He was a low three-star QB out of high school. 247Sports actually rated him high 2 stars (79). He didn't have many offers. It's noted in his BYU profile that he was recruited by Ohio, Miami and Cincinnati. He saw a bit of action as a backup this past year as a freshman, most of it in a 70-7 blowout of Wagner. He also was forced into action in a close game against East Carolina and threw a pick that set up tying field goal before starter Tanner Mangum returned to lead the winning drive. But he was the backup as a true freshman (Would have been third string if not for the injury to Taysom Hill in the first game). Was 10-17 for 137 yards with 1 INT and rushed 16 times for 49 yards and TDs.
Rivals has him at two stars with BYU as his only offer. Ohio as interested, though, not offering.

Some seem to believe Beau Hoge from BYU is the QB we are after. Caught this from someone else tweeting Arkley and then found this message board. Hardly concrete but perhaps where there is smoke....

Correct me if I am wrong, but we can't really "go after" anyone on another team's roster unless they express interest in transferring, right? That said, the BYU HC has left for Va Tech which may be a motivating factor.

Correct, poor word choice by me. The player can seek a release to contact schools about transferring prior to actually announcing it. I assume that's what happened here.

FWIW, he's following Kenny Lucky, Elijah Ball, and Coach Isphording on Twitter.

Solich's comments in the press conference were interesting. Considering the situation is still in flux with the player not having made a decision, he seemed to give a decent amount of detail.

This message board poster makes it sound like he is transferring for sure and probably to Ohio based on talking to Beau's dad. It's also implied in the thread that they wanted him to change positions and he didn't want to.

This could be interesting. If in fact Hoge transfers to Ohio, we will have 2 new players whose fathers were in the NFL, both Merril Hoge and Tommy Tupa.

Unlike Walsh, Hoge would have to sit out a year. Correct?

I'm getting tired of seeing all these transfers. It makes Ohio look more and more like Akron. They're always loading up on transfers. I'd much rather see Ohio recruit, sign and develop its own players. Players who want to be a Bobcat, sign to be a Bobcat and develop as a Bobcat. I'm sure I'm in the minority here but I'm tired of guys coming here because it didn't work out elsewhere. Especially after just one season and they often were only a redshirt then anyway. As for a QB, look around the MAC, other teams have certainly done well with their own guys having a lot of success and even won championships in the process. BG, NIU, CMU, etc, they all did it multiple times. They had QB's they signed and developed, not ones who swooped in from other schools because they couldn't hack it, were gonna have to work to move up the depth chart, etc.

I agree that I want to see the coaches identify talent and out recruit other schools, sometimes you have to take them however you can get them. We have not been great at developing quarterback, we have been good and developing wideouts, linebackers and cornerbacks. If Hoge can play, bring it on.

It's been documented how much transferring has increased in basketball. I'd bet it's true in football also. It's not just Ohio. For example, Northern Illinois just got a transfer quarterback from Oregon State yesterday.

I think that's exactly right. And Solich made basically the same point in the press conference (albeit with a bit more positive spin). He said that we have more QBs on roster than most teams (I'm not sure if that's true, but whatever), and sometimes you get into a situation where if you have too many QBs, you don't see them develop as well and as fast as you would like, hence why we didn't get a high school QB with this class.

If we pick up a transfer QB, no matter who it is, that will be 6 QBs on the roster. Unless our QB coach is a wizard (and I don't think he is), how much development are you going to get in the sophomores and freshmen next year?

It would be one thing if we had a guy come in highly (and accurately) rated who could play from day one. But, that's rare, and besides our coaches seem to have taken the exact opposite path by targeting guys NOT highly rated that they intend to develop.

The vast majority of our incoming players are HS recruits. We have a handful of transfers, some graduate transfers... Hardly something to worry about IMO.

We've had some very successful players who chose to attend other colleges first. People transfer for a WIDE variety of reasons. I think it is silly to group all transfers into one mass-stereotype.

I'm not saying you're a wizard, but you saying that the wizard isn't a wizard probably makes you a wizard, if I've read my Cotton Mather correctly. And, boy oh boy, have I read my Cotton Mather good.

As stated above, the vast majority of players are 4 year players. Ohio typically only takes about 3 players a year from JUCO and transfers combined, which is far lower than many/most teams.

With the math the way it is, you can take a max of 25 players a year, and have 85 total on scholarship. If all players stayed for 5 years, and you took 25 a year, you'd have 125 players on scholarship. To get to 85/25, each player can only stay an average of 3.4 years. That is why you're always going to need to see a mix of 5 and 4 year players with 1 and 2 year players.

Ohio has been able to use it's excellent Sports Management program to attract 5th year players the last three years. I expect that to continue, at least unless the NCAA changes the rules.

I did this before on another thread a while ago, but other famous football fathers include:

Mickey Tettleton
Sugar Ray Leonard

I hope it is Beau Hoge. His dad seems to be a good judge of QBs.

Much better armstrength Hoge has, but Beau reminds me a lot of Tettleton when Tettleton wasn't hurt and was at his prime at OHIO.

Is it against NCAA bylaws to hold a reality show called "The Quarterback", where potential QB transfers try to win the attention of Frank Solich? Instead of a rose, he gives out playbooks.

If he cleans up Maty Mauk? I don't know anything about him other than his troubles and that he's a QB from Ohio. Just throwing another possible name in the mix.

Either one would work.

Beau seems like the better fit.

We are losing a good WR in Robbie Walker who is transferring...probably saw limited time coming with returnees and newbies.
