BG's Matt Johnson announced he won't apply for medical redshirt after missing all of last season after being injured in the opener and will try his hand at the NFL. There's no guarantee he would have gotten it but the door is now wide open for Ohio to win the East next year. Had Johnson been able to return I think BG would have been the team to beat in the East again.

Roger Lewis (a guy we couldnt close the deal with) might also be considering a jump to the NFL.

That would be wise with his age and new coaching staff to deal with.

Check out Mr. Knapke who will step in for Johnson. Knapke is very good too.

Knapke is a good qb but hopefully next year Zigger Zumber's coaching carrousel finally has a negative impact on them.

He certainly didn't help his case last night. Dropped multiple balls that were right on the money. He had a great year but I think he'd be making a big mistake leaving now. He's not NFL ready yet.

I suppose in theory this does leave the door to the MAC East wide open. But there will be A LOT of competition. Akron's program may be ascending and Buffalo will be in Year 2 under Lance Leopold's program. Should be interesting.

Shouldn't we get Akron, Miami and BG at home next year?

Who do we get in the West? Does that Toledo game everybody always talks about finally happen?

Depends upon how well he is rated by the NFL. Players in his position may receive an NFL prediction on their draft position. If he were to be first or second round material, he would be well served to elect the draft. Also, we don't know how much of a student/athlete he is.

The quality of the qb will determine the quality of finish for the teams MAC East.

Our consistent tendency to let every opposition qb shine will be a problem, as usual.

Save for truly untalented guys or freshmen, it seems every qb we face has a pretty good day against us. As we are predictable, conservative on offense, so on defense.

Well, give me the list of average or better qb's who we've shut down over the last few years.

MAC East slate next year should be:
Home: BG, Kron, Buffalo
Away: Fiami, Can't

West should give us a road trip to Muncie, plus a road/home split between 2 more West teams. Toledo makes the most sense, followed by……EMU? Or CMU? Without looking it up, it seems like we have played CMU more than EMU the past decade.

I don't see how in the world Ohio isn't at Toledo next year. It's been since 2007 since OU has played in the Glass Bowl. Coming up on a decade now.

Quick reaction: Lewis has a better shot at sticking in the NFL than Johnson.

I can see Johnson being a 4-7 round pick by the Steelers. With all his injuries R'berger has maybe three good years left. Johnson's in the same mold and could fit right in there. Lewis might be a 1-5 round pick by a bunch of teams. Of course, if he would go to the Browns we'd never hear from him again.

I agree with that, just not right now. I do think in a couple years Lewis will be on a roster. Johnson, no so much. But for any Ohio fan, it goes without being saying that thank God that Johnson won't be at BG next year.

Lewis has all the tools and will be a high round pick. Talking to a couple scouts and he's one of the impressive talents in the nation.

Talked to Toledo's DC and said they knew Lewis ran poor routes and could only hurt them over the top. UT jammed him at the line and brought help over the top and completely took him out of the game. He said WMU's Corey Davis is better. Lewis runs very few routes underneath or on stretch plays and isn't much of a threat on bubble screens or quick out either. He relies way too much on his athleticism and hasn't become a complete route runner. But if you cover him man to man, he can run past you and usually can haul in a ball over his shoulder. But he dropped several of those in the bowl which hurt BG.

Okay. But would we have objected if he was catching all those balls for us despite his lack of fundamentals?

Not at all and neither would BG. But when guys leave college early there's a big difference between "being NFL ready" vs "going to be NFL ready." From everything I gather about Lewis, right now, he's the latter. I'd hate to see the young man leave too soon and regret it. Remember, he wouldn't be leaving as a collegiate junior, he's only a collegiate sophomore as he prepped a year before BG. He still had two years of eligibility remaining, not just one like nearly everyone else considering coming out has.

Roger Lewis announced he is leaving BG for the NFL. Also, Matt Johnson isn't applying for a medical redshirt. In short, no Matt Johnson, no Travis Greene, no Roger Lewis = no BG in the MACC in 2016. No way the Falcons 4-peat the East without those 3. Ohio's path to the East title and MAC Championship keeps getting easier and easier and OU hasn't had to do a single thing.

A question. Does not BG return an East winning QB from 2014 in Knapke? Coppet BG's #2 RB had 845 yards about 150 more than Ouellette's 692. Returning Deiter/Moore at WR had 166 receptions and 1,987 yards. BG graduates only one from their OL. From your post I get that you believe BG will be without winning talent next season. Far from it. You say Ohio will not have to do a single thing. I am much relieved since I thought Ohio had to replace; Wells, Layton, Bass, Jones, Carpenter, Powell, Lucas, McQueen, Heitzman, Tautuiaki, Johnson, Patterson and Purdum. BG should still be favored. JMHO.
