I feel like Smith is both the safe pick and the right pick. Sure, if we were losers or just had a mid season, let's go outside and find someone new. But we just dominated the MAC championship and I know we're going to win on Friday. Have some pride in this staff having that accomplishment. Everything I've seen of Smith speaking to media passes the vibe check. Totally believe in him as a football leader. Promote him and I'm confident our portal losses are kept to a reasonable minimum. Combine that with retaining Navarro, I would feel as confident as possible with three P4 opponents next season. Maybe we pick off one or two. Maybe we have a decent showing in Columbus. Go with McCullough and we're risking a complete rebuild.

It doesn't matter what pick is safe. The rumors claim that McCullough is the guy, and that the announcement will be made in the next 24 hours or so. That's what I'm expecting.

Somehow, there are things that just don't add up to me. For example, who released the news of Albin's hire, and why was the release timed for exactly when Albin was on the bus? Could it have been released then to turn both players and fans against Albin, with the hopes that ill will would extend to the rest of the coaching staff as well, preparing for an outsider to replace them?

No. That's complete BS. The first report came in here at 6 pm, two hours before Thamel. The Ip trace is very close to Charlotte. This person registered with an email that, upon a search, ties it in with another AAC program.

It came during the bus ride because Charlotte was losing players left and right and needed to get the info out as soon as possible. The SEC champ game was on and they wanted it on the crawl. The AD even said they agreed to hold off until “after the game.” its literally in the press conference.

Which rumors claim he's the guy? This doesn't say that: https://footballscoop.com/news/update-on-ohio-coaching-se...

You talking about Bobcat Love? Because Petrino was "very much in play" a couple of days ago, and he's not even referenced in the link.

Thanks for that information. That makes me feel better about it.

Yes, I was. This post goes far beyond saying that McCullough is "in play".

I am not 100% sure but my sources lead me to believe it has been offered to McCullough as of this past weekend. Again, I am not 100% sure but the bread crumb trail from people I trust says it’s his to turn down.
I have no inside knowledge that allows me to assess the accuracy of it. I often disagree with BL, but I don't discount him when it comes to rumors.

I'm glad they talked to McCullough and considered options. I am sure McCullough will get his chance very soon.

I would have been proud to have had McCullough as our coach. Wrong time, though. Hopefully he can find a way to move up tocoordinator/HC. I also am not sure guys from places like ND are equipped to handle things as they are currently in the MAC.

My source was solid. What scares me is that he may have turned us down.

That does not bode well for Ohio in the big picture.

I'm sure he would have handled the transition better than former Notre Dame assistant Rob Ianello, who made an error in his first gameday decision at Akron, resulting in the Zips kicking off to begin both halves. It didn't get any better over the next five years.

If he turned it down, the news will leak any day now. Any agent worth sh*t would leak that about their client to illustrate 1) demand and 2) the type of job McCullough is aiming to get.

But my guess is he didn't turn it down. Seems like OU ran a pretty tight process and likely had a strong preference towards Smith from the jump.

This decision was made 10 days out from Albin leaving. It's very hard to coordinate a thorough interview process for outside candidates in such a short window (especially a candidate with a job and playoff games upcoming), and it seems pretty unlikely that we squeezed multiple interviews/reference checks/background check and an offer negotiation into a week, and then were able to offer to Smith instead.

Chances are, Cromer noticed that Albin's dog was getting sick a long time back and started having hypothetical conversations about Smith with people in the program and Smith himself about succession.

Not necessarily. Perhaps he didn't like the Appalachian setting, and wouldn't have been a good fit? Perhaps his price tag was richer than the salary norms in the MAC? Either way, Ohio football appears in good hands, and should continue to have winning seasons for years to come.

When one considers that the AD had a hand in building this highly effective coaching staff, it’s not surprising to see Smith as her new head coach. I think she gave Smith the opportunity to win the job. His poised, confident demeanor, smooth extemporaneous speaking style, and a team united behind him certainly helped win him the job. Putting him in a position to win was brilliant. I’m impressed.

It's an absolute certainty that a few folks here will start crafting a narrative that insists Cromer doesn't deserve credit for this hire.

“may have” “could have” “think he might have”. one can say anything in order to support a broader ideation. for what it’s worth if he did interview his agent (if he’s any good) will be releasing a statement that puts a positive spin for his client regardless of what might be true (it’s what agents do). “there was interest but we couldn’t come to a mutual agreement. Deland is excited to be part of ND’s druve to a national championship etc etc etc.” - I can read into that that he was never offered the job. someone else can read that he wanted too much money. someone else can read that he didn’t want to come to a perceived garbage fire of ohio football or the MAC.

reality is we got our coach, he was right here all along and the players are excited to play for him.

As I recall RichRod did the same thing in his first game at West Virginia. Versus Ohio.

We can speculate all we want. If McCollough did turn it down, his loss is our gain. But we can be sure of one fact. These jobs don't grow on trees.

Urban Meyer has told the story about leaving an assistant's job at Notre Dame for the HC position at BG, which at that point was nowhere near the opportunity that the job in Athens presents. He talked to former Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz about it. After saying the situation at BG didn't look very promising, Holtz almost exploded. "Of COURSE it's not a great job! If it was, they wouldn't be offering it to you." Meyer took the job.

John Groce wasn't sure about the Bobcat basketball HC position, and needed some persuasion from Thad Matta: "Why not? Why WOULDN'T you take it?"

Every HC job has its drawbacks, but the Ohio position, this year, had to be one of the better ones on the mid major landscape. If it were offered, and I was looking for a promising HC job, there would have had to be a whole bunch of negatives before I turned it down.

Again, if it were me and I was looking for a promising HC job, I'd recognize that those 3 items probably would be issues at most mid majors. And they sure didn't appear to be problems for Smith. As far as McCollough, most likely we'll never know for certain what really happened.

I believe that he has wanted to get away from the "blue-collar" approach to winning that Solich and Albin have used, in favor of a splashier approach. In particular, my guess is that he'd like to see a lot more NIL money, to bring in 3-4 star athletes, and a switch to more of a pro-style offense. He can speak for himself, though, and I could be wrong about what he wants.
