Starting Monday, August 27th, those coming from the north on 33 will not be able to get off at the Stimson Avenue exit. They will be doing bridge work for a few weeks.

Who’s genius idea was it to do that before football season starts and right when school starts?

I believe, however, that you will be able to continue on 33 and then take the second Stimson exit, turn right, and then rejoin Stimson that way? If not, then the entire point of South Green Drive for athletic event traffic is out the window. Still will be less than ideal, but that left turn onto Stimson won't be a problem, since there will be no traffic coming from the right.

Maybe Alan can do a dry run Monday to see if what Jayboy says is true.

Bobcat football fans and parents of students living on the South Green coming down Rt. 33 would be appreciative.

While there will be no traffic coming from the right, traffic coming from the left often causes huge backups for those wanting to turn left toward Sonic and the new roundabout from the second Stimson exit. With the new access to east and south greens, lots of folks coming from the south up 32 now get off there. As squared suggested, I'll give it a dry run tomorrow and report back.

Ahhh, I assumed that traffic coming from Stimson would forced to turn right there as soon as they crossed over the river, but it makes sense if they don't close down that route to take 33 north, because that would also make the South Green Drive routing out pointless.

So, the single worst way to get to the stadium from 33 is closed.

Also, reminder that the two lots behind Clippinger are closed for eternity as they build some new stuff there, which also forever closes University Terrace between South Green Drive and Race Street.

Crap. Those were strategically wonderful spots to park.

You can take the second exit to Stimson from 33S.

Also, you can leave town on 33N via Stimson as well.

At least, that was today...

If my understanding is correct, the bridge is open one-way during construction?

I wonder if any consideration would be given to flipping the direction of traffic over the bridge during morning. Not sure if that is feasible with construction setup (work on bridge or ramp also?) but assuming that could work it seems like it'd be worth it for heavy traffic events.

We're talking about the State of Ohio and Athens County here. They do everything they can at the wrong time. It almost feels like it's on purpose at times just to see how the public reacts.

So is that another spot where a roundabout has been added and isn't helping?

If so, consider me shocked!

The roundabout works fine. I drive in that way 5 days a week. There have been a number of projects this year on our roads. I'm assuming this one is just next. They are just finishing the East State St exit and have moved on to this one.

They need to put another roundabout right there at the end of Stimson. THAT would be great.

I've used that one only once or twice, so I can't comment much on it specifically. I'm mostly making fun of the fact that in many communities, the roundabouts are over used and unnecessary in some of the spots they're put in. Sometimes it seems like some places are just doing it as a way to keep up with the Joneses so to speak. In Athens, the one at Richland and 682 has been a big improvement. The double roundabout mess in Hilliard...yeah, not so much.

The double roundabout in Hilliard is perhaps the best I've driven in Central Ohio. Use it every time I visit my parents down the street off Hilliard-Rome Road. I try to avoid it during rush hour, but always a smooth transition from Cemetery Rd. to Main St. My children will attest to how much I love avoiding traffic lights or stop signs that roundabouts replace.

So I made the dry run today from my house on the far east side (over by the old Damon's) to the post office on Stimson.

1) Not only can those coming to Athens on 33 not exit onto Stimson but they can't go east on 50 towards Marietta. Concrete barriers reduce that area to one lane through the construction zone. More on that later. Lots of people are getting off at the second Stimson exit - some to make a left toward Sonic and many others making a right to get back on 50 to go east toward Belpre.

2) Going up the entrance ramp by Bob Evans and merging with the traffic on 33 coming from points north is very dangerous. Many people feel that when they are entering a highway via an entrance ramp that those already on the high way should move over and let them in. With the concrete barriers there is no place to move over. I saw three near collisions on my one trip dry run.

3) Depending on when you're coming to town Saturday or any day for that matter and depending on where you're going on campus or in town, you might be better served to get off at Columbus Road and come in that way or at East State Street and turn left. There are now two turn lates on that exit - one left and one right so traffic shouldn't back up too far if you're turning right.

4) And to make matters more interesting, some time this fall, the rest of the East State Street paving will take place from CVS moving west under the bridge to Home Street where they will be putting in another traffic light.

It's been a fun summer of driving in Athens. I guess I could use the new bike lanes on East State Street.

Now the one on West Union is the one I dislike. The other two helped with flow, that did not.

Come on, guys. It's not like they're closing the George Washington Bridge or Lincoln Tunnel. What are we talking - a 1-minute delay?

Good point but with this being band day and with the influx of school buses and the parents that follow, you'll have more out of town cars and inexperienced drivers than normal. My biggest point was the safety issue where the entrance ramp and 33 "collide." One wreck there and you'll have a bridge and tunnel closing.

I've heard Kasich is thinking of closing all highway exit ramps around the university this weekend.

FYI:They're not closing the Lincoln Tunnel.

BUT,they just started reconstruction of the 495 approach to it.

30 month project, with 1 lane closed in each direction.

So far the back-ups haven't been too horrendous. But the first stages of the project are less "intense".

What people are dreading are the back-ups after Labor Day when everyone is back from summer vacation and schools are open.

Broadway is already feeling the pinch from people not wanting to even attempt to get in to the City, even by mass transit.

In fact, N.J. Transit has spent the summer cancelling trains due to a lack of engineers and the installation of Positive Train Control systems.

They estimate that, during morning rush hour(?) the back up to get to the Tunnel, even for express buses, using a dedicated lane, will be over 7 miles, back to Met Life Stadium.

That's 2-3 times what it is now.
Normal rush hour has around 1 hour waits to get to the tunnel with no alternate routes.

Drive that double roundabout between 7:30am, and 8:15am, and then around 4:30pm to 6pm. It's a disaster, with lines of traffic sometimes backed up through both traffic circles. I'm sure it's fine other times of the day, and I'm sure it's better than it used to be, but to me, it's classic Hilliard planning.

Seems like the easy solution here is to come into town via The Plains to Union Street.
