I believe, however, that you will be able to continue on 33 and then take the second Stimson exit, turn right, and then rejoin Stimson that way? If not, then the entire point of South Green Drive for athletic event traffic is out the window. Still will be less than ideal, but that left turn onto Stimson won't be a problem, since there will be no traffic coming from the right.
While there will be no traffic coming from the right, traffic coming from the left often causes huge backups for those wanting to turn left toward Sonic and the new roundabout from the second Stimson exit. With the new access to east and south greens, lots of folks coming from the south up 32 now get off there. As squared suggested, I'll give it a dry run tomorrow and report back.
So is that another spot where a roundabout has been added and isn't helping?
If so, consider me shocked!
The roundabout works fine. I drive in that way 5 days a week. There have been a number of projects this year on our roads. I'm assuming this one is just next. They are just finishing the East State St exit and have moved on to this one.
I've used that one only once or twice, so I can't comment much on it specifically. I'm mostly making fun of the fact that in many communities, the roundabouts are over used and unnecessary in some of the spots they're put in. Sometimes it seems like some places are just doing it as a way to keep up with the Joneses so to speak. In Athens, the one at Richland and 682 has been a big improvement. The double roundabout mess in Hilliard...yeah, not so much.
The value of roundabouts has been discussed before on BA.
As an engineer who designs intersection improvements,I'm not a big fan of roundabouts.
They don't work very well, except for relatively low volume intersections.
I prefer modern traffic signals.
They use cameras not only to control red/green phases, but to adjust timing based on the number of cars at the signal.
We even "link" the lights to maintain traffic flow.
Now we can also put sensors in the pavement to provide all kinds of technical data,in addition to traffic volume and speed.
You obviously haven't seen how well the Richland Avenue roundabout works. Lots of traffic and a very nice flow.
Actually,I have used it a number of times, including during what I guess would be considered weekday morning and afternoon "rush" hours in Athens.
Guess you and I have different definitions of "lots of traffic".
I've never seen anything that would be considered, from a design standpoint, even "moderate" traffic volumes.
The only exception would be before/after some football games, when I have seen some significant back-ups.
As far as how well it functions.
Sometimes good,sometimes not.
A lot depends on how familiar people are with roundabouts in general, and this one in particular.
Like I said,we've found that intersections with "smart lights" move traffic more efficiently then roundabouts, even for very low volume roads.
