She made her staff work the concession stands, usher stations and other front-line positions multiple times each year to better understand the customer experience. I welcome our AD to do the same. I'm not even asking him to experience the godawful lines and poor service during the first half. He can simply come down from the fourth floor to enjoy a Coke and a hot dog...let's say with 12 minutes remaining in the third quarter. That'll open his eyes.
We finally have Coke, SBH? If I missed that last week, shame on me. Pepsi always outspends Coke in buying business so I assumed they still had the OHIO contract. Please tell me we have Coke?

Coming from a Sports Admin undergrad, both degree programs are involved in gameday operations for pretty much any sport. The grad program is more heavily involved and hold positions with more responsibility.

Neither program is involved in concessions at all. Some jobs that an undergrad would have includes ushers, general security, maybe some ticket window duties, things like that. I believe the graduate program would be involved with the more "behind-the-scenes" operations.
I'd hope that our Sports Ad people would be more involved in the administrative/management functions (more than just being ushers, general security, etc)!

Ushering and security as the prep for a professioal career? Maybe for a month or so only....
All undergrads are required to complete a certain amount of practical hours to complete their degree. These hours can come from a variety of sources depending on what the student is interested in getting into. A lot of students wish to get into facility management and this is just part of starting out. Students have options other than this. I helped the SID crew for Vball and Fball and some field hockey as well.
As a fellow Sports Ad undergrad I can second all of this. The undergrads get lower responsibility positions, mostly all volunteer work and it counts as hours toward their degree. The grad program positions are most likely paid and have more responsibility. There's only so many positions to go around.

I used to work in Dining Services at Shively and they would always ask for volunteers to work at the basketball and football games. I believe they still got paid, but you weren't required to go.

Solution to this would have been using common sense when putting the scoreboard and clock in.

That would have been when dining services had the concessions contract, which was as big an abomination as parking. By the time dining services wrote off all there expenses and internally billed Athletics got nothing for concessions. Current situation is miles better than where Ohio was at 10-15 years ago.

A thought I had...what would it take to create some kind of "express lane" or "premium" concessions option to season ticket holders/donors who don't necessarily want the Tower Experience?

I'd probably throw down an extra $30 a season to skip the lines or get higher quality pretzels. Maybe that undercuts the whole idea behind the benefits of Tower access.

While we're at it, I would LOVE a South exit from the stadium! How nice would it be to exit there, go under the bridge and be at my car in the grass lot without having to deal with the richland intersection?

The answer is VERY NICE!

I second this. I just do not like Pepsi. I'll only drink it if it is given to me if I am guest at someone's home or something so not to be a rude jerk and that's only if I am offered "Coke." I dare not mix good corn from a jar with it!

I'll do the Dew or Dr. Pepper as both are usually offered by Pepsi drink providers.

Also it does make me scratch my head why so many common experiences/services seem to be lost on our game day customer service/experience. I have probably been spoiled going to a lot of pro stadiums and major college venues but I have also been to some single A minor league ball parks and some low end hockey arenas that still offered great choices for food and drink and were clean, up to date, and organized.

I also wonder what would it take to be able to entice a few restaurants to set up shop in Peden/The Convo? I'm sure there is language in our current contract to prevent it currently but what about planning for when that contract expires? Our opponent this week, Tennessee, has several Knoxville based restaurants operating within Neyland-notably Calhoun's BBQ and Petro's (believe it or not it has made quite a niche selling basically walking tacos and has several restaurants around KNX).

I know that is not an apples to apples comparison in terms of stadium size/potential customer base but if we honestly have 15-24K in attendance at a football game that would hopefully catch someone's attention as a chance to make money. I'd love to be able to buy a few slices of Goodfella's Pizza or a few O'Betty's dogs at a game.

The last few times I have purchased food at The Convo or Peden it was gas station quality at best-and I'm talking Speedway-not Sheetz.

Every year I receive a survey regarding the Peden Stadium experience with questions about facilities, services, etc... Every year I take the time to point out where improvements are needed from my perspective as a fan. Many improvements could be made without spending much money. Properly trained and stocked concessions are a matter of proper management and an easy fix. I can't figure out why management doesn't want to maximize their profits by having speedy service (move people through faster, higher volume of sales). At the first home game several people from my row went to pick up drinks (under Peden) but after a while gave up because of the ridiculous lines. Nobody wants to miss half a quarter of the game to pick up a bottle of water; or worse yet, brave the line, wait forever and then find out that whatever item you wanted is either out or they decided not to have it at all for that game (even though it was plainly listed on the concession signage). These kind of issues need addressed but nobody seems to care at all. We just need to face the facts that we are a captive audience once we go in the gates at Peden. As the Dos Equis guy says, "stay thirsty my friends".

I fully agree. I know it's not what this thread is about, but this carries over to basketball, where there's nothing like mother nature to get in the way from game day experience. We have a beauty of a building with nice sized restrooms, adequate access points for concessions, and nice cushy seats. Compared to Peden, it's a luxury car. And STILL there are things that get left undone that could make gamedays a noticeably better experience. Simple things like paint, maximizing the use of the TVs at concession stands, and visual displays in the concourses and inside the arena that would dress the place up and make it feel like a bigger experience. Instead, we see the same blue paint in the bathrooms on a Green & White campus. We see drab grey and white concourses. And we limit the names/jerseys hanging in the rafters to about 6-7 individuals instead of listing off All-MAC candidates, MAC POY, etc.

Obviously I'm a basketball guy more than football, but the exact same logic could be applied in Peden Stadium. It's not that I don't enjoy coming down, and it's not that I don't appreciate the success that we've been able to watch for the better part of the last decade. I do. I just see what the next level could look like, and it doesn't have to be mega-money things like jumbo trons and big Peden renovations. It's taking what you have and making it just a little better. It's kind of like detailing your older car. It looks noticeably better after you've put in the time to wax your paint and polish the chrome.

All of these will take a considerable capital investment for both Peden and the Convo. We've already sank millions into the Convo and there are millions more of needed work. In my opinion the Department is doing an admirable job with the lack of resources they have to work with. And before we do some of this stuff, I'd like to see the Softball Team get a stadium.

I guess all one would have to do is look at the attendance and revenue of all the sports and it would validate his comment. Football and men's basketball is the only sports that make any kind of real money. Translation they are the only two that really matter. I understand you gotta have the other stuff because this is a school. It's really suppose to be about the student athletes.

Chicken wings, every sporting event should have chicken wings and I'm talking the non breaded with bones in them.. Not the sauced up chicken nuggets they call chicken wings. Tacos would be good too.

In wheeling WV the minor league hockey team last year changed their concessions. They brought in restaurants from around the area. They have wings from Quaker steak, subs from some local sub shop. Their concession got a major upgrade over the usual boring stuff.

Every student( or Ozone member I'm not sure) gets the same survey through email. Every year I point out they need a better scoreboard and sound system. What they have now is a joke. Even when they have interesting things up on the scoreboard it doesn't matter because nobody can hear it and it's hard to see. I also pointed out that many more students would come and stay if they sold alcohol in the stadium. I get the hesitation to do this because of how rowdy OU students could get, but without doing this you're always going to lose most of the students at halftime. It's sad too because many students are so uneducated about our football team. Many students think we are a low teir promgram and it drives me crazy. I had someone tell me think past weekend that we were probably ranked around 200, being dead serious. Almost every time I tell someone our record last year they seem surprised. They think we're a lot worse than we are and I think that has direct correlation with our stadium atmosphere. Students compare our atmosphere to OSU or other bugs schools and we don't compare in any way.

Green paint, making existing TVs functional so that they show something related to the game being played, and some simple "posters" of past and current players on the walls in the concourses require significant capital investment?

Anyone thinks the turnouts in Peden are because of a good team needs to think twice. The program starts winning 10 every year and I think you'll see a change in attitude about the football team. It hasn't nearly been that good.
