Again, where are you getting this information? This is the second "in play" post you've made about a possible new coach. Are your sources saying that Brian Smith is "not in play"? If so, I predict we are headed for a train wreck!

I am not 100% sure but my sources lead me to believe it has been offered to McCullough as of this past weekend. Again, I am not 100% sure but the bread crumb trail from people I trust says it’s his to turn down.

Really hope it’s Smith. I really don’t want to find an outsider. I don’t want to start over.

That would be interesting. Tim may be able to start with a full staff, and can probably fill most of his roster spots, too.

Tim just hired the director of operations from ECU. OU grad too.

Someone explain to her that the McCollough hire would be interesting if the program was struggling and had mass exodus after the season. It’s the opposite. She already botched this enough. Hire Smith or Hauser and let them continue the healing from the Albin situation.

Technically he was let go from ECU, but yes.

McCullough seems like he could be a great hire. Seems like a great leader and coach. It is nice to know we have interest from several good candidates internal and external.

The timing of all this with the bowl Friday is so awkward. Even if we go internal, with both Smith & Hauser interested it is still awkward to declare it before the game and leave 1 of the 2 disappointed. And with ND also playing Friday, I have to imagine McCullough doesn't want any official movement before then. For those reasons I have to imagine all parties are content with waiting until Saturday for any final decisions.

Call me crazy but it would have been ideal to announce tomorrow, introduce someone at tomorrow's basketball game, and get them started on the recruiting / portal trail ASAP? If it's Deland, he could easily leave the ND RB's for 24 hours to tend to our announcement. Marcus Freeman is paid enough to cover for him for 1-2 days. I feel like we are already way behind.

Lets hope no ones dog has to go to the hospital on Thursday.

If it's Brian - and it should be - announce Friday before the game. That will light a huge fire under them. Imagine that excitement.

I mean just look at what is happening - absolutely nothing. They lose their head coach and not one person has said - I'm going with you coach. You're my guy. I'm following you. None. Not even one. Not one 3rd string guy. No one.

That is so bizarre. And I can't wait until someone unpacks it after the season.

Like Shay Taylor wrote on twitter... It's a testament to THIS coaching staff. They're playing for eachother and it's a beautiful thing. Don't f*ck this up by brining in someone else.

Don’t be naive and think we don't have players entertaining offers and that they will come back en masse if we hire Smith. We are going to lose some. Some will hurt. This is about finishing THIS season right. They all know they have eight days after the bowl to hit the portal.

Besides, if it is Smith, what about the players who want Hauser? Does the defense pack up and leave?

I wonder if JC speaks to any players during this process?

We are all just speculating that these guys are playing for each other and still believe there is business to take care of to close this season out as one of, if not, the best season in modern history for this school.

Makes a lot of sense from the outside looking in, I'm curious if its true and if JC would even care about that.

I see Deland has a Junior son playing at Oklahoma and a Freshman son playing at Louisville. Obviously did not follow him to Notre Dame but wonder if it'd be different as a head coach.

Not if he stays on as well. I presumed he would follow Tim, and maybe that would lead to a lot of the defense following, but no one followed Spense to Memphis despite mass-portal jumpers. Maybe Hauser sees another strong season and a stout defense could lead to his next role, where UNCC will be rebuilding and may have some rocky seasons to start. That could set you back. That has been my thinking all along with the assistants, some will definitely leave, but I think some of the guys who have put in time like being at the top and see that resume as a way to move into something else like Spense did.

With that said, I'd take Spense over Hauser. I'm surprised his name was floated by that one single article.

You are right, players are committing out of transfer portal left and right already and we don't have anyone out there doing that work. This whole thing and what it does to bowl season is just sad.

It's admirable, but I don't understand it. When they are bouncing their grandkids on their knee...."Sonny, the year the we won the MAC Championship, I stayed around for an extra 2 weeks to beat Jacksonville State in the CURE Bowl without their Coach, Starting Corner, Starting Edge, Starting Wide Receiver, and 8 other guys who entered the portal." - If the MAC and Gonzalez/Cromer had gotten us a real opponent, I could 100% get behind the theme and authenticity of all this. But, to try and manufacture a narrative for a depleted Jacksonville State team? Pass.

I believe he left the Chiefs and went to IU so he could coach his oldest son, so it’s something he's done in the past. That son is now on the ND staff.

The son at Oklahoma is in the portal FWIW.

I have no information regarding who of these candidates will be our next coach, but say it is McCullough.

That would be kind of rare, a HC in the same conference against his Alma Mater.

Can only think of a few off the top of my head. Obviously Bear Bryant, but then…Nick Saban (Kent State/Toledo) Gary Pinkel (Kent St/Toledo), Dan McCarney (Iowa St/Iowa), Spurrier (South Carolina/Florida), Will Muschamp (South Carolina/Georgia), Pat Dye (Auburn/Georgia). Not a lot. Usually works out.

I feel like Smith is both the safe pick and the right pick. Sure, if we were losers or just had a mid season, let's go outside and find someone new. But we just dominated the MAC championship and I know we're going to win on Friday. Have some pride in this staff having that accomplishment. Everything I've seen of Smith speaking to media passes the vibe check. Totally believe in him as a football leader. Promote him and I'm confident our portal losses are kept to a reasonable minimum. Combine that with retaining Navarro, I would feel as confident as possible with three P4 opponents next season. Maybe we pick off one or two. Maybe we have a decent showing in Columbus. Go with McCullough and we're risking a complete rebuild.
