I wouldn't say that the thought of changing coaches right before the season enthralled me. But given the circumstances of Solich's retirement I could have told you who our new coach was even if nobody had told me. Albin was the obvious hire. How could anyone have expected anything else?
He was in my mind at the time an Ohio guy and I really wanted to see him succeed and get a fair chance. I was pretty unhappy with the 3-9 start. The Duquesne loss was particularly disappointing. I never called for his head or anything close to that. It wasn't just that I wanted him to get a fair chance but it just isn't a thing I do. I wouldn't call for someone's job in any profession unless there are extreme circumstances. I do understand as a highly paid public figure there are different circumstances on a coach that trying to get a waitress fired or something like that. But even as an alum, a donor to OU, as booster, and season ticket holder I still don't think that I am either qualified or have the right to call for a coaches job.
There was a point when we were 1-2 and Fordham had about a 50/50 chance to beat us late in the game that I was at that point EXPECTING that he was not going to survive into 2023. If you had told me sitting in the stands that day wondering if we were going to take a second straight FCS loss what OUr record is since then I would have been absolutely stunned. That turnaround and recovering this years portal losses are pretty stunning. Really, it makes it more disappointing in retrospect that we failed to win the MAC in 2023.
