We only sign TWO players from the talent rich state of Ohio?

Your top 6 states in terms of high school football recruiting.

1. Florida
2. Texas
3. California
4. Ohio
5. Georgia
6. Pennsylvania

I don't get it.

Florida, Texas and California have tons of high school talent and bigger populations than Ohio. Florida and California also have fewer FBS schools than Ohio. They're just recruiting where the players are and where there's possibly less competition for players. Should not come as a surprise.

Less competition? Every big school in the country camps out in Florida. I'm just baffled as to why the current staff, who I like BTW, hasn't tried to create a pipeline to the Columbus area for 2-star and 3-star recruits that are not being courted by Ohio State.

The number of recruits from in-state has varied widely over the years:
Looking at just Freshmen, here's how the percentage from Ohio has varied:
2006 - 9 of 15 from Ohio
2007 - 9 of 20 from Ohio
2008 - 5 of 15 from Ohio
2009 - 3 of 17 from Ohio
2010 - 7 of 13 from Ohio
2011 - 11 of 21 from Ohio
2012 - 4 of 14 from Ohio
2013 - 8 of 18 from Ohio
2014 - 13 of 18 from Ohio
2015 - 7 of 16 from Ohio
2016 - 11 of 18 from Ohio
2017 - 2 of 19 from Ohio

I attribute this year's drop to the loss of Coach George at a key point in the recruiting cycle. After he left, the number of recruits for June-July dropped well below the last couple years. Those recruits tend to be from Ohio.

It is not a problem to get a majority of recruits from Florida, Texas and California.

Who do you have in mind that we might've missed? Is there a list of 2- or 3-star football players from Columbus...or anywhere in Ohio...that went to another G5 school or a lower-tier "P" school rather than Ohio?

I understand that. But would you fly to Texas to pick an apple when we have orchards right here in Ohio?

In this analogy, I'd say, there are a lot more people seeking the same kind of two- and three-star apples in Ohio, so they aren't as easy to come by. Most the people looking in Florida, Texas and California are looking for four- and five-star apples, leaving the two- and three-star apples.

Cincinnati didn't recruit Ohio a lot under Tuberville, but now Fickle is targeting Ohio big time. They nabbed two Ohio players we were in on in the last week or so. Plus we lost the Ohio RB to Indiana recently.

I don't think we are ignoring Ohio, there is just a lot of competition so we are looking elsewhere at other football rich regions.

They can come from Middle Earth, Melmac, or New Mexico for all I care if they are good players, will work hard in the classroom, and perhaps most of all, represent our university with class and self respect.

Only time will tell if they are the best class ever. The one thing we do know is that it's the most "known" class. Virtually all of the players in this class had a lot of other offers. Many other classes had mostly players with few or no offers. That didn't mean they were bad players, just that they weren't easy for us, as fans, to celebrate.

The analogy doesn't work at all, because most of us buy our apples from wherever they are cheapest and easiest to procure. Clearly, the Ohio coaching staff has found it easier to get their apples from the states of Florida, California and Texas. Now, you can want us to buy our apples from Ohio for some sort of civic pride or duty, but that's not a very efficient way to get our apples.

(Also, ironically, the best-tasting apple, the Sweetango, isn't grown in the state of Ohio. The University of Minnesota, which owns the marketing rights to the apple, uses cooperative farmers from Michigan and Wisconsin to grow its apples for the midwestern markets)

I think you're right..only time will tell.

I'm not huge into recruiting.... Tons of these guys either never pan out or never even end up on campus. Seems like a lot of wasted energy to me to dive in and get involved. I understand the importance, for sure. But not from a fan's perspective. It's obviously vital for a program to succeed. I have a hard enough time watching college and NFL football...don't need to be sifting thru HS footage. Wake me when they take the field at Peden and I'll pay attention.

I once heard Bob Knight asked about recruiting, etc. He said "Come talk to me in four years and I'll tell how good they are"

Seems right to me.

Day 1 Columbus area signings. With the new highway and short distance between Athens and Columbus - I just don't see how or why Ohio University doesn't have a connection with the central district athlete. I know Saul is starting to look into Columbus for players, but the football program has not been able to create any sort of connection what so ever.

There's always been competition in Ohio. Nothing has changed in regards to that. What hasn't changed either is our lack of recruiting in Ohio. I said it before and will say it again, we suck at recruiting Ohio. I got ripped for mentioning it on another thread but after 12 years you would think Frank, Tim, and Jimmy could actually have a couple hot beds in the state they mine. How is it that Saul and Co. can have so many inroads in Ohio in less than 3 years yet our football program has only two Ohio "scholarship" commits this year? Heck, our basketball program landed as many last year. So yeah, one of the best states for football talent, cant go get em here, nor Western Pa shockingly.

This exact discussion is also happening in the recruiting forum. There, a couple other points came up:
1. This was the year of the temporary rule against off-campus football camps. Ohio's normal outreach to in-state players is through the off-campus camps around the state, and they normally add a lot of commitments from Ohio players in June-July as a result of the camps.
2. It was reportedly a poor year for Ohio recruits. (Next year is expected to be a strong one.) Other schools, such as Ohio State, also recruited less Ohio players than normal. Only Toledo really had a lot of in-state recruits.

It is my opinion that some of the apples in Ohio that we were offering went to Cincinnati. BGSU picked up a good lineman from Westerville North at the last minute, but not sure we offered as he was going to Youngstown.(I think we fell asleep on this one).

Good class, hopefully the QB from Canada is as good as projected. WE NEED HELP
