel we are "above" Ohio, nor do we feel our players are above yours. Nothing but respect for the Bobcats. It's hard not to feel that way since you've beat our ass so much lately.

This is a weird rivalry because I don't hate Ohio and usually in a rivalry there is hate. I want to beat y'all and I know that's not easy to do but before and after the game I root for y'all to win. I would never do that for any other so called "rival".

I know our team gets fired up to play Ohio. There is no "this is a trap game" mentality. I love the game and it should be played every year, no exceptions.

I think this game is always a measuring stick for The Herd. If we can beat Ohio then we have a good chance at a good year. With that being said, I hope we beat y'all by 50. Go Herd!

I'm very sure that Chuck Landon felt that Marshall is significantly above Ohio, but his tone this year was much different, as if he was contemplating the paradox of why Ohio has been winning half the games if Marshall is that much better, and it suddenly occurred to him that maybe there was a reason.

I don't hate Marshall either...but there's no team I enjoy beating more.

Marshall is a lot easier to root for since Doc has changed the program culture...he's made a huge difference. So other than Saturday night I hope they win em all.

Marshall has 40 guys on their roster from Florida, two dozen transfers and questionable academic standards then tries to pass themselves off as a collegiate football program worthy of being our Rival?
I think not.

I don't think that was intended to be a reason not to beat them. I think it was a reference to Jeff's comment:

Like ytownbobcat I have some question about just how much the culture has actually changed.

Changed or not, BEAT MARSHALL!

I'd be really curious to hear what the players would say about this. I said this was our "most heated" rival and I was saying that commenting specifically on football. I think our football players would agree. When it comes to an institutional rival, there is no question it is Miami.

Some mentioned rivalries with all of the MAC East. In basketball, I always felt a little extra rivalry when playing MAC East opponents. Akron, Kent, BG, Buffalo and Miami. All big games in basketball IMO even if one of those aren't good one year. I don't feel that as much in football. It is obviously always a big game if it affects our chance to make the MACC, but in basketball there is more of a "rival" feel.

As others have mentioned, AKRON is really hated in basketball. That is easily our "most heated" rivalry there. I consider both Miami and Akron big rivalry games in basketball but each have different feels.

+1 on the approach with hoops.

I would be curious to have one of the Marshall fans comment on their opinion of this, and relate it to who they consider other rivals to be. I've heard WVU mentioned. Who, in C-USA, is a rival to Marshall?

I would say Marshall's bigest rival is wvu. Just go to the two main Marshall fan boards and see the smack posted between the wvu and Marshall fans. Check out the wvu message board and it is the same. They play each other in basketball in Charleston every year and split the tickets. The basketball game always sells out and there have been record crowds (40,000 plus) for the football games in Huntington and a few of the best crowds ever to attend a football game in Morgantown was against MU.

Hard to say in CUSA since ECU and UCF left.

Right now, Marshall is out biggest rival in football. I am bummed this will be the last Battle For the Bell for at least 3 years.

The 2012 loss against Miami hit me hard and really refueled my hatred for them.

In basketball, right now, it's Akron. And Miami.
