Yes because the stadium doesn't meet present or future needs. The student section is only 6,300 seats counting where the band sits and 9,000 students is not uncommon on a Saturday. The restrooms and concessions are inadequate. The stadium is only a few thousand season tickets away from a season ticket sellout. A student side of 10,000 (3,000 bigger than current) with supports for an upper deck in the future is the way to go. By the time this could happen a deck with 5,000 more would likely be needed.

At least Peden was built, so 're-building' is an apposite concept.

The football team needs to be built (MACC). One doesn't rebuild from injuries--that concept don't hunt.

The Southeastern Ohio History Center is going to pull out all stops to prevent this from happening. I've worked on several projects in New Jersey which involved determining if it was physically/economically viable to renovate an existing "older" building.

The buildings I've worked on are not able to be classified "historic" because,as I suspect is the case with O.U.,they are either not old enough,or have been renovated over the years.

We always start out with the premise that a building,especially one with desirable architectural features,should be preserved.

Being "well built" (structurally sound) is only one factor that has to be looked at.
In fact sometimes a "well built" building creates its own problems.

I assume that New Jersey and Ohio have similar standards when it comes to renovating a building.
Namely that means it has to be "brought up" to current Code.
That means upgraded plumbing,fire suppression,electric,HVAC,insulation etc.

The building also has to comply fully with ADA requirements.

Normally,that means having to gut the building down to the outer walls,interior structural walls and floors,then starting over.

If the building has interior masonry walls,something that was common,it makes it quite sound,but running new utilities can be tough.

You also need to put in ADA compliant elevators,restrooms etc.

Odds are that you're also gonna have some asbestos to deal with.

As much as I love preserving older structures,its can be tough to justify the cost,especially for projects that use public funds.

In a way, that's kind of what I was thinking - allow for future growth by being prepared to go up by multiple levels, and start with two levels to begin with. The App State facility is pretty simple, yet has modern features and looks like it has room to expand if needed.


Regarding other concerns about code, etc., one of the biggest problems with a complete demolition is that there isn't somewhere else to play in the 2 years it would take to build a completely new facility. And there really isn't a lot of room to build a new on campus stadium. For that reason alone, I can't see that happening.

I thought this was a very interesting question....so I did a little research. Was interesting to see that not many coaches hang around the MAC for more than a decade....and those that do tend to win at least one MACC....your list:

Herb Deromedi (CMU)....he won 3 in 16 years
Bill Hess (OU)...won 4 in his first 11 years....but did not win one his last 9 years
Jim Harkema (EMU)...won 1 in 11 years
Bill Doolittle (WMU)...1 in 11 years
Gary Blackney (BG)...won 2 in 10 years
Paul Schudel (BSU)...won 2 in 10 years
Gary Pinkel (UT)...won 1 in his 10 years....played for 3 others in MACC
Al Molde (WMU)....won 1 in 10 years
Doyt Perry (BG)...won 5 in 10 years

Joe Novak resurrected NIU from a 1-10, 0-11 team his first two years into a MAC West contender in 6 of his last 7 years....he bottomed out his final year going 2-10. But he certainly laid the foundation for Husky success going forward, playing in 3 MACC games and 2 bowl games (before the era of EVERYONE WITH A PULSE GETS A BOWL!)....overall 47 MAC wins in 11 years (with three years in an unbalanced schedule where they only played 7 MAC games)

Frank Solich took a dormant program...maybe not as dormant as NIU....and built it into a MAC East contender just about every year...winning 3 MAC East titles...playing in 7 bowl games (in the EVERYONE GETS A BOWL GAME era)....overall 53 MAC wins in 11 years.

Trevor Rees (Kent)...zero in 13 years from 1951-1963
Frank Solich (OU)....zero in 11 years....played for 3 MACC
Joe Novak (NIU)....zero in 11 years...played for 3 MACC

Honorable Mention:
Lee Owens (Akron)...zero in 9 years
Don Nehlen (BG)....zero in 9 years

Bottom line is....Frank is treading into unchartered waters in the modern day MAC.....this would be 12 years without a MAC title....something no coach has "accomplished" in the modern era. Not exactly something for which they'll hang a banner at Peden.

BTW, re the buildings razed on College Green. I didn't mind see Ewing fall. It was an eyesore and its basement auditorium was a fire disaster waiting to happen. Boyd wasn't exactly an architectural gem. But I hated to see ivy-covered Tupper fall. I do hope Cutler, McGuffey and Wilson remain as the campus centerpiece.

Drove by the stadium today and noticed they are gone. I hope they figure out how to cover those spaces up quickly because it looks nasty. Speaking of Convo and paint........have the walkways on the plaza outside been repainted? I was last there for the CBI (or was it CIT) home game against Wright State a few years ago and you could have pulled up sheets of peeling paint from the walkways.

At least we were spared from this list of stadiums...although about 25% of it is made of MAC schools. We have played in many of them outside of the MAC in recent years, too.
