They are always looking for a batter deal and then fall back to us when they fail. Plus Huntington is a sewer. Plus they have no academic standards.

You're just flat wrong. As far as I can tell they like CSA and have no intention of leaving. And remember we have some communities that are pretty undesirable right in our own county. Pot kettle black.

I agree that historically, Miami is our biggest rival. But like Gallia Cat says, the game that has driven passions for a long time now is Marshall.

I remember how intense the Ohio-Miami basketball games use to be. The Convo and even Millett Hall would be standing room only! What happened? Why did it not translate to football? My guess is it comes down to the decline of Miami's football and basketball programs. Now in Miami's defense Ohio's football program was so bad for so long that no one considered the Ohio game to be a big game.

I guess the rivalry just needs Ohio and Miami to be at the top of their games at the same time.
That's exactly it. we haven't had good teams at the same time in football.

Marshall is our biggest rival.
Based on what? A handful of competitive years? Geography? No way. Despite the last 10 years or so of relentless apathy from their fans and willful neglect by their ADs, Miami will always the rival. We compete with Miami for students and prestige in addition to meeting on various courts and fields multiple times a year. No student cross-shops Marshall and Ohio.

We play Marshall most years in football and the series has mostly sucked, historically. At one point, Ohio won 11 of 12. At one point Marshall won 10 of 11. We play them because they're a D1 school that is in a similar conference and it's an easy bus trip. There's nothing wrong with that, but I fail to see a juicy rivalry based on the last four years (which featured three blowouts).

Even though the T'erd rivalry has been very heated and very entertaining the past six years, I still think Fiami is our top rivalry. Even with the unbalanced MAC scheduling through the years because of the MAC having 13 teams (first with Temps, then with UMass), we've made sure that Fiami is on our schedule. T'erd is about to go on hiatus. I think there's more sour lemon in a Fiami loss than in a T'erd loss.

I have a hard time disagreeing with those on the Marshall side of this discussion as the greatest rival. It's the home game I've marked on the calendar for the last two times it's been at Peden. The only reason I'm highlighting Miami is because it's Homecoming. Geography has a little to do with it, but the fact that Miami has such apathetic fans, while Marshall fans match OUr enthusiasm is my argument to back Marshall as the top football rival.

If OHIO and redhawk and stupd cow are all good such that our game vs. redhawk and vs. stupd cow promise to be good ballgames, which draws the biggest, most fervent OHIO crowd?

I still say it is our conference teams, specifically the east. I'm looking forward to the games with BG, Kent, Akron and Miami this year in particular. Can we beat BG at their field, Akron wants to beat us badly and Kent seems to trip us every so often. These games are way more important than Marshall. We do not even battle over the same recruits as often as you would think being so close. It is just another out of conference game to me.

I think there is no way to have a set top rival. It depends on the sport and the time period. Right now I would say in fb our biggest rival is Marshall. At least for the past 5 years. The Mashall game this year means way more to me then the Miami game. For basketball, I would say Akron for the past 5 years. No game really has the same feel as Ohio Akron does. Exspecially when we played them in the MACC two straight years

Well, back in the late 1960s and early 70s it was definitely Miami. Who can forget Bo saying "Ohio will not be MAC Champs until hell freezes over" and all that nonsense. Dag, maybe, just maybe, he really cursed us! At any rate, I really miss those days. It's too bad OHIO and MIAMI can't BOTH get back to being good at the same time like it was then.

A rivalry is only as good as the two teams involved in it. Miami won for so many years, they started caring less. Now, we are the winners and the interest seems to be waning on our side!

Guess I feel qualified to comment on this one.

I've always like the wording that calls Miami our bitter rival, but Marshall is the backyard rival. Marshall feels somewhat like a neighbor while Miami is the jerk that thinks he runs the town.

One way to look at it is, if Marshall and Miami play, who do you hope gets the win? To me the one you want to lose is your biggest rival. And to me, that will always be that team from Oxford.

I will say that for people that arrived on the scene post-1970, Marshall might appear to be a bigger rival.

I would root for Miami. I always root for the MAC in non-conference games plus enjoy seeing Marshall lose to a school from and conference it hates.

Whomever said Miami is an institutional rival where Marshall is a football rival had it spot on.

I love both of these rivalries for very different reasons. I hope we play Marshall every year and I hope the series stays just as exciting as it has been. I will be decked out in my Bobcat gear this weekend hoping to play a little Anita Ward on the Jukebox after the game.

I put Marshall in the same category as Cincinnati and Temple. Regional rivals that make for non-conference excitement. I'd like to see a mix of series with all 3 schools as they make quality home games. If Ohio wants to continue to play regional P5 schools on the road like Purdue, Kentucky and Pitt that are beatable I guess that is OK. At least its a winnable game. I'd rather have Cincinnati, Temple and Marshall in Peden than Wake Forest or Kansas just to say its a P5 in the stadium.

Excellent point! Although I have to admit, I have a really tough time rooting for Akron at all during basketball season.

I like this approach a lot, and I agree, I hope we play Marshall in both sports for years to come. (even though I know it's not set up that way right now)

For me its the difference between conditional and unconditional. The rivalry with Marshall is conditional- its specifically regarding the sport of football and depends greatly on both teams being evenly matched.

Miami, on the other hand, is unconditional. I want to beat them in anything, anytime, anywhere. No exceptions.

I'd be really curious to hear what the players would say about this. I said this was our "most heated" rival and I was saying that commenting specifically on football. I think our football players would agree. When it comes to an institutional rival, there is no question it is Miami.

Some mentioned rivalries with all of the MAC East. In basketball, I always felt a little extra rivalry when playing MAC East opponents. Akron, Kent, BG, Buffalo and Miami. All big games in basketball IMO even if one of those aren't good one year. I don't feel that as much in football. It is obviously always a big game if it affects our chance to make the MACC, but in basketball there is more of a "rival" feel.

As others have mentioned, AKRON is really hated in basketball. That is easily our "most heated" rivalry there. I consider both Miami and Akron big rivalry games in basketball but each have different feels.

+1 on the approach with hoops.

I would be curious to have one of the Marshall fans comment on their opinion of this, and relate it to who they consider other rivals to be. I've heard WVU mentioned. Who, in C-USA, is a rival to Marshall?

It used to be UCF(basketball) and ECU(football) imo. Very competitive and passionate fan bases similar to Marshall.

Teams that are leftover are Southern Miss who unfortunately hasn't been good in a few years, UTEP, and Rice which are in the West and there's nothing really there with them either. UTEP has a nice fanbase, but too far away.

And then we have new guys itching to make rivalries, while some have rivalries formed from the Sun Belt.(FAU/FIU) (MTSU/WKU).

I don't consider any of the new schools a rival. WKU may be the most viable candidate, but ODU and Charlotte will not stick to us and vice versa.

Myself, I'm just waiting for the AAC invite to happen so we can get back with the old crew... and if a rivalry happens in the meantime, so be it!

Is the next Marshall series a 2 game or 4 game home and home? I thought it was 4 but wasn't sure.

5 years? It's been Akron since the moment Andy Hipsher grabbed his crotch while dancing past the O-Zone in the Convo in 2002.

Do you remember the context of that quote from Bo? Miami had beaten us 22-15 and they were headed to a MAC championship. OHIO had also lost of Kent State, but after Miami beat us it was learned that KSU had to forfeit its win because an ineligible player had participated. That forfeit put OHIO back in contention and we ended up tied with Miami for a co-championship. Bo's statement, as I remember it, was made right after he received the news Miami would have to share the championship with OHIO because of the Kent forfeit and went something like this, "They can play football in Athens until hell freezes over and they still won't deserve the championship."

Remember it well, OCF. I'm still thinking Bo's curse lives on to this day...or did we win the MACC outright the very next year. Been too long ago...

I think it's only two games..

At the current time I think Marshall is our top rival. The games have been competitive with great crowds at both locations. Whomever idea it was to take several years off should be fired. I heard Marshall wanted to continue with no break and it was us that took the break. Don't know if that's true or not but its what I heard.
