Day 1 Columbus area signings. With the new highway and short distance between Athens and Columbus - I just don't see how or why Ohio University doesn't have a connection with the central district athlete. I know Saul is starting to look into Columbus for players, but the football program has not been able to create any sort of connection what so ever.
There have been a few...and I mean a few.

These are guys I found over the last 10 years from Central Ohio that made an impact on the field for Ohio (Heitzman and Hardy were both transfers)

The list of guys that actually appear on the roster over the 10 years is much longer....but I was only listing guys who actually did something other than occupy a roster spot.

It's one thing to recruit Central Ohio to fill out the roster...it's another to find playmakers...and Central Ohio is full of them ... every year. Would be nice to get our hands on a few

This is will be deemed the best class ever if on the field they can go 42-12 over the next four years (that's 10-3 on average), win a couple MACC and a few bowl games.

If not...they will go down just like every other class at Ohio in the last 15 years.

Good...but not great. 7-5, 8-4 material....good enough to lose the Dollar General Bowl and a couple MACC

Kids have different ideas about where they want to go to school. Many will turn down local schools in favor of out of state places they think have more cachet. They may want to get farther away from home for various reasons. Thinking Ohio kids want to go to Ohio schools is just not so. Although it was many years ago, I had offers from Kent State and Cleveland State which were in my backyard. Akron, too, but they were DII at the time. I just wanted to get far enough away from home to be truly on my own and thought those schools were too close.

I think Zac Clark belong on your list. While he was normally the blocking TE, he was definitely a solid contributor. There may be others that belong on your list, too, but I don't have time to research them.

As for current players, Jake Hale is already a contributor. I expect a couple others on that list will be in time, too. Adam Notestine was listed as the backup center this year.

I think on paper this is one of the best classes based off needs. Time will tell as always. But we lose 2 great defensive leaders in Terrell and Casey to graduation on the defensive line and we get quality recruits that have potential. Me personally, I think the defensive recruiting was outstanding this year. Here are my top 5 five for this class that I think we hear a lot about early in their careers here:

1. Marcus Coleman- great size & will recquire double blocks by end of career
2. Juan 'Vonnie' Watkins- amazing hands, can intercept passes and stays home
3. Ayoola Ogun-Semore- will be the heart of our defense in years to come
4. TJ Robinson- will give us a lot of 'great hits' on big blitzes
5. Devante Mitchell- has potential to be a defensive captain in years to come

Statewide
1. Maryland
2. Maryland
3. Georgia
4. Florida
5. Florida

I think the the top 3 will not redshirt. TJ and Devante may not redshirt but will tell in fall camp. All have potential to play. I think Rourke is the only other guy that may play unless injuries pile up.

I agree that I really like the guys you like, though Robinson is my favorite of the group. The recruits that I think are most likely to play are the two JUCO players, Hayes and Rourke. There is no reason to recruit a JUCO, even one with 3 to play 3, unless you expect them to play immediately.

Of all the recruits, I think Rourke has the best chance to start, and that is because there is so little depth at QB. I think they will redshirt Keszei, who I don't believe will report until summer or fall. Meanwhile a battle for the starting job will unfold in Spring between Maxwell and Rourke. Maxwell has the inside track since he knows the playbook, but I think he'll have to improve a lot from last year to keep the job. I'm expecting Rourke to push him hard, and perhaps take the job away.

In my opinion, Harris and Cherry will play, we need wide outs bad, if Brooks bulks up, he will play as well. Coleman could challenge at DT. Tusha and Hayes will play on the OL. I am hoping we will add Antonio Howard at corner and he will play as well.

I can't see any reason not to recruit Ohio players if they're as good as out of state players. In fact, it makes much more sense to me for lots reasons including- in State versus out of state tuition costs to athletics, increased probability of attendance by family and friends, better visibility for other prospective Ohio students in the future to name a few.

When I see a group of 20-30 people with Ouellette jerseys at games, I'm reminded of the importance of "local" i.e. Ohio players.

We have lots of students from Ohio high schools at Ohio, what's the increased chance of a student following and attending a sport if they know a player from their school? Off the chart in my opinion.

The question is if the quality of player that we recruit is the same or better.

It was mentioned during the signing press conference that we have 3 coaches recruiting Florida. I'm guessing that somebody thinks that it's worth it. Based on the quality of player that we seem to be getting from Florida, I wouldn't be surprised. Think Zervos and Hagan this year.

They are usually rated in the bottom half of the MAC, without a doubt. That is mostly because Ohio tends to find some unrated players, and when they land someone unrated, like a Carrie or Brazill, they are presumed to be bad players, and they drop Ohio's average. Some unranked players have never contributed, but others like the two I mentioned, have been very good.

In this year's class there were five players who were unranked, and ergo presumed to be awful. Those are Cox, Rourke, Floyd, Ogun-Semore, and Ross. If you look at the rest of the class, Ohio would be second in the MAC in average rating per player, but if you include those five, and presume they are no good, Ohio's class drops into the bottom half. I personally thing all five are very good.

This is an excellent point, very clearly stated. Frankly, I didn't understand how unranked players could skew such evaluations. Are all JUCOs, like Rourke, unranked? It's a joke.

The * rankings are simply too arbitrary. I'm not to the extreme that doesn't recognize that higher * players are clearly more gifted athletes who more often than not were very talented high school players, but the margin for error is simply too high for the amount of data available.

While I recognize higher * players are, on average, more talented, I also think looking at scholarship offers is also a very meaningful calculation. This is PARTICULARLY the case for non-P5 schools. When a non-P5 school is able to out-recruit the P5, that is really the first place you want to start your evaluation.

Rankings being skewed down because you get a JUCO, who presumably, is MORE likely to contribute early, is a fatal flaw for recruiting services in a pretty high $ market.

The think some people forget is that the recruiting services are operated for a profit. Where does their profit come from? It comes from people who subscribe to their "inside" information. The P5 schools, particularly the top ones, have a lot more people willing to to pay every month for the information, and for access to the "Premium forums" that they operate for top P5 schools.

How many Ohio fans subscribe to these services? Not many, if any. Therefore, making sure that their information on Ohio recruits is complete doesn't happen. With the exception of 247Sports, the services don't make any effort to rate G5 recruits; some players do get rated, but it's because the services believed early in the the recruiting cycle that they would be p5 recruits.

Ohio seems to, in particular, go after players that didn't get a lot of attention early in the cycle (and who therefore are unrated), but who came on strong their Senior year. That, I think, gets them some very good players, but it also assures that the class won't be highly rated.

This is why I don't understand the lack of JUCO rankings... Maybe this has changed in recent years, but from what I remember even P5 JUCO players are left unranked. Doesn't make $ sense to me. Leaves room for competition.
