Please pleas no Dino Babers. We don’t need any recycled burnouts.

Let’s see how the bowl game goes. If Smith can get them to play the way they did in the Mac championship game. I would give it to him.

So you give him a 2 year contract that is to be evaluated? He does well, give him a lil raise and a rollover of ONE year if he wins 8 games? Let’s see how many folks jump at that deal.

I'd pick up the phone to talk to the Idaho guy just in case you don't like what you see of Smith in the next few weeks. There's some value in HC experience. I'd pass on Babers. There are lots of assistants you could consider if you go that direction.

I don’t know what kind of contract you would give him Billy. That’s on the administration and athletic department. I’m just saying, continuity and consistency in the culture might be beneficial. if they implode you’ve got to look around.

We were a different program back then. Frank was formerly a national headliner that didn't deserve to be fired. It was a hiring you couldn't pass up. Babers has a career losing record at the FBS level and we are now one of the top programs in the conference.

Considering where the team is now, they obvious choice would be to hire someone from outside, who can take the team to an entirely different level. The last thing you would want would be for Ohio to stay where they are now.

If we go outside the program, I would love Al Washington (Notre Dame DL Coach) has also worked at OSU, Michigan, and Cincinnati.

L.C. Got to disagree with you on this one. We are what we are. We’re not going to any different level than we are right now. Just not enough resources. Hire from within and keep some consistency.

I don't think it is that obvious of a choice because of Ohio's special situation that we had a coach here in some capacity since 2005 in Albin that always gave us some measure of continuity in the program until now that is worth trying to keep going. And this is our third 10 win season in a row with one game remaining and we just got a MAC Championship. So I think it remains to be seen whether we can't achieve an entirely different level by retaining as much of the current coaching staff as possible because we are consistently winning at a high level which can take the program further given time.

Hiring from the outside could possibly give us higher return in what can be achieved, but also more unknown factors would be involved so it would involve more risk.

I think we should hire Smith or Nowinsky, but I’ll bet Julie will go outside because she’ll want to make a hire that’ll be “her man.” She’ll not be looking for what is best for the program long-term, but what makes the biggest media splash and get her name in the headlines. I hope I’m wrong, but that’s my guess out here in land of Oz.

The last thing an AD would want to do is to have the program motor on, unchanged. It is typical for an AD to want to put their own mark on the program. The irony is that, to bring in the kind of person she will want to bring in, she'll have to give the new coach the kind of contract she refused to give to Albin, and perhaps a better deal than that. I mean, what big name would come to Ohio without a contract for some number of years, say five, and compensation in the upper half of the MAC?

She never considered doing that when Frank retired. She immediately hired Albin. She needs to do the same now...fast.

Slightly different situation, with Frank retiring abruptly in July, 2 months before the start of the season.

I am not saying that Tim Albin wasn't loved by his players because I know he absolutely was. But.....when we see OUr players thanking coaches when they graduate they always tend to post pictures of the guys who recruited them and their position coaches which is natural. But even in the day of Albin as a coordinator I didn't get the impression that he was at a "Burrow" type of level of love. With Smith I absolutely see the guys giving him that love. Same with guys like Izzy, Tremayne or Rudolph. Wait until the bowl game, see how Smith does, give him a 2-year and say that after two years he has to have us within this win-loss, MAC competition level. Then go get Tyler Tettleton as Offensive Coordinator and LFG!

I'll pass on Tyler Tettleton. Petulant ego maniac who took a job on Albin's first staff and then quickly bailed.

Timing is even tighter here given what's at stake. In July they had kids in the program and no portal. Today...

I’m usually 100% with you but I’m not seeing that that’s so obvious at all. Different level, that’s not going to happen with our lack of resources. Now if we even had Charolttes NIL (10 times ours)- that’s different ,

Right now we need to make a hire that helps us maintain our current level, not backslide. We're competing in the MAC, not AAC.

But you're not entirely off - AD's always want to make a SPLASH. A big jolt that increases a quick inflow of cash and excitement.

I've said it somewhere in these other threads, but if you remember when Brian was hired - I immediately thought Albin's clock was starting. He was brought in - by someone (Julie I suspect)- with zero ties to Ohio, or the mid-west. He's a califoria kid who wears leas in the booth, he was an offensive coordinator at Hawaii and Washington State... and ends up the RB Coach at Ohio University...?

Year 2... Associate Head Coach title

Year 3... Scott is demoted. Brian is the new OC.

Year 4...

I think it's been written for a bit. And maybe thats why Tim took an interesting exit.

I could be wrong - bc I do think she wants a splashy headline hire - but Brian is here for a reason, and I don't think it's because he loves coaching running backs.

And Spense would be an awesome hire. And also somewhat "splashy" bringing him back off a Top 25 team. Solid.

Agreed. Again, no clue where I said it, but OU has been so good because we've been remarkably stable. Someone replied to me and said thats how high school teams run. I disagree. That's how strong programs run. We build from the inside.

That's not to say I wouldn't take Ryan Day if he got fired, but if it comes to a random OL coach from somewhere else or two guys who have been in the builiding... gimme those guys. They know what to expect. As so do some of the players on the team. Consistency. Stablitiy. Win.

I mean, maybe, it's a small world... but where would they have ever crossed-paths? Albin is significantly older.

Albin was the OC at North Dakota State when Brian was with the Packers.

Then Brian went on his west coast coaching tour while Tim was in Athens.

The furthest east Brian ever coached before coming to OU was Los Angeles.
