Rough...

Perhaps I am ignorant on something here. Shouldn't the portal open AFTER the national championship game?

That's how free agency works in professional sports.

Per above - know many who have made it a career from rec to college level and are earning a solid living.

"Top coaches" - if you mean a Coach K, Saban, etc. No. If you mean reached coaching level at college level and earring millions a year - Archie Miller is a quick answer - a better answer is take a look at OUr coaching staff, Phys ed., American Studies, Recreation, Leisure Studies, And...gasp...Coaching.

They are studying what interests them and what they can make a decent living doing. May be ridiculed around the water fountain, but many are on scholarship and are graduating debt free with a college degree and experience that provides a living.
I have have no disagreement with anything you posted.

If you're happy with your education, career, and "life" you can't ask for more.

My problem is with college athletes being put in "stay eligible" majors by their coaches where, if you don't beat the odds and make the pros, you don't have much of an education to fall back on.

They also make coaches unavailable until after the playoffs.

They fumbled the entire portal process in every conceivable way. It's almost art.

I think the problem with the players is enrollment in the new school for the second semester. This all would be moot if everyone had adopted the superior quarter system.

I agree that would be much better for fans, but that would make it almost impossible for the players to transfer for spring semester if they cant even look until mid January.

Keye Thompson was granted a 7th season due to a medical hardship. I wonder if he will grad transfer or stay?
SEVENTH year....wow....he's a grown man already! He'll be 24 years old next season. I hope for his sake that he sets out to start a new chapter in his life. Can you imagine being 24 years old and still playing college football with a bunch of teenagers. Unless he accepts a P5 offer (and they would surely come), I'm hoping his days as a MAC player at 24 frickin' years old don't come to fruition.

When I was 24 years old I was paying off grad school loans as an entry level financial analyst making $40K a year with a $1K per month loan payment... I can promise you, playing football was better than that.

They get a 30 day window (undergrads) starting from Dec. 4th, if they play a late bowl game (beyond the 30 day window) they have 5 additional days, they get a 15 day window in the spring (after spring ball)

Grad students and walk ons can enter the portal whenever.

Playing football in the NFL or CFL at 24, F-yeah! Playing at a Power Five school at the age of 24, sure, okay. Playing in the MAC at 24, come on man.

I don't think that this is a real issue. People have played 7 years in the NCAA in the past and with the COVID year there have been a small smattering of players in their 8ty year in college accross various college sports. If he applied for a 7th year that probably means that he enjoys playing and wants another degree. If Ohio is the best place for that degree then I'd guess that he'll be far from the only 7th year football player in the G5, FCS, D2, D3 and NAIA combined. Heck, there have been a handful of people play college ball after getting out of the Army after they enlisted after high school.

Kyle McCord into the portal...

He probably wants to forget his time in this state ever existed, but I'd be stunned if he goes P5. Maybe someone like Tom Herman would bring him in or someone would bring him in as a back-up with a chance to push the starter.

If Rourke makes his decision, there are worse options.

Maybe Sammy has said good things to Egbuka, Marvin Harrison, etc when they were down here.
I would take McCord in a heartbeat.

Gabbert announced he’s coming back next year. That probably explains Smith moving on.

You may be right. However, his fiancé will be in Athens next year, so why change schools? If I were in his shoes I would rather go the CFL rather than another school. He's guaranteed a chance in the CFL and would make money in the process. The only reason to transfer to another school is to improve his chances of getting an NFL look. He may be able to do that by going to the CFL without as much risk.

I am curious as to how you would have designed a better system, one that listens to the athletes and the coaches.

Yep, because they want to be there for Spring Ball, and if they have to wait for the ever changing and later CFP to be finished and Bowl games they would struggle to go through the process and get enrolled, and then that is also why coaches wanted a 2nd period that runs after Spring Ball.

Are you certain his fiancé will be in Athens next year? She already said this is her last year of volleyball so perhaps she's graduating early. I don't know but why forego senior year of volleyball?

I'd guess that she knows he is opening himself for the NFL and CFL draft. She knows that she is probably moving to Canada in the spring.

Best case scenario is he has a shot at CFL. NFL is not remotely possible after this year. He clearly is not 100 percent and his numbers showed a regression.

I wasn't aware she was foregoing eligibility. That actually supports a move elsewhere. He's projected to go higher than his brother did in the CFL draft. Transferring doesn't make that much sense.
