Although I will not be in town for this week (I am coming back for an event the following week) there's nothing like Homecoming in Athens. Don't know about you guys, but what is the one thing you get pumped up for when you head back? Whether it's going to Cat's Eye for a drink, being in town when the Drumline tears up Court St., the parade, or whatever it is, what is your one thing you are most excited for this time of year?

I've missed two Homecoming weekends since I graduated in 2000. They were both for weddings in my family.

It's a holiday for me. It's tradition. It's getting together with people who will be there every year that can't make it to Athens for other home game weekends. It's watching 110 Alumni both in the parade and at half time. My personal favorite parts of Homecoming weekend have absolutely nothing to do with football.

It's the feel of love & pride in the Alma Mater.

For me it's all about the drumline in the bars, the 110 alumni, Bagel Street Deli on Sunday morning, and just walking on the bricks.

If I'm going to homecoming I'm going all out. Arrive on Friday night and stay out at the bars. Saturday morning wake up early and hit the bars for breakfast to watch the parade. Eat lunch somewhere that's not busy, hopefully it's Bagel Street, Big Mamas or Pita Pit, then go to the game.

These things need to be had at some point during the weekend: a slice of Goodfellas pizza and a Hot Nuts shot from Tonys. Ahhh yeah that's the good stuff.

I regularly see quite a few people during the typical Homecoming Weekend in Athens.

However one particular year when my oldest was in fifth grade it was parade time and I still hadn't seen anyone I knew. Come on, you remember those days when younger kids put restraints on many who otherwise would have shown up!

Well the alumni 110 is marching by and my 10 year old son starts yelling, "There is Mr. Turner (my son's elementary band director)." Well what do you know, someone else in my family knew someone before me!

I have not been to every parade in Ohio so I wonder, for numbers of folks who line the street, just how would OHIO's Homecoming Parade rate with the others?

I enjoyed older parades a little better than the current ones primarily because I liked to see a number of the local and not so local HS Marching bands rev up the sounds as opposed to the 110 to start and then the alumni band at the end and a lot lacking in between when there are no bands to break up the routine.

My wife and I won't be able to come to Athens til November,but that doesn't mean we won't celebrate Homecoming.

We have "kegs and eggs" on Saturday morning,watch the stream of the parade,then watch (fingers crossed) or listen to the game.

Agree I liked the older parades better. Not sure why they have lost all the local HS bands. That made for a much better atmosphere. I also think the floats have gone downhill--no real creativity, no real effort shown.

WAY too much politics. We will miss the parade this year.

I'm from a family full of bucknutz, the stereotypical kind. The kind that wondered about a wedding start time related to Os-Who kickoff time in the fall. So you can imagine the situation, but I don't skip family weddings if I can help it.

It's funny - the older I get, the less I want anything to do with an Athens bar on Homecoming Saturday. I'll take the tailgating instead. Friday afternoon and evening on the other hand are outstanding. (Some of that has to do with the fact that we make fifteen trips to Athens during the fall & winter, I admit.)

We've taken to making breakfast in a tailgate lot the last couple years. Our own version of "kegs & eggs". A good solid relaxing morning before gametime.

I used to love the parade, but now I know better than to attend during an election year. We hit the bars on Friday night, then get to the tailgate lot around 7:30 on Saturday morning. I love parking lot pancakes, eggs and mimosas, then having 6 hours of tailgating before the game. Once I reached the age of 23, Homecoming replaced Halloween for me. Same liver damage, but a slightly more controlled crowd.

(*and I skipped my cousin's wedding because it was the same Saturday as OU Homecoming. I sent $100 and an Atta-Boy! Anyone that schedules a wedding during the fall has to be prepared for no-shows. Marriage has a 50/50 success rate. OU Homecoming has considerably better odds of success.)

This actually sounds better, but I've never had that alternative.

For all those coming to Athens from Columbus either this week or next be aware of the following. Rt. 33 will have one lane in each direction closed from Friday night at 7pm until Monday morning at 5am between Hamilton Rd. and Gender Rd. I know I work on this project and is why I can't attend the next two weeks. It is possible with bad weather it could be postponed as it was last week but it should be planned for.

I love all of the activities related to homecoming. IMO many of the high school bands don't participate because they are in the homestretch of competition season. Local HS bands attend competitions throughout the state in the hopes receiving that "I" rating to qualify for state competitions in November.

There Friday thru Sunday hoping I don't see a repeat of CMU or Ball-Less HC in years past.

Get to the Cat's Eye late Friday = party. Wake up with some coffee and early jog along Hocking. Party and watch game. Nap (I'm older). Back to Cat's Eye = Party. Sleep. Get up and eat. Back to Cinci.

All the way back thinking how I would like to just stay in A-Town.

Despite the 80 minute drive I make to A-Town on most home Saturday's, this is generally how I feel about the drive home most times.

Seems like they have eliminated most of the really good viewing spots. The best vantage points now might be near Chubb or on College Green after the turn is made from College Street onto Union. There is some elevation and some open spaces for kids in those areas.

Worst parade route I've ever seen - reminds me of Animal House and all because a few squeaky wheels on Court Street convinced city council that the parade needed to go by there store. The natural ampitheater in front of Baker was a great viewing area for hundreds. In front of old Baker is not.

Not only the parade route stinks, the whole parade stinks. I've been boycotting it for the better part of a decade. Floats now consist of a coed on the back of pickup truck. There are almost no high school bands. The parade stops way too much, so that those on the reviewing stand can see stand-in-place performances. There is nothing innovative or clever or interesting in the whole parade, save for the alumni band, and I can see them at halftime of the game.

I remember hearing a couple of years ago that the parade organizers had essentially outlawed any sort of constructed float due to safety concerns. Any knowledgeable people able to speak to the truth of that story?

Would certainly be consistent with current nanny-state orientation we are encountering with increasing frequency.
