Perplexing, to say the least. Of course, if P4 team came calling it would be one thing... But Charlotte?

The facts, however, are damning!

That's the part I don't understand. Was there a personality conflict between Cromer and Albin? Did she think Albin was a poor coach and she could find a better replacement? Did the Administration give her tight budget and coaching salary limit she was not allowed to exceed)? It's just strange not to reward a coach who just won the school's 1st conference championship in over 50 years.

I'm sorry, I don't buy this. If Tim was going to leave, he was going to leave. he knows our athletics financial situation. His contract already has bonuses for winning a title, winning a bowl and in lieu of total numbers, he basically had job security for life. An AD's job is to keep a winning football coach happy and we already run a department in the red. I think some of you "insiders" are just full of it.

Honestly, really don’t think I’m being bitter when I say this, but there are only 3 possible outcomes for his time at Charlotte:

- 1, he does amazing and in two to three years he’s gone for a P4 job that he probably could have landed from Ohio where this sustained success is more likely.

- 2, they hover around .500 his entire tenure there, they continue to have nobody care about the program, and he retires in 5-10 years with no fan bases loving him.

- 3, he does terribly and he’s taking a job at Kent State or an FCS school in 3-4 years

The reported circumstances of him leaving upset me, not that he left. Very weird that he left for barely more money at Charlotte though. He could have been in the Big 10 soon.

Taking a step back and zooming out sometimes helps. Coach Albin and the Solich tree have done a wonderful job changing the culture of OUr program.

Other programs from other conferences want that same feeling. Over the years, some folks have taken for granted the success we've had (missing out on championships but still winning bowl games). Winning on TV means a lot and we've had our fair share of great wins on the tube. It's no surprise we have other program's members on our messageboard ready to pounce.

We used to be that Kent State-like program wishing for winning seasons and bowl games. Hopefully, the culture that has been established remains with the next hire, especially culture building things like the "We 💚 Football" chants at the end of the game, etc. Special bonds are formed like that.

Athens is no Charlotte but from the sounds of their program, if he goes 4-1 in the first 5 games on their 2025 schedule, his name will be halfway on the field.

It's a tremendous opportunity to cement his legacy elsewhere while also having a slightly better Boise State "shot" at the CFP. And I have to say they have better weather and food too.

This new era of NIL is not only about players but also coaches who want to put themselves in the best position. We have to keep that in mind until the MAC demands more (if it ever does). We are an FCS coach's short-lived dream job and a better paying G5/P4 recruiting grounds.

My two cents

20 years is a looooooong time in Athens. I dont know much about the jump in programs but NIL has to be easier in Charlotte. I know i got antsy to visit CLE or CIN every 8-10 weeks as an undergrad.

NC is a big growth market for most companies. I cant imagine how much fun Coach will have exploring all the dining options not present in Athens Co.

Id gladly display a signed Albin football next to the current Solich ball in the man cave.

Im confident the new HC will be excited to coach at the MACs best school.

BTC is spot on with his comment above. She should have got this deal done six months ago before the season. As I have mentioned in several posts, the guy was the 6th highest paid coach in the league. If you do some checking the guy won as many league games as any coach in the MAC the last four seasons. What BTC said above is accurate and correct.

Although (as a St Edward grad) I would not want to lose him, Tom Lombardo at St Edward would be an outstanding choice.
St Ed's runs the same offense as OU (I realize many do) and he's won the Ohio D1 title in '15, '18, '21, '22 and '23. That's 5 D1 titles in 10 years.
He plays top competition accross the nation and knows the top programs and players accross Ohio.
The athletic Director at St Edward is Pete Kahler, son of longtime OU sports administrator Jim Kahler.
