No doubt about it. There's such reverence for his talent and maturity and growth...that the article out of camp has him as not one of the first two backs, not one of the guys who'll be on the field in two back sets.

Prediction: After his eligibility is gone, this staff will consider giving him the ball.
They say that if you repeat something often enough, people will start believing it, even if it isn't true. It does get a little harder, though, when the actual Post article says:
The Bobcats have an abundance of running backs in the backfield, with all running backs figuring to see significant snaps and touches next season.

I know that giving all the backs some carries and seeing who does the best seems like a radical idea to you, but it's how this staff does things.

I know. The Oakland A's and the NY Yankees had fine outfielders--so they limited Mr. October's cuts so that all the fine players would get a chance.

The thought of playing the best guy most of the time is not good policy.

In other news, Stephen Curry lauded the Warriors deep bench and stated that he understands Steve Kerr's new decision that he'll probably only see 8-10 minutes a game from now on. In fact, he wondered how he even saw the court so much in real games over the past few years given the depth of quality of his teammates, some of whom may have been on the team longer than he has.

The failure to see basic truths, the lack of M.O. on this board....

...will doubtless be followed by 'i told you so..coach was right to hold him back until now....' should Irons prove out.

'cause no matter what this staff does, it's proven to be superior, proven worthy of our reverence.

I look for both Irons and Brown to be much improved this fall. OUellette has already proved he can play. The three of them all have the potential to be among the finest backs Ohio has had to date. Of course they are all going to play. White is also going to play, but in a different role. He's an exciting player, a playmaker, and they will find a way to get him the ball in space.

I guess I didn't see running back play as a problem last year. Not sure how many games people think the running backs cost this team last year. I hope Irons can be a 1,000-yard rusher next year. In the meantime, I'll feel comfortable there are four guys at that position that can get it done.

And baseball and basketball are each perfectly analogous to college football. Run 'em every down. But wait, wasn't that known as BUTM? That wasn't right, either, as I recall. I am so confused.

Once he completes his transfer to USC, sits out a year, he'll be an every down workhorse back there.

Come on, guys, where are the transfer rumors? As everyone knows, things posted on this board don't have to be true. The purpose here is to be entertaining, isn't it? This thread is a perfect example to these two cardinal BA principles. I've had more than one laugh reading what's been said here. In only one or two cases did the poster actually intended to be humorous. Keep up the good work! ;-)

Got a chance to talk Football with one of the Assts and his observation of Irons went like this. "Beast" "Only reason he is here is because he is from Canada" "A slightly slower version of Adrian Peterson" "A Big Ten type RB in the MAC" "We have to get him involved" "AJ is a coaches dream ultimate team player and hardest worker" .....interesting conversation but its pretty much what most of us had assumed.

For the umpteenth time .. it's MORE than athletic ability. What don't you understand? Do you understand that a kid may not be 'mature' as a 17 or 18 year old freshman? Do you comprehend that it may take time to mature? Geez .... and I even sent you PM's this past year as to why he didn't see more time on the field. You're hopeless ... I'm done replying to your idiotice comments. Do you get paid by someone for each post? Nothing else would make sense given the quantity and quality (or lack thereof) of each post.

for the umpteenth time, stop making excuses, play the best players. Be done with getting emotionally attached and believing that players should start for the rest of their life because you like them.

Its a different game these days too. 12 game regular season schedule and bowls in most years. The speed the game is played at takes a toll. Packages on both sides of the ball are more complicated. Wanting your favorite guy to be on the field every snap is a disservice to how the game is played today.

Whoa, talk about the pot calling the kettle black.... players should not necessarily start just because you like them. There is ample reason to believe that Irons was not ready to play a bigger role last year. The good news is that are reasons to believe he has benefited a great deal from the last year, and that he will be ready to play a bigger role this year. Had he been simply handed the position on a silver platter, would he have grown as much? Would he have worked as hard, and been a super-iron Bobcat?

Is this the same source that has Maxwell being the next Big Ben? I get it that Maxwell and Irons are Big Ben and Adrian Peterson and need to get involved. Next question, what do these two still need to do in order to turn that potential into on the field results? Believe me I would love to see it. Right now, per Albin, they are installing, so he who is paying attention in the meetings is ahead. Right now White is Mr. Explosive, Ouellette is 30 for 140 vs NIU and has TV commentators gaga over him with his football instincts, blocking and receiving. Next chance you have to talk to coach Albin please ask him what Maxwell and Irons still need to do to realize their potential.

30 carries 140 is less than 5 yards per carry, nothing to go gaga over, but if you say so. AJ is a good or great back, unfortunately, he may not be the best back that we have. White is Mr. Explosive, Irons is everything powerful explosive and fast. As far as Big ben, I have not seen him play.

30 for 140 is 4.7 per carry. On the season NIU allowed 4.0 per carry. So I can give a lot of respect for that 4.7. It is much like McReae's 31 for 136 vs Akron in 206's pivotal game. You will disrespect it as you please. The record will forever reflect A.J. to be the Bobcat's leading rusher the past two seasons.

IF YOU START AND END WITH THE CONCLUSIONS THAT THE COACHING AND COACHES' DECISIONS ARE INFALLIBLE, THEN YOU ARE IMMOBILE AND THERE'S NO ROOM FOR DISCUSSION AT ALL.

HOWEVER, IF YOU FIRST JUDGE THE COACHING STAFF'S 11 YEARS OF RECORD, THEN YOU MIGHT NOT START AND END WITH THE CONCLUSION THAT THE COACHING AND COACHES' DECISION ARE INFALLIBLE. AND THERE MAY BE ROOM FOR DISCUSSION.

AND, YES, I AM YELLING.

Well, of course, that was AJ against the NIU first team defense, not some garbage time play against the 2d or third team defense in the late minutes of a game. Since this is a thread about Maleek, let's look at how his carries stack up against first team defenses. When we do, we find that it is less than AJ's average, so if AJ's numbers aren't something to go gaga over, neither are Maleek's.

Going back to the play by play, I find that his carries that were not late in the fourth quarter were:
Idaho: none (had 2 carries late, after the game was decided for 21 yards)
Marshall: none
SELA: none
Minn: none
Akron: none
Miami: 11-49 (3,5,2,2,15,5,3,9,4,0,1)
WMU: none (4 late carries for 19 yards)
BG: 2-3 (1,2) (plus 2 late carries for 55 yards)
Buffalo: 4-7 (1,4,1,1)
Kent: none (4 late carries for 22 yards)
Ball St: 5-32 (10,2,14,0,6)

So, in carries against first team defenses, he had 22 carries for 91 yards, an average of 4.1 yards a carry. His best games were Miami and Ball State, two teams that were certainly not as good as NIU.

His distribution of carries in contested games was as follows:
0 Yards - 2 times
1 yard - 5 times
2 yards - 4 times
3 yards - 2 times
4 yards - 2 times
5 yards - 2 times
6 yards - 1 time
9 yards - 1 time
10 yards - 1 time
14 yards - 1 time
15 yards - 1 time

Fully half of all plays went for less than 3 yards. That is a concern because you aren't going to sustain drives when you have runs for less than 3 yards, and those short runs are going to put you into passing situations.

He has a lot of potential, but it is still raw. Against 2d or 3rd string players he was able to romp for some big yardage, including a long TD runs against Idaho and BG. Against first team defenses he needs to get better at using his size to get positive yardage, and get more carries to be 3 yards and up.

The place AJ does better, in my opinion, is that he does an excellent job of churning out drive sustaining runs against first string defenses. Those 4-7 yard carries are what successful drives are built on.

I look for big improvement in Maleek's play this year. I don't think it's fair to leave Dorian Brown out of the conversation, either - he's also an outstanding back with outstanding potential.

This debate is futile. I have stated this before but if Irons was given the same opportunities as the other backs this entire thread would end with a final "I told you so" he is hands down the most dynamic talented RB on the roster and only needs carries to prove it. What does it mean when a coach refers to him as AP? High praise! When the Mac Awards are handed out this year, and if Irons is given a true shot at being a feature back the league will recognize a break out year...And I will simply say I knew it all along. I read articles about how Ohio returns a talented crop of backs and that may be true but when the depth chart is upside down it just doesn't really matter. Is Papi an every down back? Not a chance. Would AJ be better suited as a blocking full back for Irons. Yes yes he would. But for now and until the coaches play talent the debate will continue to rage on.

Every excuse, he is raw, he may not be able to pass protect or he may not be engaged. He got the Bobcat award and he is a man-child with the rock. Most of you know that if he got the same opportunities, he would put up better numbers, lets cut the act.

Certainly it's true that he has to block. If he can't, the QB is going to be killed on blitzes, and it would be a short, ugly season.

It's also true that as he develops, he will get more carries. All the backs are going to get carries this year, so he'll have ample opportunity to continue to improve and earn more time. I fully believe he can earn the starting job by the end of the year, but I also think it's very clear that he hasn't earned it yet. A few nice carries against the other team's third string aren't enough to win a starting job. On the other hand, it's also very clear from how he was used last year that the coaches believe he has the potential to be great. There is no way they would have worked so hard to get him carries in situations where the game was still on the line if they didn't believe in him.

Most of all I agree that having to have this debate over and over is silly. Let Irons play this year, and let him show how much he has improved. Let him earn the job, and let's stop having to debate whether the job should just be gifted to him. The fact is that if he wants the starting job, he'll have to earn it, and he has the potential to do it.
