What does TX State try to do?
Uh, they're from Texas. They drill for oil and shoot people.
And probably have a bunch of good Texas players. How bad can they be?
Purely guessing here but they probably get who is left over after these schools:

Texas
Texas A&M
Oklahoma
TCU
Oklahoma State
Texas Tech
Baylor
Houston
SMU
Rice
North Texas

I would take it. They had 8 3 star recruits this year.

Here's what to maybe expect from TXST based on what the new coaching staff did at JMU last year.

Head coach Everett Withers (former Ohio State co-defensive coordinator) will want to play fast. At JMU, his offense averaged nearly 80 plays and 530 yards a game last year (including 729 yards against SMU). I don't know a lot about TXST, but I'd be willing to guess that even at the FCS level JMU had better skill position players, including former Georgia Tech QB Vad Lee.

Defensively JMU struggled in both his seasons even after replacing most of the defensive staff after his first season. His defenses struggled his final year at Ohio State as well. I would not expect a huge turnaround for his new team that was 123rd in FBS last season.

In summary, I predict the Bobcats will score more points than the Bobcats.

Is this a blackout game? I saw a picture of the graffiti wall today that is promoting the game. Painted on the wall is #bobcatblackout.

Yeah let's waste that on THIS game. Great idea.

Or, might be fun to have it on a game with a full stadium.

Yep, absolutely stupid to be dressed in all black in August for a 3:00pm game when you don't have to. Have to love non-football people making decisions.

I actually wonder if those who painted the wall got it wrong. I've seen no mention of it being a blackout game anywhere else.

Hello fellow Bobcats.

I've been a fan of the Ohio Bobcats for a long time, from a distance, since we share the same mascot and we compete for attention with a large monolithic university that sucks the air out of any significant wins or splash made by our teams. (UT-Austin and Ohio State respectively)

So, I always pull for your team...except this time!

I've been looking forward to this game between my Bobcats and you guys ever since they announced it BUT our team has run into a few roadblocks. I hate to say it but I think your Bobcats are going to beat my Bobcats pretty handily.

I noticed a few trivia type questions in various posts and thought I'd answer.

Yes, when Necessary Roughness was made there was not a "Texas State".
Yes, Texas State/Southwest Texas State is the alma-mater of LBJ. Class of 1930.

The team...
3-9 last season and 7-5 for two straight season previous.
Last year was supposed to be a break-out year but quickly turned into a nightmare. I watched the team body language go from excitement to melt-down as the season progressed. Alumni and fans, myself included, complained very loudly about the lack of progress. Coach Fran unceremoniously retired and we hired the new coach after a roughly three-week search. The recruitment season suffered and many players have either been dismissed or quit. This is almost a completely new squad. I read that we will take the field with 71 scholarship players.

Offense:
We have a really exciting QB who uses feet very well and is a scoring threat either on the ground or passing. He is also exciting when he fumbles or throws an interception. Porous pass defense last season caused him to rush his passes, scramble, and/or take many sacks. It was brutal at times.

After the QB we are really thin on the O-Line (thus the scrambling) but have serviceable backs and tight-ends. The receivers are completely new with no one having a college catch. I suspect we will run the ball a-lot against you guys for this reason.

We averaged 70+ snaps per game and they have a goal of increasing that tempo this season. We'll see how that goes.

Defense:
Our defense last season was the worst defensive squad I think I've seen at any level of play...and certainly the worst Bobcat defense ever. The Def. Coordinator resigned after game 3 and things went downhill from there.

D-line is undersized and inexperienced. We have a good pass rushing DE with good size and agility. We have one D-lineman who is a beast even though he lists at 5-11/275.

Linebackers are new and untested.
Corners and Safety have some experience but I don't have confidence in a team that ranked at the very bottom of FBS in pass defense. Fact is, we would regularly get lit-up by the opponents pass game.

Verdict:
Again, I think Ohio U. is a team on the way up. Our team is simply trying to find out who they are. I think this will be a good warm-up victory for your team.

I suspect that we might win 3 or 4 games this year but I believe that Coach Withers is a winner. He's going to make our team into a winner too...

Let's look forward to the return trip for your team to San Marcos in 2020. Maybe that one will be more interesting.

Cheers.

I'm kinda curious as to why things just completely fell apart after Game 3 of last season to be honest. The season was still VERY young and you guys had nothing to be ashamed of losing to Florida State at their place. Hell you scored 16 points which is a pretty darn good day all things considered. Lord knows our Bobcats have been worse in similar situations.

You beat Prarie View handily and then you had a tough loss to a better and damn good Southern Miss team 50-56.

It was probably all but decided you'd lose to Houston, so you start conference play at 1-3 which is what a lot of C-USA, MAC and Sun Belt teams do. Seems to me like people just lost faith after losing to Southern Miss, maybe not knowing how good Southern Miss really was.

I know I was expecting a decent or better year, like at least bowl eligibility for you guys last season, but man that stinks.

Guess you never saw the Steelers, Ravens or others play all their games in black or dark uniforms. 86 is like winter here in Columbia, we had 18 days in July with 100 degrees or higher and average high of 99.3 for the month. I run 5 days a week about 4-5 miles each time with the average being 84-90 degrees and I'm 63. If 86 is too hot maybe they need to take up water polo.

Again, the black out thing has completely run its course. OHIO is GREEN and WHITE and a whole group of freshman are going to have their first Bobcat experience NOT involve the school colors. Sometimes I wonder what the hell our athletic marketing folks are smoking, and whether it has been legalized for medicinal purposes yet. Colossal !@#$up. Colossal.

As I often have to say at work, things would be so much better if I were running the show.

Bobcat Blackout is officially dead, that was put on the wall by mistake. According to the official Bobcat Blackout twitter page as of August 19th #BobcatBlackout has been replaced by #BleedGreen.

To clarify, the Texas State game is #BobcatBlackout. While the t-shirt sale run by Sports Administration is no more (that's what they referenced in the tweet), it will remain a promotion on the schedule for years to come when the team wears their black jerseys.

The game was set as #BobcatBlackout with the expectation of this being a night home game. It was picked up by CBS Sports, moving it up to a 3:30 pm kickoff. Despite this, we kept it as #BobcatBlackout which had already been promoted/released.

Go Bobcats!

Hi all,

Here's some of my takes

Our DC was in his 2nd year and just walked away from the game (he has some sort of shop now "back home" NC or GA)
The D was taken over by our LB/ST coach (Baby Fran. The guys, apparently, didn't respond because nobody knew their assignments. We had some young/new players and it just didn't mesh. Jones's issue (and the RBs/WRs) was not a lack of talent, the OLine was experienced but just had a lot of injuries

I don't think it was a depression after Southern Miss. We beat them in 2013 at their place. We also beat UH in 2012. It was a combination of (it seemed) Fran didn't care, lack of depth, lack of discipline and (as a senior that graduated put it) too much time on the Square. (all the bars in downtown San Marcos)

For this year? Yes, we lost 27 seniors and now have lost about 25 (more) to attrition. (5th years graduated May and moved on, quit team, dismissed). We will not redshirt anyone and we have 47 walk-ons. Twenty of those walk-ons are going to be on the traveling team. Our total team is at 107 players but, as TXST said, only 75 are on scholarship (mainly due to said attrition). It's almost like we're starting back over at square 1 - like an FCS transitional team.

I'm optimistic that we'll see improvement as far as discipline and execution but I don't see this being a Bowl eligible season by a long shot. They could surprise us but I'm not laying all my eggs in any basket.

I look forward to watching our game vs Ohio. Please be gentle.
