I still find it absurd! And everyone who can afford this will do this because it's the Keeping up with the Jones' mentality that is wrecking college athletics especially for schools like us.

I agree. If allowed, this will spread, and will become the norm. Ohio has a hard enough time recruiting those 3-star athletes against P5 teams, but currently Ohio manages to get a few kids a year to turn down P5 offers and choose Ohio instead.

As this, and other things like it, spread, having a kid choose Ohio over a P5 team will become increasingly rare....so...eventually Ohio, and other G5 teams will have to find a way to match it, or come close. That seems to be the way things are going. The P5 teams add things, and then G5 teams find that their expenses go up, too.

You guys do realize that nearly every school in every other sport does something like this right???....College baseball teams from the north spend a week or two a year in Florida, California, etc...College Basketball teams spend a couple of weeks every few years in Europe, college softball teams spend a couple weeks a year in Florida/on the left coast, College gymnastics teams, swim teams all do the same......what makes football so undeserving of such a bonding experience in your eyes????????

I assumed this was intended to be an annual thing. Maybe not.

Maybe Ohio and other G5 schools will decide that for the same money (maybe less), it's better to have the team spend a week of spring camp in FL versus going to a bowl game in Idaho or Birmingham to play for a house of hundreds and a rapt "national" TV audience of 200 to 300 thousand.

Of course, then the conference that arranges those losing TV tie-ins will have to step in and force participation or else (what)?

Remember Brady Hoke's first season? Michigan was "back" then too.

I think Harbaugh's recruiting has outpaced Hoke's first year by quite a bit.

I laughed too. They lost to their rival 42-13 at home this year. They ain't back yet.

Except one minor difference.....Harbaugh is a proven commodity. The guy has won at virtually every level and took over a 1-11 Stanford squad and by year (4), team is 12-1 and Orange Bowl champions......He took over an NFL franchise that had been abysmal for years and has them playing for an NFC title out of the gate.....to even attempt to equate Hoke and Harbaugh is just so far beyond ignorance.....Whether you hate Michigan or could care less about Michigan or pay absolutely no attention to Michigan, if you believe for one minute that Harbaugh hasn't already made an immediate impact (from 5-7 to 10-3 is pretty dramatic with a mediocre inherited roster)...then you are simply a fool who really shouldn't discuss the topic of football at all as your ignorance on the subject reigns supreme.

Against an opponent that has been a PROVEN cheater for years with an SEC coach who knows no different way? Uhmm....you think o$u didn't have a bit of a head start with their on roster talent?....Not to mention by the time that game rolled around Michigan was physically beat up and without (3) key defensive players.....You are kidding yourself if you believe that one game scenario is any kind of indictment on whether Harbaugh has brought Michigan back or not......41-7 over the SEC's Runner-up in the Bowl game kind of showed that.

An SEC runner up that completely fell apart down the stretch and was no threat to throw the ball because their star QB was found using steroids. Florida was completely exposed once Grier was gone.

There's a difference between being good enough to compete and being "back." Right now they're competing. How about winning a Big Ten Championship? They haven't done that since 2004. That's more than a DECADE ago.

I have no doubt that Harbaugh will bring them back to a higher level, but I want to see them win big games first.

Old, Harbaugh had to get greedy and ruin it for everyone. No prospect camps around OHIO and no working the camps of other schools.

If I understand that rule change, it will hurt Ohio disproportionately far more than most other schools. One of the biggest sources of players has been players that showed up at Ohio's satellite camps. Ohio has done a great job of setting up camps, and using then to identify and sign talented players, such Wells. The effect won't be felt for about four to five years, but this is going to make things much more difficult down the road for whatever coach follows Solich.

the past 4 years I've been blown away by the time my nephews had to commit to an ivy league program during family weekends, before and after game. We had precious little time with them over 3 days.

In 1990 I lived in dorm with 4 senior Bobcat football players in my wing. I had tons of time with them all year, must hAve been oblivious to their time commitments. They graciously befriended a scrawny, underclassman suburban kid as a real friend. Makes a fella proud to be a Bobcat. I was in awe of their social status and kindness.

Hurts even more that Ohio coaches can't attend the monstrous camps held by other schools. 1000 kids in Columbus every summer.

As I stated in the original post, this was a "new" level of absurdity. No, us reaching out to the corners of OHIO was not absurd, and we were one of the first to utilize these camps, but Harbaugh took this to a new level, and the Spring practice was the final straw. Was just a matter of time before they whacked this down, and unfortunately many will pay.

Reaching to the corners of the state isn't absurd but reaching to the corners on the country is? That seems mighty small-minded to me.

Every college out there seems to brag about their "diversity" in having students from 47 states and 120 countries. Pretty sure Ohio does that. Pretty sure everyone does that.

Why is football held to a different standard?

Well, you should be pleased with the new rule, then, as it makes no distinctions between the state and the country. Schools located in strong recruiting areas will benefit from this, because kids will some to their camps, while schools not in good recruiting areas will get less good players to their camps.

You're only considering half of what I stated. You're correct in that I don't believe there should be any distinction made between recruiting across the state or across the country. Heck, or across the world. The second part is that I don't believe there should be any of these new regulations on it... If you want to have a camp in Timbuktu, so be it. Go right ahead. Don't really care if Billy or anybody else finds it offensive.

Schools are free to reach out to the corners of the country while they recruit.

Other sports make trips either as part of the regular season or to get the teams a taste of real competition. Harbaugh took his team to Florida JUST TO PRACTICE. Sounds like he wanted some sun and surf and found a way to get it without paying for it. It's a boondoggle.

That's what I don't get......why go after camps and leave the spring break practices alone? If you are concerned about academic integrity, cross country trips for current student athletes seems like the bigger deal.

Oh but I forgot, this is the NCAA we are talking about....

They went after this spring break practice as well. This will also be prohibited. You could see this coming almost as soon as he announced this was going to happen, and I posted the thread. And note, some conferences had already outlawed this practice.

Yes, BTC nailed this one before the ink was dry on the Michigan spring training contract. Good job! It was absurd and you called it like it was. Don't always agree with you, but you do calls 'em as you sees 'em. And, this time your vision was 20/20. ;-)
