Brian Smith was available when Nick Rolovich was fired for not getting a COVID shot incidentally at the same time Tettleton left for the NFL. Maybe a common connection put them in touch, but Smith describes it on ohiobobcats.com as he and Albin “started talking” and found out they had a lot in common. I don't see how Cromer was involved in any way.

Slightly different situation, with Frank retiring abruptly in July, 2 months before the start of the season.
Timing is even tighter here given what's at stake. In July they had kids in the program and no portal. Today...

I like Smith and think he is ready.

However, we didn't bother to interview Urban Meyer when we hired Brian Knorr. Two years later, they put 72 on us. Consistency is great, but not without due diligence.

Interesting point but different scenario.

Grobe announced not only his departure but the departures of his entire coaching staff (except for Knorr). He hated Thomas Boeh (for good reason) and was determined to leave him next to nothing. I believe the whole staff already had offers from Wake.

Our current staff doesn't have offers from Charlotte? The difference here is the bowl game and fear of the portal.

If 7-4 Ohio in 2000 was today, we would have been in a bowl and Grobe would not have left his players behind with no coaches.

I guess my point is, does Smith have commitments from some staff or does he have to start from scratch? Can Smith “keep the culture” with an entirely new staff? What’s Frank’s opinion—he is a consultant, no? There are questions to be answered.

I think there are plenty of questions that will probably never be answered. How was this botched so badly? My issues are not with Coach Albin at all. I have to believe the biggest issues were caused by other decision makers.
A great way to fix this in a hurry would be making Smith or Hauser, who I think are both capable turn me down. And based on the handling of their predecessor maybe they will.
Keep the team together as much as possible, keep the recruiting class in tact as much as possible and keep the momentum going. This isn't Brian Knorr it's Brian Smith or John Hauser.

From what I have seen on this board, it sounds like the AD was not willing to make Albin an offer until and unless he won the MACC. That, apparently, was enough to push him to Charlotte. History sometimes repeats. I don't expect Smith to get an offer until and unless he wins the bowl.

How does the timeline work on that? We know (from this board) that he did receive an offer that matched Charlotte's, right?

And we also seem to know that he accepted the Charlotte job before the MACC game? Seems like those things are in conflict, unless Cromer made the offer after the game.

Is the culture more about the characteristics of the players? The top recruiting pitch (according to Albin) is academic support. The state is also full of tough kids making it easy to piece together a good team.

The question I think is more about executing a dynamic offense. The blueprint for 2025 is right there though with how the Cats performed in the second half of 2024 all televised. Back in the day in would be starting from scratch.

A way to stick it to TA is to retain as much of the existing staff as possible with raises to match or exceed anything Charlotte is offering.

I am sure Albin will try to sign some or all of his former coaches including Smith and Hauser. Ohio would make a solid gamble on Smith as HC and Hauser as DC and give Hauser one of those titles they give you when they want you to stick around and get more money. Hauser is reportedly an excellent recruiter and obviously can coach and call defense shutting down miami. I think if you keep Smith and Hauser you have the foundation.

You ain’t wrong there, but that was Tom Boeh making his mark and wanted to purely put his stamp on the program. He personally hired two coordinators and 2 other assistants. Hell the DC he hired didn’t even run the scheme that 1. Knorr knew and ran to success. 2. We had 10 returning starters to run.

Tim Kish. Nothing wrong with the guy other than he was a square peg. Had a long career after that fiasco.

If I had to guess, and I made this same post a few months ago when I was talking about Tulsa or Purdue...

Brian could/will likely keep Faanes, and Tremayne. DLo I think will stay unless he's offered a Co-DC or something. Would Tim offer Metz or Scott the OC role? I can see Metz getting a Co-OC title from Tim. He's young, he's a bit of an up and comer, but he's been here for a while and his wife is an OU alum. Brian could make him WR coach or something, and I think he stays on.

Tim will take a Hauser and a lot of the old guard.

I don't know what assistant salaries are like for UNCC, but from the outside looking in, is it that exciting of a prospect? I'm not so sure. Charlotte is an awesome city, but UNCC... you're fighting for a lot of power programs for dollars, and most of those dollars go to UNC. It's an uphill battle that I'm not so sure is worth the risk for a lot of younger guys.

Though on the flip side, if they're able to turn that team around... could be a easier slide into the ACC.

Well, Smith is about 50 times better speaking on the mic, although probably in front of three kids.

Said all the right things, even acknowledged how things went down wasn’t fair to the players.
