15 pts, 6 reb, in 56-40 win v. Hilliard Bradley in DI regional semifinal.
#2 seed Delaware plays #1 seed and county neighbor Olentangy Orange Saturday in regional final and berth in state final 4. Both teams are 26-1. Orange beat Newark in the other semi.

Burris and Devin Brown of Orange are both on the All-Central District DI first team.

Burris will be playing in the state final 4 next week as Delaware Hayes, #2 seed in central district, wins handedly against top seed Olentangy Orange, 74-56.

Burris scored 17 points to lead the Pacers and Vanderwarker finished with 16. Devin Brown led Orange with 21 points.

Vanderwarker and Brown are juniors with offers from Ohio.

Jesse is having a hell of a senior season. This kid seems to be flying under the radar a bit here on this page. Not saying he's going to make an impact as a freshman, but I like the upside.

I've heard nothing but positive things concerning Burris from several members of the Newark coaching staff. Looking forward to seeing what Burris, Evans x2, Nicol and whoever else Boals brings in add to our returning group of players.

Vanderwarker has lots of upside, hope we can get him.

From what I've seen he appears closer to 6'4 and more of a wing slasher/shooter than a PG to me.

Probably profiles more as a SG here IMO.

Regardless, I wouldn't be shocked in the least if he is the most productive of the Nicol/Evans/Burris trio so far next season.

A buddy of mine who I went to high school and Ohio University with has seen Burris play several times this year. He was unaware that he was an Ohio commit. He randomly brought Burris up in a text chain a few days ago and was surprised to hear he was coming to Athens.

Surprised in what way? He's not good enough? Or too good?

I saw Burris in the two regional games. He was really calm under pressure and let the game come to him. He plays on a very talented team with some dudes who clearly are ball dominant. He just quietly hits the glass, isn't afraid to post up and doesn't get rattled. I know this sounds crazy but he's a little like Steve Esterkamp in that he's a big guard who can shoot but also rebounds (Esterkamp was an underrated rebound guy).

Hayes lost on a last gasp bucket by St. Ig who started several really tall players or at least looked that way on TV.

Burris played well but looks like a good candidate to redshirt his first year. Maybe get in the weight room and develop a D-1 body more. That's not to imply he should be built like Tyler Cochran or any other NFL linebacker type off guard. So don't freak out if Boals redshirts him.

Delaware up 1, St. Iggy has possession for last shot. You wouldn't know it from TV announcers, but I was thinking Delaware had 2, maybe 3, fouls to give. Instead, they allowed a contested layup at around 2-3 seconds left for the game winner.

St. Iggy players whined after every foul and I was waiting for refs to T one of them up. Finally did at around 3:00 mark when Burris was clearly fouled on jumper.

Seems every year or two there is a push from some public schools to separate state tournaments into separate public schools and private schools. Never believed that's a good idea but I'm starting to come around to this way of thinking.

Vanderwarker would be a good get for Boals and staff.

We are recruiting two Iggy players. A tall forward Friery and their point guard Woidke. How did they look? I wanted to go up to this one but the day didn't pan out that way.

Watched the 1st Half...few thoughts...

Love Burris...quick hands, quick leap, gets on ground for ball, plays very smart on O and D, plays under control on O, doesn't force anything. Agree he is a bit thin. Didn't get to see a lot of ball-handling. Perfect MAC "off-guard". Going to be a good one! LOVE his demeanor.

Would love to get Landon as well. More of a true MAC pf vs. our stretch 4's we tend to get. May end up going higher than MAC. Big leaper.

We won't get Friery from St. I'S..he has UC, Dayton, VaTech offers. He is a stretch 4 and very skilled.

I didn't watch St. I's pg...can't comment.

Agree, Warrior. I would put my 2025 recruiting focus on Vanderwarker.

Check out Friery and Woidke on Spectrum News 1 tonight at 8:30 as St. Ignatius plays Centerville for state championship.

Hear a lot of clamoring for this from the lower divisions because a team like Richmond Heights who just won the D4 title will stack a roster full of D1 and D2 talent, play against D1 and D2 schools throughout the year, but are in D4 because of the enrollment numbers and they just blitzkrieg through the state tournament.

I have to think Friery is going hi major.

Not sure what level of college hoops Woidke will end up, but he reminded me of Kevin McHale, which sounds odd as he's a 6-foot guard and McHale is a Hall of Fame big man with some of the best footwork with the ball near the hoop this side of Akeem the Dream. But the way Woidke complained after every foul called on him in the state semis and final brought back memories of McHale never being called for a foul without acting like he had no idea why.

Burris was named to the Div. I all-Ohio first team.

Other notables on first team include Luke Skaljac, Brecksville-Broadview Heights, 6-2, sr., 22.1, a Miami signee; and Kruz McClure, Westerville South, 6-4, jr., 24.3, being recruited by Ohio as part of its 2025 class.

Of note, a former 6th-grade student of mine, Steele Meister, Newark, 6-4, sr., 19.0, made 2nd team.

Burris will end up being a very good player for us. I could see him making a jump like Sheldon his sophomore year and then really taking off his junior and senior years. He has the build, he just needs the muscle. Plays hard and plays within himself. Vanderwarker is solid but he's a big guy. I don't know if I'd target him.
