Morning-after thoughts:
1. Tough to tell too much with an opponent that bad, but it felt good to thrash someone.
2. Maxwell still has a lot of growing to do. The conditions were terrible, so I'll grade his zip and accuracy on a curve....and Papi slipped on the INT....but that was still a terrible decision. The safety was playing deep, and even in perfect conditions with a running receiver I think a pick is likely there.
3. I'm undecided on Rourke. He's frenetic, and he makes things happen, but against a better opponent I don't know that would have worked.
4. It was really good to see AJ run over some people again.
5. Looks like Cam Odom will be the WR we need to step up.
6. DL looked every bit as solid as we could have reasonably hoped, but we'll have to see how they do against Purdue.
7. The legal consumption of beer in Peden was very welcome, and made the downpour to start the game a little easier to bear.
8. Go Bobcats.

I would like to have seen a bit more of Duckworth last night. I don't see why he couldn't have gotten in to start the 4th quarter. Game was well in hand by then and both Maxwell and Rourke had plenty of time on the field. I wanted to see Duckworth attempt at least a pass or two. He seems to have the physical tools (eye test).
According to the lame ESPN announcers, he had several carries and scored the TD. Of course, that was during a 1 minute stretch when I could actually watch the game without crashing. Terrible.

Was it just that Hampton was terrible? Were any questions answered? For me, I had some questions:
1. First and foremost was how good the offensive line will be. They certainly dominated Hampton, so that's a good sign, but we really don't know how good Hampton is.
2.Second, how much of a drop-off will we see in Ohio's defense from last year? Ohio's offense dominated the defense in scrimmages, so there was reason for concern. Ohio's defense totally dominated Hampton's offense. We know little about how good Hampton's offense is, so that doesn't tell us much, but it's certainly better than the alternative.
3. Is Ohio's secondary improved this year? When I looked at the coverage, it looked excellent. Of course, Hampton doesn't have the receivers and speed that Purdue will have next week.

Now, we're all left with the question of, was it just that Hampton was terrible? Or is Ohio good? Or, is is a mix of both? We'll find out more next week when Ohio plays a much better team in an improved Purdue, and Hampton goes back to FCS. Here is what Solich said after the game:
[quote=Solich]At first the yards were tough to come by, but our offense was able to keep itself on the field by making first downs. I think it was a wear-down effect— that's the way it usually is if you are having a very good running game and the plays get a little bit better in the third and fourth quarter.[/OUTER_QUOTE]

As Ohio's offensive line wore down the Hampton defense, the result was that Ohio scored a TD every time they were in the red zone. Before Ohio let off the gas, they scored 8 in the first quarter, 13 in the second, and 26 in the third. A nice easy win early is a lot better way to start the year than last year. So far as I saw, no Ohio players were hurt, so now it's on to a real test next week. Go Bobcats!

Watching the video feed, what little we could see, I believe we learned one very important thing..........that nothing rhymes with Org!

Hampton may be bad but I'd rather be in our position than CMU's. Needing 3OTs to beat a team that was 2-9 last year shows they have a LOT of work to do.

Just an FYI, the replay on WatchESPN plays great and is only about 2.5 hours including commercials and halftime, which you can fast forward through.

Good to see AJ, Brown, and Ross all have good games. Lets hope Odom keeps it up. He and Papi could be an explosive duo out wide. Wish we had Ball out there too, but glad someone stepped up in week 1.

I think it is clear that Maxwell is the better passer between he and Rourke, at least on passes more than 10 yards downfield. The pass to Odom was a thing of beauty. I prefer Maxwell at this point but was pleasantly surprised by Rourke.

O-line played well but that should be expected against Hampton. This week will be the true test.

The entire defense looked good but again, next week is the true test. Hagan already looks the part of an NFL player. He brings toughness, swagger, speed to the back end of the defense.

I agree that Hampton did not provide a high level challenge. But for this season it is a good opener for us to get some very young players a chance to play and get some game experience.
With two young QB's and a handful of first time starters it is a perfect tuneup for what will be a very challenging schedule.
Fall camp was very long and to be able to reward most of the roster with some playing time has to be a morale booster for everyone.
And the most important thing about last nights game is that there was no injuries!
100% agree.

I don't know what to think about this game. I'm glad we won, and didn't see anything to gripe about. Even after a "here we go again" late hit in the first half, that seemed to be it for any costly penalties so hopefully that kind of thing will be rare. It's hard to score 59 points on less than 500 yards of offense. The field position game was so one-sided, we didn't have to open up the offense to score a ton of points. There was nothing wrong with our offense, but there wasn't a wow about anything either. So is the offense still missing any Wow, or was it a typical Solich vs FCS we're not giving our next opponent any good film on what we're doing performance?

I can see how our special teams are going to give us an advantage in most games (bad snap and missed PAT excepted - that is some !@#$ we can't have in a close game).

I think Purdue played just well enough last night to make them overconfident coming into Friday :)

Purdue will NOT be over confident for OHIO.

Newer coach, tough conference--They will be focused on this one if they want to become bowl eligible by the end. The coach will show his Boilermakers the final score of Penn State vs OHIO and the third quarter score of Ohio St vs OHIO and the players will be hopped up to lay a Hampton on OHIO.

Go Bobcats, beat Purdue.

Favorite game moment: Early in the game, Hampton #33 (Carr) lays a good hit on AJ, gets up, jawing at the Ohio bench. 2 series later, AJ gets into the secondary, totally flattens said player on his way to a nice gain. It's nice to have him back.

Agreed, what he brings to the table is totally unappreciated by some. Wasn't long ago that the king of +1 post was saying he only played because he was the starter and not the best. AJ is a difference maker on this team in more ways than just carrying the rock!

Brohm is an outstanding coach. I wish we got Purdue with Hazell at the helm but instead we get an upstart, fiery coach with a fantastic offensive mind and a returning quarterback and running back. I think we can play with them but there would be no shame in a loss if we can keep it close like Tennessee.

So does anyone know what happened to Hampton's much touted Oklahoma linebacker transfer Kapri Doucet? I didn't see him in the game, or on the sideline for that matter...

It was a very quiet blowout. Didn't feel like a blowout. No long scoring plays (although AJ's was called back). A modest 20-pt lead at the half, then a big 3rd quarter. We dominated, but subtly.

When the QB went under center we ran about 80% of the time. We need a better mix there.

Purdue knows they could have won against a ranked opponent and didn't get it done. They will want to bash our heads in.
