Talk about taking a major nose dive before the season is even close to starting. The Falcons lost their head coach Dino Babers to Syracuse, their QB Matt Johnson didn't apply for a medical redshirt, their WR Roger Lewis left school early and now their WR Gehrig Dieter is transferring. Plus their RB Travis Greene is done. Those were 5 of the best player in the MAC and they're all gone. And they also hired a head coach with zero college head coaching experience. Something doesn't smell right to me about all of this either, I expect to see more offseason turmoil in the Flatlands. Talk about major, major losses. I'm saying it now, Ohio wins the East next year, guaranteed. BG's stranglehold over the East is now officially over. The Bobcats will be in Detroit next season, you can book it.

A MAC East title for 2016 is perfect timing as Ohio has to replace 2 SR QB's after this year. For the Solich detractors the MAC landscape is becoming favorable for Frank and makes a step down all that less likely. Bowl performances often portend success the following year. Ohio bowl performance against 11-2 App State was fairly solid in a loss while Georgia Southern outscored BG 35-0 in the second half of the GMAC. Bowling Green opens at Ohio State next year and a big blowout there could set the tone for the season.

Are you fellas not giving Akron a thought as the east champ? They took care of business at the Tater Bowl and finished tied with the Bobcats as distant 2nd bests.

Akron? You're kidding, right? You mean the same Zipless team Ohio has beaten 8 straight times and also gets at home in 2016? Ohio owns Akron, and the proof is in the pudding.

Does 'kron have a veteran qb and are they returning a significant portion of their talent?

We barely beat them last year.

Fact is, we are hardly a team that can make assumptions, a team that can figure we can just walk out and have it be ours.

I recall going to Oxford to watch the Bobcats rip the team there only to later go to Kent to watch OHIO in a season ending loss that gave Miami the trip to Detroit. OHIO may beat Akron in '16 but there are other games to be won.

Speaking of streaks, Toledo has a pretty good one going against OHIO and it may be that Akron's schedule against the West is a bit easier than OHIO's but perhaps not.

I've been at all 8 of those victories. The last two by the skin of the teeth--Zips come off a bowl victory with an improving QB. That is why it is simple, win when you get to Detroit because it may be your only chance... the Worm is always turning and the bottom comes to the top on occasion..just look at Kent a few years ago--one hit wonders--maybe Akron this year!

Akron loses quite a few players this year:
WR - 2 starters (Pratt, Davis)
OL - all 5 starters (Williams, Brumbaugh, Bohan, Brown, Osborne)
QB - backup (Pohl)
RB - starter and backup (Hundley, Alexander)

DL - starting DT and NG, plus backup DE (Coe, Grice)
LB - all three starters (Evans, Monroe, Brown)
DB - 3 starters and a backup (Givens, Cheek, Senter + Turner)

ST - Punter and placekicker (Paul, Stein)

So, they lose 8 starters on offense, 8 on defense, and both kickers. It seems to me likely they will have some rebuilding to do. That doesn't mean they can't bring in a lot of transfers and still be OK, but it does reduce the continuity.

I wouldn't quantify this as an implosion. An implosion would be something like starting off 7-0 then losing 4 of the last 5.

Bowling Green is suffering the price of success.

I understand why Bobcat fans may be unfamiliar.

Actually Ohio fans are very familar with the price of success but it just happens to be in basketball. Lose to 2 coaches and recruiting classes, have a down year and go through a rebuild. The good news is in basketball if you make the right hire the rebuild can happen pretty quickly. In football just because of the numbers it takes a little more time and then god forbid you make a bad hire things can really go south. I dont mean to wish bad things on BG but....wait a second, yes I do.

Oh my!!!!! Here we go again. Convincing ourselves that everyone else will be bad enough that we are automatically winning the east next fall. We go from having no QB worthy of being our starter as seniors to "it's in the bag". Can we be any more fickle?
Seems to me that Bg returns a proven QB that can get the job done. Seems to me that losing 2 receivers leaves several more that I saw make play after play still there on their roster. I believe they will be able to replace the Rb, especially if their line can get the job done. I also believe hiring someone who has not been a head coach yet is not the kiss of death. For the fact that he is used to running the same basic offense that Babers ran means there will be little change.
Come on people, do have to do this every year? Let's just go out on our own merits and strength and win the damn thing!

It's been 8 years without a hiccup. Remember Akron saying last year was the year it ended? They talked about how every year the Ohio game ruined their season. How'd that work out for them?

Against the 126th ranked schedule, sure. The Monroe we all know would give no credit for even playing that schedule. Ohio was vs #76.

If you want to look at Akron's schedule fine...

They barely beat Miami and UMAss
We crushed Miami, didn't get to play UMass

They beat Kent, we beat them by more.

They got crushed by two P5 teams they played in OOC
We should have beaten UM (bogus flag)

They only beat one G5 team in OOC (ULL)
We beat Marshall (again) and won @Idaho

We played tougher West teams (NIU, WMU, BSU) than they did (EMU, CMU) and won two. They split.

We played very well in a bowl game vs. an 11-2 team.
Akron barely beat a 6-6 team

The only point in their favor is that they beat Buffalo, and we did not.

I'm taking about their program, not a season. They just lost their head coach and entire coaching staff for the second time in three years, and lost one of their best QB's in school history, their all time leading rusher, and two WR's with eligibility remaining who will both play in the NFL. Lewis and Dieter were the two best WR's in the MAC had they returned. I'd throw WMU's Davis in there as the third (he decided to return for his senior season). To your point about them suffering the price of success, if say Ohio State had just lost all of that, they have capable guys waiting in the wings to step in and fill those gaps. But a good team in the MAC like BG can't overcome those kind of losses at one time. It's going to be crippling to them. This is going to set them way back.

Very 71-esque ;-)

I am excited about this upcoming season. We bring back A LOT of starters from what was a pretty good team. BG losing Gehrig is a pretty big lost. That kid can play.

I think this season is our best opportunity to win the MAC in a very long time. I really hope someone steps up at QB!

I'll believe it when I see it. Not saying BG is immune to slipping with such huge losses, but I'm not ready to de-crown them yet in the East. They've earned a reputation with their style of play on offense and while they've lost their coach (and huge chunk of their offensive firepower)....they did recruit well bringing in a 3-star QB & WR. And one other thing I noticed, they only recruited 15 guys...so that tells me they have a lot of experience on the current roster that has been in the program.

While I'm hopeful this brings them back to the pack and gives Ohio a chance to pass them....I'm hesitant to throw up the tombstone just yet.

Knapke threw for 3100+ yards in 2014 and led them to MAC title game and bowl win while Coppet ran for 825 yards in a back-up role last year. And Ronnie Moore had nearly 1000 yards receiving last year. That's not a bad fall-back to build your offense around.

BG will still be a top team, but most likely not as good as last year. Ohio will be better than last year. That should even things up a lot. The 2016 game will be at Ohio, and that helps, too, since I think that the BG-Ohio game will be for the Championship. Other teams will no doubt try to have something to say about that. Miami and Kent will both improve, but have a long way to go, and I don't see them in the top 2. Buffalo and Akron will be the ones most likely to get into the top 2, along with BG and Ohio.

Akron did pick up a Grad Student RB from OSU, he's had limited carries, but the guy in front of him was decent. He was also a stud on special teams, so they are probably pretty capable as RB heading into the season

Akron doesn't seem to do as much of the conventional recruiting of Freshmen (maybe 10-14 a year), and seems to rely on a lot of JUCOs and transfers. As a result, having a lot of Seniors will be common for them. From the outside, though, it makes it very difficult to predict how good they will be in any given year, since there is so little carryover from year to year. Idaho was another team that does things that way, but Bowden seems to be more successful than Petrino with that strategy.
