Florida, Texas and California have tons of high school talent and bigger populations than Ohio. Florida and California also have fewer FBS schools than Ohio. They're just recruiting where the players are and where there's possibly less competition for players. Should not come as a surprise.

Less competition? Every big school in the country camps out in Florida. I'm just baffled as to why the current staff, who I like BTW, hasn't tried to create a pipeline to the Columbus area for 2-star and 3-star recruits that are not being courted by Ohio State.

It is not a problem to get a majority of recruits from Florida, Texas and California.

I understand that. But would you fly to Texas to pick an apple when we have orchards right here in Ohio?

I've seen this a few times from different folks.

Why is that? Just curious, what makes this the best class ever?

They can come from Middle Earth, Melmac, or New Mexico for all I care if they are good players, will work hard in the classroom, and perhaps most of all, represent our university with class and self respect.

The analogy doesn't work at all, because most of us buy our apples from wherever they are cheapest and easiest to procure. Clearly, the Ohio coaching staff has found it easier to get their apples from the states of Florida, California and Texas. Now, you can want us to buy our apples from Ohio for some sort of civic pride or duty, but that's not a very efficient way to get our apples.

(Also, ironically, the best-tasting apple, the Sweetango, isn't grown in the state of Ohio. The University of Minnesota, which owns the marketing rights to the apple, uses cooperative farmers from Michigan and Wisconsin to grow its apples for the midwestern markets)

Day 1 Columbus area signings. With the new highway and short distance between Athens and Columbus - I just don't see how or why Ohio University doesn't have a connection with the central district athlete. I know Saul is starting to look into Columbus for players, but the football program has not been able to create any sort of connection what so ever.

This exact discussion is also happening in the recruiting forum. There, a couple other points came up:
1. This was the year of the temporary rule against off-campus football camps. Ohio's normal outreach to in-state players is through the off-campus camps around the state, and they normally add a lot of commitments from Ohio players in June-July as a result of the camps.
2. It was reportedly a poor year for Ohio recruits. (Next year is expected to be a strong one.) Other schools, such as Ohio State, also recruited less Ohio players than normal. Only Toledo really had a lot of in-state recruits.

This made me chuckle, I had an Alf poster in my room at the College Inn.
